Suella Braverman vows to stamp out grooming gangs behind organised child sex abuse

IwantToRetire · 03/04/2023 00:30

The Home Secretary, writing in The Mail on Sunday, pledges to 'track down and punish the grooming gangs with the same sense of mission and determination' used to pursue the murderers of Stephen Lawrence, the black British teenager who was killed in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in South London in 1993.

Ms Braverman, who was born in Harrow, in North-West London, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father, writes: 'The time has come to make right one of the greatest injustices seen in Britain in modern times. The systematic rape, exploitation and abuse of young girls by organised gangs of older men – and the disgraceful failure of the authorities to act despite ample evidence – is a stain on our country.'

A Buddhist, Ms Braverman describes the 'perpetrators' as 'groups of men, almost all British-Pakistani, who hold cultural attitudes completely incompatible with British values'.

I am not sure if this is just the DM take on what she said, or if it accurately reflects what she said.

If she did say this and not talk about how men of all cultures, given the opportunity, have and will exploit young women, then she is letting down all the women who are exploited.

So not condemning taking protections away from those who are traffiked then.

You talk about " condemning" as if you are sat on the opposition benches.

I don't think the solutions are easy or as clean cut as you would like to believe. The fact is that modern slavery laws are being used and manipulated by people traffickers and gangs to their own ends. You have to target the gangs and the methods they use to subvert the law if you really want to get a grip of the problem. You also have to target the channels they use to get here.

I'm not suggesting, by any stretch, that the government has got a grip of the situation - but I don't see your " be kind" open border policy as the solution either.

I defy some people on this thread to listen to Samantha Smith talk and then continue to tie themselves in knots in an attempt to score political points.

Give your heads a wobble.

Yet Suella Braverman thought it fit to use these victim for personal gain and political point scoring. She is disgusting.Angry

I agree with you on this. I was reading about drugs trafficking but applies to people too. Any loophole that can be exploited will be.

"Mafias are currently making better use of the advantages guaranteed by the freedom of movement in the European Union than private citizens manage to do. They exploit "loopholes" to go commit crimes where they know that they cannot be prosecuted. "

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2023 19:33

And we are outside FOM obvs but any loophole will be exploited by traffickers here too for same reasons.

Did you listen to it?

EndlessTea · 04/04/2023 19:38

Did you listen to it?

Yes i did.

Terrible isn't?

Abuse going back to the 70s!!! FFS what on earth have Govts Police etc been doing? there was no PC/woke/racial sensitivities back in the 70s, 80s and 90s to blame.

Plus what did the govt do after the Telford report? about the same as the Rochdale one.

I sincerely hope this consultation leads to action.

The grooming gangs got away with it for so long for two reasons racism and classism. Fear of being accused of being racist meant they police and social services
Basically ignoring the women and girls affected because they were working class, often in care and otherwise vulnerable. Viewed basically as scum

Absolutely this. I am very shocked by some of the posters on this thread avoiding the obvious, depressing facts of what is happening. Grim.

Avoiding the obvious is all over this thread and it is deeply depressing. It explains the police and social workers' actions in respect of the girls used by the grooming gangs.

Whaeanui · 03/04/2023 09:50

Yes I do and I don’t know why we would assume otherwise?

I agree. There is no reason she can be assumed not to care.

So funnily enough a story in our local rag today. Wonder if it will get picked up by the DM...

Not one of asian descent.....

Yes it's already been said that in a predominantly white country the majority of perpetrators will be white. And these ones have been held to account. Good.

Let's hope that the same happens for the girls who are the victims of grooming gangs in places such as Rotherham.

Bolton is very different to Rotherham - which is up north.

Bolton is, of course, in Greater Manchester and Rotherham is in South Yorkshire.

Jonei · 05/04/2023 11:53

Lazarusshazarus it has been picked up by the DM 👍

AdamRyan · 05/04/2023 11:57

I also read this today
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65181896

Police taking up to 18 months to arrest child abuse suspects, and failing to follow up concerns.

Poor officer training, ineffective database identified as causes

I hope Braverman puts the same impetus and determination behind this

Jonei · 05/04/2023 12:10

18 months is terrible. 40 years is beyond terrible. Thus better analysis of individual groups / areas / structures /causes are required rather than diluting the problem into one mass so that no child achieves justice for the crimes against them.

jgw1 · 05/04/2023 12:49

NotHavingIt · 05/04/2023 10:07

Quite different.

BewareTheLibrarians · 05/04/2023 13:51

If they’re determined to tackle the misogynistic attitudes of certain groups of perpetrators, wouldn’t it also be great if they could tackle the misogynistic attitudes of some of the police, whose inaction led to girls facing horrific situations. The screenshot here is from the 2015 Casey report, the linked tweet contains more. There are also reports of collusion between the police and grooming gangs themselves.

Focusing on one without focusing on the other will fix nothing, and I’d be interested to hear what plans Braverman has to tackle this particular aspect.

Quite different from what? They are both in the North. I'm not sure of your point?

Where are you based btw?

EndlessTea · 05/04/2023 14:57

I don’t think it supports the hypothesis that the police are equally as reticent and lax about bringing white grooming gangs to justice as they are about the religiously/racially aggravated Pakistani Muslim ones, to show us this white gang being brought to justice.

Anyway, it looks awful. I can’t understand how these groups of men find each other to be so evil together. I imagine that once their case is in court, the details are known and the verdict is reached, then the national papers will take an interest.

Jonei · 05/04/2023 15:08

jgw1 · 05/04/2023 12:49

Quite different.

What is your point jgw1? Or should I ask, what was your point, before you discovered these are two different places in the North?

The obvious being that we have men living in our cities who have very different cultural values from those indigenous, notwithstanding that we have white paedophiles as well. The sky is blue when it's not grey and politics is always muddy.

I'm glad they have been apprehended. Let's hope their victims get more help than the Rotherham girls who were accused of lying, arrested instead of their rapists and told they had consented to sex (despite some being under 16, so that they cannot consent to sex).
