London marathon accepts trans women as women

Runner Glenique Frank has just appeared on the BBC footage, clearly male, and has registered as a woman. Sure, he isn't getting a medal any time soon but how is this OK? And don't even get me started about the stupidity of a non binary category - sure fire way for a mediocre male to get a medal! Utterly pathetic.

yes, London marathon need to ammend their results table

megletthesecond · 27/04/2023 07:18

Will Gleniques amazing surgery change her muscles, cardio ability and pelvis? No it won't. They'll still be cheating a woman out of a place.

Lisbeth50 · 27/04/2023 07:59

she thought it would be fun to do a race as a woman.

Fun? Being a woman is not some frivolous choice.

I paraphrased. She identifies as a woman and so she wanted to do a race as the gender with which she identifies as she usually doesn't get that opportunity

If trans people want the opportunity to do races as the gender with which they identify then they need to set up gender affirming sporting events.

Gender, which isn't even objectively real, has got fuck all to do with mainstream sporting events, which are organised according to biological sex for completely obvious reasons.

Glenique may feel an affinity with the female runners, but that feeling is one way. Most of the female runners don't identify as being the same as Glenique.

100% this! I would go so far as none of the female runners identify as being the same. Some may tell themselves they do, because social pressure means they think they must, but they can't overcome those millions of years of evolution which means they see Glenique as male. And the extraordinary male entitlement is pretty hard to ignore. As is the performance of male-imaged womanhood, of a 'woman' athlete in their mid 50s attributing their race to girl power. Never head a menopausal runner say this. Never.

MrsJamin · 27/04/2023 16:22

Some people thought it'd be fun to run as a fridge. Or a rhino. They were at least genuinely "trying to spread joy and happiness", and succeeding, without trampling on others' endeavours.

Good grief. What idiocy.

I don't think there is actually an apology. He says that he chose female on the registration online because he will be female in the future?!?
He also blamed the registration form as it allowed him to choose female and the organisers didn't verify it so it's their fault.

Everyone who runs gets the same participation medal so it makes no sense to give the medal back. The medal doesn't say anything about your placing or gender or age.

There were countless articles reporting an apology. Not sure if you are denying the authenticity of the press or why you are saying there was no apology but the press reported it. For example:

You're right, I apologise, he is quoted as apologising. My comments were based on the interview where he blamed the form allowing him rather than him taking responsibility for doing something wrong.

He didn't do anything wrong officially. The form did allow for self ID this year, any man could have registered to run in the female category (and maybe more did, who knows?). I think they have changed that for next year as all other major races require an ID to register and you have to register for the gender and age group on your ID.

seXX · 28/04/2023 11:06

Officially, he gave false information on the form and the rules did not allow for self ID. Mara Yamauchi explains it clearly here:

MargotBamborough · 28/04/2023 11:08

But how are race organisers supposed to verify someone's sex if trans people are allowed to change the sex marker on their ID documents?

Whatsthefrequencykenny · 28/04/2023 11:23

MargotBamborough · 28/04/2023 11:08

But how are race organisers supposed to verify someone's sex if trans people are allowed to change the sex marker on their ID documents?

At certain levels of competition there are doping measures in place and testosterone levels. However at the non elite level that isn't practical. If someone legally changes their ID and a legal ID is the entry requirement then they can legally enter. The race organizers will only care about sex as far as the entry requirements have sex specifications.

MargotBamborough · 28/04/2023 11:34

Well then they may as well get rid of men's and women's categories altogether, since they are now apparently completely meaningless and men can compete as women.

MargotBamborough · 28/04/2023 15:23

Interesting discussion between Piers Morgan, Mara Yamauchi, Zuby and Paula Rhone-Adrien on this issue.

If I'd had to drink a shot every time Paula made me groan with secondary embarrassment I'd be very drunk right now.

Zuby is great.
