It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

Branch in Southampton apparently. That employee should be fired
But I'm sure he won't be.

KalimbaMoon · 08/05/2023 11:53

We don’t know the full context, but it’s not a good look for Starbucks. This very tall employee looming over a female customer and clapping their hands aggressively in front of her face while yelling at her. Calling her Karen is the epitome of misogyny. Whatever the woman said to prompt this outburst, the reaction from this person was unprofessional and intimidating. The subsequent assault of the man filming the exchange says it all really. If the way they spoke to the customer was justified, why would this individual object to it being filmed?

He should be arrested for assault and breach of the peace also potentially theft as he refused to refund the female customers money after refusing to provide the goods she paid for.
If I didn't already boycott Starbucks due to their tra policies I certainly would after that

thepetrellies · 08/05/2023 11:55

Saw this on another twitter account with the same video. Seems apt.

Behaving like a man. And a ridiculous man at that. 'You are trespassing, Karen' — buying coffee in a shop.

I doubt that Starbucks GAF about women, especially a woman who has had the temerity to age. However the employee appears to assault a man - the one filming - so there is some hope there will be consequences.

ControversialOpening · 08/05/2023 11:59

Oh I wish I’d been there.

I especially wish I was the person he assaulted.

TrashyPanda · 08/05/2023 12:01

That is shocking

the employee has huge anger issues

rainraingoawaay · 08/05/2023 12:02

Absolutely horrendous! What a horrible person - regardless of what was said before, intimidation and aggression (and potential assault!) is never an appropriate response.

Yes, I saw this too and thought it was apt. It seems that TRAs get a free pass a lot of the time, as if they’re more “special” than the rest of us and can get away with so much more. People need to realise there is good and bad in every community. Not all trans people are nice. Some are horrible people. Ditto for any other group.

This painting of trans people as all being wonderful, untouchable, stunning and brave just makes no sense. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen Pink News write a story that makes a trans person look anything less than marvellous.

They need to wake up. Trans violence is violence, there’s no sugar-coating that.

Gobbolinothekitchencat · 08/05/2023 12:12

Outstanding customer service, really diffusing the situation, unless there is a pile of destruction off camera caused by the customer we can’t see. Although clapping hands in front of someone is never sensible and certainly not recommended if person is a ‘danger’.

Prefer Costa if want an expensive coffee.

OldGardinia · 08/05/2023 12:14

If he really thought he was the victim he would have been glad to have someone filming it.

And what does Starbucks have to say on this matter ? Every woman should boycott the brand until this employee is sacked.

Pixiedust1234 · 08/05/2023 12:20

So he called her Karen, clapped in her face and assaulted a bystander/witness, and refused a refund despite not giving her what she paid for (theft).

Yep. Just another entitled male.

321user123 · 08/05/2023 12:22

Honestly…
I really doubt she said anything crazy as the other Starbucks employee would also be involved.
other customers “may appear” outraged too (not a given though) if she said something crazy.

Given the transphobic comment of the guy… I think he “identifies” as a woman or gender less or whatever and she rightfully referred to him as a he. Just my point of view though..

@landOFconfusion

Nooooo, if it wasn't your first hand story I wouldn't believe someone actually said that. It's made me feel quite sick.

That is really appalling and no one could say otherwise. But it’s very rare.

I spent years working in customer service and of course had my share of difficult and unpleasant customers. But none would have justified the behaviour we see here. It’s aggressive and demeaning.

I had an older nurse tell me when the subject of WWII came up: "It got rid of a few, though." I was too surprised by what she'd said at the time to say much. This was in a work setting.

I'd be surprised if this woman said anything like that though. More likely she just called him a man and if calling someone by their sex is what counts as transphobic then honestly the correct response to him calling her that would just be: "Yes."

We see aggression from the male. We see no bad behaviour from the female, who defends herself firmly but politely, with no swearing or aggression. So why the derail to suggest that it may be the woman's fault?

I work in A&E so I see plenty of bad behaviour from both sexes. That is irrelevant to this specific situation, where the evidence shows the woman acting perfectly reasonably.

Funny how women are always responsible for male violence...

You also victim blamed Fred Sargeant for being badly assaulted while peacefully protesting at a Pride event, one he was instrumental in laying the foundations to happen.

No person should be saying horrific things as you report the woman saying. However, your easy use of ‘German Frau’ was also denigrating and misogynistic.

If this person was calling out a truly hateful act, surely they would have called the police. I have worked in customer service and hospitality roles on and off throughout my life and no customer is deserving of this treatment. If people have been told by their community that this is appropriate for any reason, the community needs to re-evaluate.

Starbucks, 1 Town Quay, Southampton, SO14 2AQ

This incident is doing wonders for their reviews!

EarthSight · 08/05/2023 12:36

This coffee shop staff member wanted to act without being accountable. I bet you they'd been fantasising of that moment they finally get to clap in a middle-age woman's face and call her Karen. Didn't expect to be filmed doing it though....that clearly wasn't allowed.

Thingybob · 08/05/2023 12:37

Does he say "You are calling me a man" just after she says "Don't ever came me transphobic, ever"

Several tweets say that this person has been "let go" by Starbucks
