London marathon accepts trans women as women

Runner Glenique Frank has just appeared on the BBC footage, clearly male, and has registered as a woman. Sure, he isn't getting a medal any time soon but how is this OK? And don't even get me started about the stupidity of a non binary category - sure fire way for a mediocre male to get a medal! Utterly pathetic.

What’s to stop me identifying as a 70 year old to gain a ranking advantage? Surely if biological sex is irrelevant then why not biological age?

So fed up with this sexist nonsense in sport.

Ah but the difference is that 70 year old runners, as a group, includes men who would be disadvantaged by you identifying into their category. So rest assured this won't happen.

poppysockies · 23/04/2023 18:06

Yes it's not ok

MrsJamin · 23/04/2023 18:27

You can watch the segment from the BBC here twitter.com/ripx4nutmeg/status/1650133733796634625?t=LUzvxeQolV87uatncXDewQ&s=19 - thanks BBC for highlighting that a man shouldn't be running in the women's category. He ran Tokyo with the identifier for gender/sex as women/women under the name Glen Frank! CHEAT.

Two of my sons run marathons, have done for years. Most recently, Manchester; which had 28 ,000 runners.

Numbers like that have little interest in running faster than any one else; or who else is running. All they care about is their own time compared to their own time in previous marathons.

Club runners very often care, even if they aren't in the top 10 elite.

Lisbeth50 · 23/04/2023 18:46

It's also the "girl" thing again. Since when has someone in their 50s been a girl? I don't think any middle aged women would go on about "girl power".

Riapia · 23/04/2023 19:23

What about someone dressed as a dinosaur. Should they be allowed to run as a non-binary dinosaur.

MissPollysFitDolly · 23/04/2023 19:51

I'm finding it so depressing that the London Marathon organisers would allow this. All those women pushed down a place in ranking, it would really take the shine off the event if it were me.

MrsJamin · 23/04/2023 20:01

Do you think they know, though? Don't you just fill out a form online?

Why can’t the “non-binary” race be a “gender diverse” category. That way all the women taking testosterone and the mediocre men with special identities can run in a separate category.

clpsmum · 23/04/2023 14:20

Why does it matter ffs how does it affect you, are you competing?

Placing males in women’s prisons because they say they are women doesn’t affect me as I’m no in a prison.
There is significant prize money to be won in the London Marathon. The winner of each sex category will receive over £44k. But the top 10 in each sex category also receive prize money, with bonuses for men who run in under 2.02.00 hours, whilst for the females its 2.17.30 hours. This year, 20 males ran faster than the fastest female. If half of those males decided to identify as female, then only males would have won any prize money. I’m sure even you can see how unfair that would be.

I don't care about a non-binary category as, to me, it's meaningless.

isn't non binary literally neither one thing or the other?

MrsJamin · 23/04/2023 20:49

Glen ran in the male category less than six months ago, in New York City.

I’m so fed up of all of this. Why are we letting this happen? To ‘be kind’? No, because women are socially conditioned not to stick our heads above the parapet and speak up.

gogohmm · 23/04/2023 20:58

Unless they are elite runners who are getting a space based on times in previous races, why does it matter? You run for yourself, there's no need for them to even ask for sec or gender for funrunners

gogohmm · 23/04/2023 21:01

Most people running are looking at the personal best not where they finished once you get past about 3.5 hours, (my friend is a club runner and ran 2 hrs 49 last time he ran london)

Is this a justification for men in the women's race?

A non-runner betrays their lack of knowledge in a meagre two sentences.

There's more grades than 'fun runner' and 'Paula Radcliffe'. To club runners, accurate stats and fair competition matter.

it matters hugely because you compare yourself to others in your category, no women want to have men in that mix, messing up all the placings and stats for them

Do you think they know, though? Don't you just fill out a form online?

Pretty sure you just fill in a forn to enter the ballot for a place.

Do the organisers have any way of knowing what an entrant's biological sex is, as opposed to what is ticked on the form?

If not, the results for the mass race are meaningless.

Expected finish time just less than 4 hours, so pretty good for a man and very good for a woman- I don't know how old he was but old enough, that'd be good enough for a woman to qualify for Boston Marathon. These things matter, even for non-elites!

I hope the Boston marathon organisers don’t put up with this nonsense!

MrsJamin · 23/04/2023 21:09

Glen's time will have been compared to women going through the menopause. The difference in marathon running times between men and women are even higher the older you are. I'm just incensed by the audacity of the man.

OP posts:
MrsJamin · 23/04/2023 21:13

He didn't qualify for a woman's space in Boston, thankfully. He'd have needed 3:55 for his age group. He could always opt to be trans-age and identify as a 65 year old woman to qualify - surely that's OK, right?

Glenique?

Obviously likes the original name, which was presumably Glen, and has feminised it. Seems pretty harmless in the grander scale of things. Glenda is not the prettiest name around, I wouldn’t change my name to that given the choice. Would you prefer Glenrietta? Glendoline? Glenivieve?

Honestly, taking the piss out of the name is just a bit catty, and off-topic.

Archie671 · 23/04/2023 21:23

Do we know if London Marathon are letting trans women qualify for Good For Age places based on women’s qualifying times? There are only 3000 female Good For Age places which are allocated fastest first (and 3000 male Good For Age places). If trans women are accepted based on female qualifying times this would put biological females at a significant disadvantage when trying to qualify (as obviously someone biologically male has many physiological advantages when it comes to running).

As a female GFA runner this would be a significant issue for me. My husband regularly jokes he could easily qualify if he only had to run the women’s times. It’s scary to think he could identify as a woman for the day and qualify taking a space from a woman.
