They used to be re-used. First only glass bottles and you could tell they were washed and worn after a while.
Then there were thick plastic bottles which also were washed and re-used; up to 25 times or some such. They were marked each time.
Now the plastic is thin and flimsy so they are crushed and melted down.

Metal cans are also recycled.
Glass goes in its own recycling with no «pawn».

To me deposit schemes make sense for bottles that will be reused.

A deposit scheme for bottles and cans that currently get put in a bin at you back door is daft.
If people cannot be bothered to recycle in the kitchen they are not going to bother carting stuff back to the shops to que up to put them in a bottle bank.
There is also a cost associated with these bottle banks to the shops, where are they recouping that cost, from the customer along with the 20p deposit.
Multipack bottles don't have bar codes- how do you scan them to get the money back?

It's a typical example of changing something that currently works reasonably well, with something that sounds good, but just a whole lot less effect.
