Graham Linehan interview in The Times (17 March 2023)

From both ends of the trans debate, I am told his interventions are “counterproductive”, “a net bad” and “unhinged”. Some gender-critical women — that is, women who agree with him — believe he craves attention, martyrdom and leadership of a movement whose fight is not even his. One mentions that he was once pro-porn and sex work, which he admits to being before “talking to feminists” changed his mind. Over on the other side of the battle lines, an activist dismisses him as a fringe character full of hot air. None of these people is prepared, however, to go on the record, mostly saying they fear he will retaliate in his customary style.

There is one admirable exception. She is Kathleen Stock, the radical feminist philosopher who resigned from the University of Sussex in 2021 after a campaign by “queer, trans and non-binary” students who wanted her fired. “Graham and I have clashed in the past,” she says, “and we probably aren’t each other’s favourite people. But I think it’s fair to say he’s genuinely committed to fighting what he believes is a woman-harming and child-harming ideology (and I agree with him on that); and he talks to some demographics — particularly ordinary blokes, who don’t really care so much about niceties of language and aren’t put off by his sometimes bludgeoning style — that others don’t necessarily reach.”

Yep, plus, subscriptions are voluntary. He's not stealing anything. If he's getting 90k, he's getting it from people who think that what he's doing has enough value to merit it.

RufustheSpeculatingreindeer · 19/03/2023 18:41

I'd be perfectly happy if he was earning £90k from substack subscriptions

yes, if he is supporting himself through this then well done glinner

And as an active internet user he seems to tweet/post about this issue maybe every hour for what, 5 years?

What a blessing it is for the lazier majority of humans when nature from time to time throws up a person who is single minded in their pursuit of truth and will simply not give up.

Beautiful, Scrolling!

I mean he's not my cup of tea and I don't think - as this thread suggests - that he is this wholly selfless saint who has put his life on the line for women. I think there are varied reasons why he has such a commitment to this fight, and it's not JUST that he is motivated by outrage at the injustice of gender identity activism. And so what? That's fine too, so I'm not sure why I am being criticised. But he is clearly obsessed with this debate, there is no doubt about that. I partly understand why - it feels so crazy you can't help get really absorbed in the surrealness of it all - but it's also clearly very personal for him. His efforts at exposing the craziness are obviously motivated by wanting to be proven right as opposed to pure selflessness. Also he WAS a "woke"/TRA style campaigner pre 2018 himself, and a very loud one, which must add some complicated feelings for him

Tradeup · 19/03/2023 19:39

Whatever his reasons and motives, he is a brave man. I don’t see him as a saint, and I prefer it that way. I see him as a man who just couldn’t deny reality and live with himself.

I would imagine his recent time in the woke trenches has helped him see how deluded we can be when we are not hearing all sides and opinions in a debate, especially the most important such as detransitioners who have lived through the entire experience of being so influenced by a socially contagious tsunami of propaganda.

He understands the essence of this fight against Gender Ideology is protecting women’s rights and language and protecting children. Every person willing to help roll back this toxic dumpster fire of lies is OK in my book. We not going to agree on everything, but we do agree on priorities and that’s all that matters. Graham has already seen how dangerous it is to be too puritanical about your allies from his previous incarnation as a right-on wokester, as a result you can ignore the voices of the very people most negatively affected.

Agree

To quote part of @ScrollingLeaves post

"What a blessing it is for the lazier majority of humans when nature from time to time throws up a person who is single minded in their pursuit of truth and will simply not give up."

Hannah Barnes will be earning money off Time to Think (available at all good bookstores and, occasionally, Waterstones 😉).

😂

The garden is growing, more veg still needed.

Righthandcider · 20/03/2023 09:37

he is clearly obsessed with this debate, there is no doubt about that.

When I see words like 'obsessed' it sounds like an attempt to discredit him as a nutter, with an additional hint that he has some sort of puerile interest in all this. Don't listen to him, he's a lunatic. It's the same tactic used against women who don't believe TWAW and don't want them in women's spaces, or the people horrified about Wi Spa, who are apparently just 'obsessed' with other people's genitals.

He's not obsessed, he's dedicated. Like many other people who give all their time and energy to a cause they believe in and that frankly needs all the loud, influential voices it can get.

Bellaisoneluckywoman · 20/03/2023 09:39

Hear bloody hear @Righthandcider

ScribblingPixie · 20/03/2023 11:05

He's publishing his material and people are paying subscriptions directly to him to read it, in the same way that a newspaper or magazine does. That's the smart thing to do, especially when businesses won't commission your work or pay only a pittance for it. It's something I'm seeing a lot from writers, and good for them. Why the fuck should they scrape a living when they're as talented and valuable as Linehan? He would have been earning way more before he got involved in this.

Yes, less than 5k to go now. Nearly there...!

I've donated twice already. Ignore my user name in this context.

ILikeDungs · 20/03/2023 20:09

Just put in a row of pak choi.

How about some parsley? Anyone?

StripyShirt · 20/03/2023 20:34

Count Arthur Strong was unforgiveable, but his other work was fab and he seems like a good chap with a lot more to offer 🙂 He's also right and deserves support. Will donate something.....

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/03/2023 22:37

"I think the problematic "I said I'm from Iran" episode in the IT Crowd is super funny. Today, not acceptable. The same as how trans were portrayed in Ace Ventura."

We'll ignore the fact that the joke wasn't at the expense of the transwoman (in fact, it was sympathetic to them) but the boss bloke.

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/03/2023 08:31

Just under £2k to go now.
What a relief.

I know he's Marmite but I love the Count.Ted and IT Crowd are brilliant. Black Books is good in parts but I couldn't really get into it.

Digging now.

StripyShirt · 21/03/2023 11:53

Ah! Black Books is one of my favourite things ever 🙂. I only heard the Count on radio, however, so maybe the TV version was better.

Righthandcider · 21/03/2023 12:17

Just added a radish. Only £1320 to go.

Spidergloves · 21/03/2023 14:04

Just £20 to go now.

Righthandcider · 21/03/2023 14:31

Looks like it's £915 to go still.

Spidergloves · 21/03/2023 14:33

Good Lord I must be blind 😂
