The murderer who came in and killed 3 children and 3 adults is trans and called Audrey, I am confused as to their biological sex.

I don't understand why the headlines are screaming TRANS... would they scream GAY or STRAIGHT or BI?

A shooter is a shooter is a shooter. Being trans is neither here nor there.

Awful, hateful reporting.

It's because first reports said the shooter was female, and a female mass shooter is rare.

So people immediately wondered if the shooter was female, or a transwoman (a male).

It's not about being trans. It's about being male or female. And the confusion is down to past media reporting (and police recording) that refused to reference the sex of suspects, only their gender. Thus making people suspicious when the rare female violent criminal turns up in the headlines. In numerous cases, that suspicion has been justified and the 'woman' offender turns out to be a man who identifies as a woman.

And, yeah, I expect if they knew the shooter was gay, the headlines would be screaming that. Like they do when the killer is black. Or Asian. Or Native American. Cuz bigotry.

Why are the usually very vigilant mumsnet mods not deleting all the posts that are misgendering this trans man?

Possibly because she shot six people ?

I can't even go there with American news reports any more. Until they decide they care about human lives more than the right to bear arms, what's the point? I cannot imagine what it's like sending a child to school in America. Or growing up accepting this as a risk.

If the shooter is a transman how the fuck do Guardian explain the deadnaming and misgendering? Owen Jones is gonna explode, right? There's no way they'd be quite so blatant in their misogynist double standards, is there?

The guardian article is very carefully written to contain no pronouns at all, from what I can see. Repeated references to "the shooter", and "Hale".

No he's or she's to be found.

And its the 128th mass shooting this year. It's only March.

I can't vouch for the veracity of this. But a victim of a covered-up scandal involving the sexual abuse of children would make some sense....

Typo? You meant sex, not gender.

Yup yup. Although, for me, I use them interchangably as I do not believe there is any such thing as having a gender that is different from one's natal sex.

It would make the murder of three children 'make some sense'? Rilly??

ZombieMumEB · 28/03/2023 10:15

Such sad news, condolences to the victims families.

I have seen a few media outlets refer to the killer as "the shooter" - so perhaps this is a new gender like "rapist"?

Looks like trans women are women but trans men are not men.

Perfectly put.

twelly · 28/03/2023 09:46

My view is that there should be no prefix for with the person being referred to as either male or female. This tragic event is just awful for the families and not about the gender of the shooter.

This. Unless the gender of the shooter has a direct bearing on things it’s irrelevant and just muddies the waters even further. As evidenced here.

Poor victims, horrendous for families left behind.

America needs to sort the gun laws out asap.

I’m not sure they can

Biden knows the issue but can’t see to pass anything to stop it

Newnamefor23 · 28/03/2023 10:19

Does it matter?

Another 6 dead, another 6 families irrevocably scarred.

1 person who has flipped, in a far bigger way than changing their sex/gender/ identity.

They’ve flipped in a place where they have easy access to lethal weapons.

In a place where there is a manner of thinking, of some, that killing others is a good way of making a statement.

In a place where a large number of people seem to think that numerous deaths are a worthwhile price to pay to have their second amendment gun rights. Or they disconnect their rights from the deaths of others.

Some sourced saying “legally obtained” again does that matter?

The deaths of 6 yesterday and who knows how many today, tomorrow etc is a bigger issue.

Gingernaut · 28/03/2023 10:19

FtM trans man

A man puts on a wig and make up, commits a crime but he's still a woman

A woman takes testosterone, 'comes out' as male but is 'dead named' and still a woman when she commits a crime.

HTH

Yes - SEX.

The conflation of "sex" with "gender" underlies this ideology.

I think it’s possibly an other Americanisation - this is how the perpetrators are frequently referred to in the USA.

MarriedMama23 · 28/03/2023 10:19

I sincerely hope whatever IT identifies as is burning in hell (I'm all for trans rights but imo this person has lost the right to be called by any pronoun!)

Mirabai · 28/03/2023 10:20

So FTM felons are female and MTF felons are female and go to female prisons.

Interesting.

Tealsofa · 28/03/2023 10:21

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2023 06:11

It's confusing because the media seem to call male rapists 'she' when they identify as female but a female shooter 'she' when they identify as male.

It does look like bias but I'm sure it can't be.

I agree with this

I think the debate around the sex/gender of the shooter (for want of a better ‘inclusive’ term - ‘gunperson’ ?) is taking away from what will probably turn out to be the main issue. Reportedly they were a former student at the school, so it may be rooted in revenge.

Aren't you? Oh well then. Good thing I don't care what you are or are not keen on.

Mirabai · 28/03/2023 10:26

Of course it fucking matters.

FTM murderer - named as female, tried as female -> female prison.

MTF rapist - named as female, tried as female -> female prison where ‘she’ sexually assaults female prisoners.

I can't believe that the first thing that MN's first collective thought around this tragic event was 'was (s)he trans'?

Some of you have lost the plot. Seriously.

You can of course use whatever words you want to and are no obligation to care whether other people understand what you’re saying or not.

But I guarantee some people will misinterpret what you’re saying if you use gender and sex interchangeably.

Was it the first thought? The first thought was - how awful those poor people. Someway down the list comes the confusion over the gender identity of the killer. Female killers are unusual, most school shootings in the US are male. So which is it? Do you really don’t grasp that the sex/gender of a mass murderer is important?
