Cis vs thabit

Cis is a term that has been imposed on people whose gender is consistent with their birth gender. It's a horrible sounding word and sounds like sissy so it's very inappropriate. Alternatives like birth gender and biological gender are contested and clumsy. So how about using the Arabic word for "consistent" which sounds rather nice: "thabit"?

Different word same problem

It's a 'nope' from me

Mumteedum · 21/02/2023 20:36

I'm fine with woman. I don't feel I need an extra qualifier. If others do then fine, but if we're all respecting how people want to self describe, then I'd like the same principle.

PicklesAndTequila · 21/02/2023 20:37

No thank you.

PronounssheRa · 21/02/2023 20:37

Nope. It will still mean a belief in gender identity is imposed on everyone including non believers.

Happylittlechicken · 21/02/2023 20:39

Ummm… there is no such thing as birth gender. Sex is observed and noted. No one can tell if a baby is agender, xenogender, nekogender or a greygender demiboi etc as soon as it’s born, that’s why we stick with the sex which can be observed way before birth.
no such thing as biological gender either. Gender is a bullshit set of stereotypes that is regressive and outdated and therefore irrelevant. So we don’t need any word. Ta though.

flyingbuttress43 · 21/02/2023 20:39

Woman does not need a qualifer: it does what it says on the tin.

I couldn’t agree more, @Happylittlechicken!!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/02/2023 20:41

No. Woman is fine.

Anyway let us say it did take off, what makes you think it won’t get appropriated? They’re not going to let us be the only ‘consistent’ women, are they?

Randobelia · 21/02/2023 20:41

Men

Women

Etc

Fairislefandango · 21/02/2023 20:42

Confused The problem with 'cis' isn't the way it sounds. The problem is with the concept itself. Also, you seem to be getting confused with the word 'gender'. There's no such thing as 'birth gender'. There is sex - male or female, observed (not assigned) at birth. And gender, which is a set of behavioural stereotypes, stereotypical personality traits and clothing preferences traditionally associated with female people eand make people. At birth, babies do not have a gender. They have a sex.

TheDogsMother · 21/02/2023 20:42

No need. I'm a woman, not a subset of women.

ReunitedThorns · 21/02/2023 20:42

What term do you use to describe yourself as not having 6 fingers (Polydactyly) on each hand?

Fairislefandango · 21/02/2023 20:42

Cross-posted with @Happylittlechicken !

CheeseDreamsTonight · 21/02/2023 20:43

I just don't have a separate gender identity. I am a woman. I am female. There is no innate gender identity. The issue isn't the word; it's the implication and assumption (don't get me started on how it's wrong for us to assume yet...) that we all have an innate identity. Pisses me right off.

Zonder · 21/02/2023 20:45

What @Happylittlechicken and @Fairislefandango said.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 21/02/2023 20:45

Yup. No gender identity here. Based on my life and my loves modern day youth would think I was a transman. Nope. Just a woman who is bossy and likes maths.

StiggyZardust · 21/02/2023 20:46

Woman works nicely for me.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 21/02/2023 20:47

Yes. It’s not the word itself that’s the problem, it’s the concept.

Gender is all about sexist social constructs, which is why I refuse to have one.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 21/02/2023 20:47

No.

I don't need any sort of word to signify what I am or am not, other than woman.

I do not have a gender, I do not believe in gender as a social construct. I believe what is being called 'gender' is just a set of regressive stereotypes.

I just have a personality, and things I like and do not like. None of them are 'girl things' or 'boy things' they are just 'things'.

By using 'cis' or any other qualifier, it signifying that I'm a believer in gender identity. I am not.

I'm also atheist. This is like asking me 'what's your religion? Oh, you don't have one? So if you don't like being called Catholic I'll just call you Protestant, okay?'

Wiccan · 21/02/2023 20:48

Women is just fine as it always has been thanks . Stop forcing this shit on us !

funnelfan · 21/02/2023 20:49

Out of all the arguments put forward against using the prefix "cis", I have never, ever seen criticism that it sounds like "sissy". Given the connotations of the word "sissy" around sexuality and gender identity, I would be Hmm at this interpretation arising.

No prefix needed whatsoever. "Woman" does the job nicely thank you, adult human females are not a sub-type of their own sex.

VforVienetta · 21/02/2023 20:53

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins you forgot "Chickenself" Wink

FrancescaContini · 21/02/2023 20:54

What are you on about, OP? You just don’t get it. We don’t want any word that assumes an acceptance of gender ideology - which is what the word “consistent” does, whichever language you choose to translate it into.

We have a word already: woman.
