Suella Braverman vows to stamp out grooming gangs behind organised child sex abuse

IwantToRetire · 03/04/2023 00:30

The Home Secretary, writing in The Mail on Sunday, pledges to 'track down and punish the grooming gangs with the same sense of mission and determination' used to pursue the murderers of Stephen Lawrence, the black British teenager who was killed in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in South London in 1993.

Ms Braverman, who was born in Harrow, in North-West London, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father, writes: 'The time has come to make right one of the greatest injustices seen in Britain in modern times. The systematic rape, exploitation and abuse of young girls by organised gangs of older men – and the disgraceful failure of the authorities to act despite ample evidence – is a stain on our country.'

A Buddhist, Ms Braverman describes the 'perpetrators' as 'groups of men, almost all British-Pakistani, who hold cultural attitudes completely incompatible with British values'.

I am not sure if this is just the DM take on what she said, or if it accurately reflects what she said.

If she did say this and not talk about how men of all cultures, given the opportunity, have and will exploit young women, then she is letting down all the women who are exploited.

I'm sick of people putting loyalty to the Tory party and patriarchy before women and girls.

I'll vote for any party that will solve the issues that women and girls currently face. I don't like the Tories. But I don't like labour either. I'm not going to vote for a party where the leader won't say what a woman is. If KS lies about that basic fact, then he is entirely untrustworthy as far as I'm concerned.

Bingo.

PM Theresa May brought in Self ID. She thought TWAW. PM Boris Johnson refused to say that only women have a cervix. PM Sunak said that women were whatever Boris Johnson said. The Tories have written genderwoo into policy and law since 2017. Rape has been practically decriminalised under Conservative government.

The Tories don't give a shit about women and girls. They have demonstrated that they'll sell us out to men every time. We have been fucked every way by them.

Jonei · 03/04/2023 23:19

Because of course I absolutely have no doubt, you don't know what a woman is either jgw1. That's one thing I know without a doubt, without even bothering to search your name. And because of people like you, that is why labour are losing women.

So will labour. Poor pickings indeed. But the Tories being poor doesn't mean I will hand my vote to labour. Not that I have decided who I will vote for yet. But whilst KS is there, it certainly won't be labour.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/04/2023 23:23

Vote how you wish @Jonei but if you vote Conservative, don't pretend you're doing it for women.

Not in my name.Angry

I see you have given up trying to discuss why Braverman might suddenly have decided today to tackle grooming gangs after 13 years of supporting a government that has made the situation worse. You had best be careful because the whataboutery police won't like it.

Not particularly. I'm just ignoring you to be honest. I don't really find your constant derailing meaningful. And I don't really care about the reasons as long as good outcomes are achieved for those girls. Hope this clears things up for you.

I don't care if it's in your name or not. And I will vote for whoever I want for whatever reason I want. And a vote for labour imo is not certainly not a vote for women. You vote how you want too. Fill your boots.

Fair enough, if you haven't got anything to say about Braverman don't say anything. Probably a good policy.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/04/2023 23:42

Do you know who the most profligate rape for Profit, sex traffickers in the UK are atm @Jonei? Loan sharks.

After 13 years of Tory government, what outcomes are better for women and children than they were in 2010?

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/04/2023 23:45

As a woman I know my place and it is important for me to vote for a party that knows how to keep me in my place. I must doff my cap to them and their superior intellect and education and look up to their immense cleverness and wealth. This is why the Conservatives will always be my party.

Jonei · 03/04/2023 23:48

And you think labour isn't? Sure thing. 😂

I'll weigh it up and take the best from a bad bunch.

So. Not labour.

Are you fed up with Braverman's whataboutery as well when she ought to be getting on with running the Home office. It is really rather tedious isn't it.

Gawd. Catching up with this thread was a waste of time.

I feel as though labour activists are going into overdrive on mumsnet at the moment. It’s annoying.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/04/2023 00:17

Not a Labour activist.
Never been a Labour supporter or voter.

I am a woman in the UK whose rights have been destroyed by the Tory party. I get that the facts are annoying for Conservative voters, but tough shit. I won't wheesht.

This is FWR. Not the Conservative supporters club.Hmm

Only Tory voters get annoyed when anyone criticises the Conservative government's record on women's rights.

LexMitior · 04/04/2023 00:31

I can't stand Braverman and her policies are grotesque. Doubtless on this it's a politically driven focus group of core voters the Conservatives have had plenty of time to do something about.

But the actual issue is very serious. It is not going away. Britain has not thought about, nor did its politicians ever really think back in the 1960s and 1970s when we were trying to get away from a Victorian culture and Christianity what mass migration would mean and what values would come with it.

Grooming gangs aren't new. Girls being exploited from Council run care isn't new either. What was new was the failure of the police and local authorities to do anything because a worry about racism.

And in crime, I don't see why that matters. It shouldn't. I can totally get why people were outraged because they were told race didn't matter. But it did.

I hope those women who were abused sue seventy shades of shit out of those men, and any woman to do the same if she's lucky enough to get through the starved of money criminal justice system. Perhaps if Braverman is really concerned, she can get a bit more funding for the actual work that still needs doing.

beastlyslumber · 04/04/2023 00:33

EndlessTea · 03/04/2023 19:42

If, for ideologically comfortable reasons, you lump all child sexual exploitation gangs together, then of course you are going to get the result you are after, in a majority white country, that most perpetrators are white.

Isn’t that nice and neat?

Jimi Savile, was part of a dodgy network stretching to every corner of the country- from northern Scotland to Jersey.

This network does not seem to intersect with the Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs, so focusing on white men as the ‘majority perpetrators’ of CSE is not going to help police get a handle on those gangs or help their victims.

I think it's great if SB is going to take this on. It's great she's made the statement that the behaviour of these gangs is incompatible with British values. I'd love for Britain to be a place where rape and vawg was not tolerated. Very supportive of SB taking action towards this.
