Just posting this as on a thread elsewhere I made some disparaging remarks that the debate will be shuffled off to some small committee room.

But they must think that more than a few MPs are wanting to take part as I have just seen it will be in Westminster Hall.

Will be interesting to see which MPs are willing to state views about the reality of biological sex in public!

Event will be broadcast live.

There’s another thread with men and non men as the two sexes

It’s pretty obvious from that debate which MPs will get us to that dystopian hellish Atwood universe pdq

Someone who has given birth unsure about what sex she is

criminy!

She reminds me of Baldrick when attempting to be taught by Blackadder.

Madcats · 12/06/2023 20:12

I am a big chunk behind the debate but, decades ago, went to a Uni with a hefty Med school and knew a lot of medics. I was puzzled by the extraordinary number of intersex people in the UK (as it was a 1st year topic amongst us):

I don't really know what outcome I expected from this. I think I naively hoped, in light of recent wins, that maybe common sense and biology would immediately prevail and that everything would be sorted after this one debate.

@WarriorN
"I felt Kirsty Blackman was proper telt".

Please tell me more.

I'm not watching but KB is my MP, I stopped voting SNP over this issue and KB's TWAW stance in particular.

Some of the things I've seen her proclaiming completely ignore the key points some MPs raised around the necessity for single sex spaces. Jess Philips especially. Give KB started a medical degree she didn't finish, and has a female child, I feel all her spouting is very disingenuous. Her first blog post on the matter was particularly full of sexist BS. She repeatedly tried to speak earlier on too.

I haven't finished the debate to know if she managed to.

SabrinaThwaite · 12/06/2023 20:19

Madcats · 12/06/2023 20:15

So that didn't work:

I think that was the point that one of the interruptions made - that chromosomal conditions like Klinefelters are not DSDs.

ResisterRex · 12/06/2023 20:21

Hansard being added to here:

hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2023-06-12/debates/F74BD8CC-4807-46F4-AA51-5402B7CFE8F9/LegislativeDefinitionOfSex

It'll be useful for the future, and serves as a historic record of which MPs were capable of turning their minds to the issue, and which MPs believe they live on Twitter.

The numbers are also artificially increased by TRA's claiming that PCOS (a female endocrine condition affecting 1 in 5 women in the UK) is an 'intersex' condition.

It is not.

As an aside, I'm sure I've read somewhere that Fausto later backtracked on the 'as common as redheadedness' claim but it continues to be used as an argument.

Also Hypospadias

Hypospadias is a common variation in fetal development of the penis in which the urethra does not open from its usual location in the head of the penis. It is the second-most common birth abnormality of the male reproductive system, affecting about one of every 250 males at birth.

Slothtoes · 12/06/2023 20:35

There’s ludicrously sexist and homophobic MPs on all party political sides and women-supporting rational MP on all sides.
Problem is we need a critical mass of supportive MPs. We can’t seem to get that even in the Tory government just yet.

Today was great (Thank you Sex Matters, Fair Play for Women and to all the women’s groups who briefed the MPs- the well informed ones shone out!) and it will be on the record. That is a win. The other gains are an end of #nodebate in Parliament and more MPs breaking ranks and supporting women’s rights, on the record.

However the government response was obviously very disappointing. These issues have been raised with them for years and years. EHRC says we need to look at this- they are the governments own expert advisory body on the Equality Act. What more would they need to act?! This government with its big Parliamentary majority (of 77 or whatever if we count recent resignations), could just make this change to the EqA, which has loads of evidence behind it already. They just don’t want to.

We will just have to keep going putting pressure on the Tories and also start again, with new electoral candidates in all parties- and demand that they ‘respect my sex if you want my X’, basically. This means it will be years after GE 2024 that the law is changed, if ever, and I think only then if we can get this issue on party manifestos now. I don’t know if they’ve already been completed but they will be being worked on. We need to press for EqA reform and GRA review before repeal.
We’ve still got a very long way to go and I don’t think this government is going to give anything at all to women. But it was a good debate today with some good arguments made.

IwantToRetire · 12/06/2023 20:35

Thanks for the Hansard link.

Have only just twigged that the virtue signaller was Layla Moran.

I'm surprised she didn't have tears in her eyes and was dabbing at them with a damp tissue.

I’m surprised at the all sides take. The conservatives were clearly more biology matters

Labour and SNP more on the side of gender ideology

The debate showed that pretty clearly

FriendofJoanne · 12/06/2023 20:37

I had to go out a couple of times so I'm still catching up with the debate and the thread but here we go again BINGO - no one can define what biological sex is. Kirsty Blackman is spouting UTTER BOLLOCKS. Oh it's all so complicated, no one can possibly define it. KIRSTY YOU WOULDN'T BE HERE IF SEX WASN'T BINARY! I'LL MAKE IT SIMPLE FOR YOU THE MALE SEX MAKE THE SMALL GAMETES, THE FEMALE SEX MAKE THE LARGE GAMETES. IT'S NOT BLOODY DIFFICULT!
