Suella Braverman vows to stamp out grooming gangs behind organised child sex abuse

The Home Secretary, writing in The Mail on Sunday, pledges to 'track down and punish the grooming gangs with the same sense of mission and determination' used to pursue the murderers of Stephen Lawrence, the black British teenager who was killed in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in South London in 1993.

Ms Braverman, who was born in Harrow, in North-West London, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father, writes: 'The time has come to make right one of the greatest injustices seen in Britain in modern times. The systematic rape, exploitation and abuse of young girls by organised gangs of older men – and the disgraceful failure of the authorities to act despite ample evidence – is a stain on our country.'

A Buddhist, Ms Braverman describes the 'perpetrators' as 'groups of men, almost all British-Pakistani, who hold cultural attitudes completely incompatible with British values'.

I am not sure if this is just the DM take on what she said, or if it accurately reflects what she said.

If she did say this and not talk about how men of all cultures, given the opportunity, have and will exploit young women, then she is letting down all the women who are exploited.

I know it is an opinion piece, but still.

EndlessTea · 04/04/2023 18:08

Out of interest, does anyone enjoy reading that sort of writing?

Howpo · 04/04/2023 18:08

There is only so much an article of this type can detail but i get your point.

It takes all of 2 or 3 mins to read and its as interesting to read her views as it is say someone like Braverman's

At the end of the day, we all want CSE to stop and become a thing of the past.

EndlessTea · 04/04/2023 18:11

I agree with her that getting regular reports would be helpful, but being jaded and cynical as I am, from feeling betrayed by organisations like the NSPCC who are supposed to be about child protection and academia which is supposed to be about sophisticating knowledge, I don’t know who I’d bloody trust to carry out the annual report.

Dr Ella Cockbain is an associate professor in security and crime science at University College London, and research group lead on human trafficking, smuggling and exploitation

Bit harsh to call her a thicko tbh

She doesn't agree with me, so she must be thick.
Plus she appears to be some kind of expert. And we know that we don't like and respect experts and their facts. What was it Gove said?

I'm told that there are people on this thread who don't want CSE to stop. I haven't seen anyone comment to that effect myself, but apparantly some posters have.

Look, I have been very disappointed by many people who have the title of doctor or professor in recent years. It doesn’t means someone is smart.

I like experts. In fact I really love experts who are able to communicate and share their expertise. Some seem a little hampered in that regard.

I was supported by Maggie when I was accused of a hate crime for describing a man who was grooming 13/14 yo girls in Calderdale. It is a very difficult topic to navigate.

Accusations of hate crime are being used to prevent anyone speaking up against the oppressors of women and girls. It's very telling that misogyny, an obvious cause of much crime against a specific group with a protected characteristic, doesn't count in hate crime.

I defy some people on this thread to listen to Samantha Smith talk and then continue to tie themselves in knots in an attempt to score political points.

Give your heads a wobble.

But at least they now appear to know what a woman is, and have taken steps to protecting female only categories, and to halting live ideological motivated experimentation on children via puberty blockers.

On the subject of how awful Braverman is, will you join me @NotHavingIt in condeming the removal of modern slavery protections for those who are traffiked into the sex trade in the UK that she recently announced?

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/04/2023 09:46

A woman is an adult human female. The sex that have had their rights destroyed by 13 years of Tory government in the UK.

SB's words are worthless wittering from the Woman hating Tory party. I'm bewildered as to why people keep falling for their lies. The reality is that the Tories have practically decriminalised rape in this country.

If you think that the Tories have destroyed women's rights then see what Labour have in store for us...

I'm imagining that the trafficking gangs are making use and taking adavantage of such measures, and that once the women arrive, they are then passed on to gangs already resiebnt in the country. Also, I understand what is happening is that young men who are arriving from places such as Albania, on arrival, are disappeared from hostels and other accommodation and are being lured, or forced, to work in cannabis factories or in county lines drug gangs.

NotHavingIt · 04/04/2023 18:58

If you put a stop to the boats - then you also put a stop to much of the trafficking.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/05/young-albanian-men-viciously-exploited-after-arriving-in-uk

Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Suella Braverman, said: “Today’s operation sends a clear message that we are committed to bringing to justice the criminal gangs behind these deadly journeys across the Channel. The NCA is carrying out vital work with our international partners to tackle people smuggling networks who treat human lives as a commodity.
“We will use every tool at our disposal to go further and faster in disrupting their business model, deterring illegal migration and saving lives. We will leave no stone unturned to find new ways to curb this crisis and ensure those responsible feel the full force of the law.”
Two weeks ago an Albanian OCG involved in smuggling migrants to the UK via Spain was dismantled following a joint operation between the NCA and Spanish Guardia Civil.
Seven suspects were arrested after mainly Albanian migrants were moved through the northern cities of Bilbao and Santander into the UK using ferries and freight shipping routes to Portsmouth, Southampton and Liverpool.

Young Albanian men ‘viciously exploited’ after arriving in UK

Charity says asylum seekers from Albania travel to the UK primarily because of poverty and corruption

"Mr Brocklesby said: “We do know, anecdotally, speaking to police forces around the country, that if an Albanian illegal migrant is arrested in a cannabis grow, then often the first thing they do is claim to be a victim of trafficking.
“That is very different to most other users of the national referral mechanism (the process for identifying victims of modern slavery). It is, in many ways, blatant manipulation and it is something we believe from Albania is instilled in them before they actually arrive in the UK.”

He also suggested there are “professional enablers” operating within the “legitimate Albanian community” who “assist illegal migration in many ways”, such as accountants, lawyers and security guards helping people who have arrived make a life in the UK.

So not condemning taking protections away from those who are traffiked then.
