Does anyone know why NS is so stuck on this issue? The majority don't agree with her, and it makes no sense, and as a woman she must be capable of understanding the concerns...so what's the motive?

Usually following the money gets you an answer, but in this case I still think it boils down to getting another indy ref. It's her only goal in life. I think she picked trans because its the untouchable class and anyone who dared to raise concerns could be shouted down as terfs bigots etc and she would look like the good #bekind, progressive warrior. I bet you she knew full well it was unpopular in the UK and also would clash with equality laws and pinned her hopes on the fact the government would s35 it.
She could then use that to scream about Scotland being overruled thus getting more support for her indy ref agenda and people wouldn't be that arsed because it only affected women and we know that no one cares about our rights so wouldn't be likely to fight it.
Unfortunately, Isla Bryson and the sunlight on the issue threw a massive fuck off spanner in the works, because now she couldn't stand firm saying twaw and should be treated as women in all respects without admitting that that also meant putting a vile rapist in with vulnerable women.

Does anyone know why NS is so stuck on this issue?
I understand that gender is a devolved matter so NS could write Scots law regarding gender that clashed with UK law regarding Equalities legislation. She manufactured a problem so that she could jump up and down saying "rotten Westminster trying to stop Holyrood doing stuff! I demand another independence referendum".

Because she a) is obsessed with independence so had to pick a fight with Westminster and b) is in bed with the Greens so has to keep them and their bonkers policies happy.

She needs the Greens on board for her majority

She thinks it is progressive and wants to align Scotland with "progressive" countries in opposition to UK (cf Canada, Ireland, NZ, Aus)

She thinks it would make a useful point if difference with UK for campaignimg purposes.

My guess (just a guess) is that she wanted a fight with Westminster which she could spin as good, progressive SNP against evil Tories, encouraging people towards Independence.

Which would explain why a bunch of perfectly sensible amendments were voted down - they wanted Westminster to invoke Section 35. They needed the Bill to impact on the rest of the UK.

The problem now is that it’s blowing up in her face. A majority of Scots see this as an awful Bill, not a progressive one - so rather than ‘evil Tories’ we’ve got ‘sensible Westminster’. Then there’s the perfect storm of Adam the convicted rapist insisting he’s a woman in the face of some pretty convincing evidence that he really isn’t - and so raising all sorts of questions about the validity of self ID.

But in political life, you can’t just admit you deliberately put forward a cr*p bill to get a reaction from your opponents. That’s a resigning matter.

I do often wonder if something more sinister is going on. Why have so many people in business, the media, education and politics bought into this bonkers ideology so much where the whims of substantially less than 1% of the population are such a driver in policies and have previously been pretty much untouchable.

The bonkers part of the SNP's deal with the Greens is that if NS had agreed to the amendments which addressed the safeguarding concerns then Westminster wouldn't have got involved and the SNP/Greens probably would have pushed an amended GRR bill through at Holyrood.

Now she's in a legal fight with Westminster over a bill which was unpopular with the Scottish electorate, the predicted problems with self ID have very quickly become apparent and the unionists are making hay; it looks like she might have destroyed her dream of Scottish independence whilst she was busy destroying women's rights.

I wonder if she stopped at any point to question why the Greens were so opposed to safeguarding amendments.
