I think the other side of this is that there is more reporting of it now too.

Media have seen the engagement they get from such reporting and will have the analytics that drive their story focus - for example rise in subscriptions and traffic for papers like The Times or magazines like The Spectator when they began prioritising column inches in this area and brought on-board new writers, often moving from competing papers.

These stories are now being told, whereas before I suspect they were suppressed or ignored.
