Austin Killips won the Tour of the Gila women's race www.cyclingnews.com/races/tour-of-the-gila-2023/stage-5-women/results/
Just outrageous. Any tweet by the organisers mentioning Killips has restricted comments (but of course many quote tweets)
It's getting more and more ridiculous:

  • the rider retained their original male first name, Austin.
  • they rode for the Amy D Foundation, set up to encourage and support young women through cycling, inspiring the celebration of healthy challenge and empowering the confident pursuit of lofty dreams.
  • this is the first year the women's prize money is the same as the men's.
You couldn't make it up. When will the most sports-loving country in the world protect and give a shit about women in sport?

It was the first year that the women's prize equalled the man's prize for this race. It's a UCI race, isn't it? What are the rules for women's racing at the moment with this organisation? Just self ID?

MarinaRhinella · 01/05/2023 00:40

Cycling seems to be the worst of all sports for this. The women will have to just all pull out and make their own events.

Yes, and the second word should be in scare quotes too...

Wishitsnows · 01/05/2023 00:47

Total cheat. Disgusting.

AnythingToSay · 01/05/2023 00:52

Grifter.

OneMorePlant · 01/05/2023 01:11

Disgusting. I hope second place can file a complaint and sue or something. It is utterly vile.

Surely you are not congratulating a male cheat.

LuckyPeonies · 01/05/2023 02:09

This is so unfair Biological women should simply refuse to compete against trans men, that would put a stop to this delusion in a jiffy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/05/2023 02:15

Yup. Sounds about right.

SinnerBoy · 01/05/2023 02:27

What an absolute travesty from a shameless cheat.

In UK news, the Government has now issued guidelines, banning boys from competing as girls, in all competitive sports. They have stated that this is to ensure fair competition for girls.

What with rugby, swimming and athletics now acting rationally, let's hope that this is the beginning of the end of male cheating in women's sports.

MrsJamin · 01/05/2023 06:00

Look at the reaction from sports director Julie when asked about the win twitter.com/RebeccaReza/status/1652782286604238848?t=ri6x2-KIJVXsuQBwb2TSwA&s=19
Yes this is the same Killips that pushed a woman with his bike and got away with it.
Killips is not the only one, there's a long list here twitter.com/i_heart__bikes/status/1645203016977375233 (read all of the replies) - cycling has a BIG problem especially in the USA.
And no, the answer is not the women refusing to compete 🙄, the sporting bodies just need to hoik up their big girl pants and write some fair rules so the mediocre males can sod off and leave the women alone.

To clarify, that interview video link is with Julie Kuliecza who's the director for Killips team Amy D Foundation rather than the whole race.

It's a disgrace. Women should refuse to race with men. The world has gone mad.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 01/05/2023 06:41

Bullying women out of sports, physically and mentally.

I wonder what will happen with UK cycling. If that goes the same way as swimming, rugby and athletics it's going to leave stories like this looking very odd from a UK public perspective.

At the moment, it feels very early on in the public conscience here in the UK about fairness in sport. I think many people are too busy with their lives to even contemplate it and also, each sport is very segrated from the rest. It's not automatic that thoughts about rugby, swimming or athletics will catch the eye of someone in cycling.... The biggest turning point would be football. I hope Gary Lineker bumps in to Sharron Davies at some point and has a natter about it all 🤞🤞🤞

It feels like we're very much on the path to a public shift in conscience on this one. If enough countries can go past that tipping point, they'll bring others along with them.

SunnyEgg · 01/05/2023 08:18

Unbelievable what a cheat

That prize belongs to a woman

Cycling seems to be the worst of all sports for this. The women will have to just all pull out and make their own events.

They can’t. If they do that they will be banned from all events and cycling for teams anywhere .

Every sport has ruling bodies which control it and which are linked to international sports organisations. These forbid participation in unauthorised and unaffiliated events

Where will they get the money to fund their own events without sponsors? How can they run an event without insurance ?

This is all pie in the sky thinking that seeks to make it the problem of women athletes. It’s not - it’s the SPORTS problem.
