Debate relating to the definition of “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 will be in Westminster Hall on 12 June 2023 4:30pm

Just posting this as on a thread elsewhere I made some disparaging remarks that the debate will be shuffled off to some small committee room.

But they must think that more than a few MPs are wanting to take part as I have just seen it will be in Westminster Hall.

Will be interesting to see which MPs are willing to state views about the reality of biological sex in public!

Event will be broadcast live.

Hi iccky - I remember you from Allison's excellent thread.

I read that this is just a debate but no decisions will be made? Or am I wrong.

Well I think whichever thread we are on we aren't going to get very far.

Maybe later on today we could have a single thread about next steps as I cant see anything positive coming out of this.

I think it is just a debate.

ickky · 12/06/2023 17:00

They seem to be shuffling back in now.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 17:00

They are back. Good stuff.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 17:01

Good turnout. Hoping Mhairi Black has got something better to do today, she was a right pain the last one of these debates.

IwantToRetire · 12/06/2023 17:01

I read that this is just a debate but no decisions will be made?

The debates are organised by the Petitions Committe who do this once a petition gains more than 100,000 signatures.

So anything said is more an opporunity for MPs to express what they feel and I suppose to give the Government the opportunity to see if there is enough agreement on an issue to then take it to the House of Commons.

But with the debate being set up to discuss 2 opposing views (ie there could have been a debate on each petition) it is nearly inevitable that there will not be a conclusion, or not in the numbers to make the Government think we need to act on this.

I see Jess Philips. Jo Cherry was there earlier, and Miriam Cates.

IwantToRetire · 12/06/2023 17:05

Interesting Tribual Tweets have just posted a link of MPs who are scheduled to speak and it is quite a long list.

So my saying the turnout is small (about 50) may be made up for by actual interest.

Rosie Duffield and Joanna Cherry.

Hello I'm from the other thread. Re possible outcomes:

If the debate finishes before its scheduled end time, the Chair puts the question and asks MPs to decide on the motion. The motion is almost always agreed. There can’t be a vote in Westminster Hall, so if MPs shout “No” when the Chair puts the question, the Chair reports the fact to the House and the question is undecided. It’s possible for the question subsequently to be put to the House for decision without further debate (in the past the Backbench Business Committee has found time for this), but it doesn’t automatically follow that this will happen.

chilling19 · 12/06/2023 17:07

Hardly a sledgehammer

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 17:07

Debate will run to 7.55pm, according to the Chair.

thanks, that's very helpful. Sorry to be dim, but what does it mean to be 'put to the House'?

It would be useful if they put up the names of who is speaking each time.

The woman currently talking is sadly lacking in public speaking skills don;t you think? Which seems weird. So stilted.

Boiledbeetle · 12/06/2023 17:12

this is sending me to sleep

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 17:13

It's Tonia Antoniazzi.

She is awful

She's an MP not a childrens entertainer.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/06/2023 17:14

She's actually often very good but seemed a bit muddled today - names are now going up on the sidebar.
