Continuation of Thread 2.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Brave testimony from one of the women forced to swim against, and change with, Lia Thomas.

I’ve been ignorant, avoided the subject because no matter how careful and tactful and neutral I tried to be - and words are a thing I’m usually good with - someone would get enraged. It was like Israel/Palestine, “debate” best avoided. Although I blocked someone on Twitter who “unfollowed” me for the crime of following JKR - not liking, retweeting or commenting on her tweets, just following her - I did then unfollow JKR just to avoid unnecessary inflammation. FFS.

But this week I feel as though my eyes have been opened.

Wait till the anger kicks in. The contempt, mockery and abuse with which women have been treated, the intimidation, the DARVO, institutional capture etc is an object lesson in misogyny from people who I'd previously thought of as friends and allies. Eye opening is the word. And I think more and more women are experiencing it. I am full of admiration for the tireless bravery for those women who have led this movement in the face of such hostility.

MavisMcMinty · 31/01/2023 15:40

I used JKR as an example because I’d read her tweets and articles and think her entirely reasonable, no hatred or prejudice that I could see, then watch hundreds and thousands of people racing to abuse and criticise her. I assumed I must be missing something, hence my bafflement and disengagement with the topic, which as a reclusive rural shut-in seemed to have no bearing on my life anyway.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 31/01/2023 17:09

I only started following JKR this week but that was because I thought I'd been following her for a while and also because I hadn't followed her before because I'm not a Harry Potter person. I follow a large number of TERFs and I'm sure I've lost followers because of it. But, you know, behold the field in which I grow my fucks, it is a barren place where your ideology will find no purchase, culty members.

The results from the Call for Evidence consultation for the VAWG funding review -

www.gov.scot/publications/analysis-call-evidence-responses-violence-against-women-girls-funding-review/

Unsurprisingly, there were many responses which emphasised the need for single sex spaces and services.

Winterborne74 · 31/01/2023 17:50

Not worth a thread of its own, but wtf is wrong with (some) men:

www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/23290003.investigation-firefighters-photographing-dead-women/

SinnerBoy · 31/01/2023 19:12

And women, apparently:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jan/27/met-police-officer-sacked-for-requesting-photo-of-dead-man

PC Bonnie Murphy, who asked colleague Jamie Lewis to send her a photo of a decomposed body to show her family, was dismissed without notice.

duc748 · 31/01/2023 19:20

The officer who took the photo of the dead man had a disciplinary meeting for misconduct in August 2022 and was ordered to take the reflective practice review process to learn and reflect on their actions.

Reflect. Ah, that's all right, then. 🙄

MmePoppySeedDefage · 31/01/2023 22:28

Someone posted on another thread but it's right.

How lucky it was that we had the combination of the SNP/Green GRR Bill, the Section 35 challenge, and 'Isla Bryson' in such a short period of time that not many media outlets have been able to ignore them. (Has the Guardian?)

This combination of very unfortunate events has drawn attention to the other violent trans identifying men that have been locked up for some while with vulnerable women in the Scottish Prisons Service.

So today we've seen some cracking interviews with a guilty-looking Nicole Sturgeon and some LIBDem woman, defending the indefensible and trying variously to claim that there are robust risk assessments, or that the risk assessment process is deeply flawed and Nicola is right to seek to change it.

I feel for the poor women locked up with these low-lifes, but some good will hopefully come of their suffering.

IcakethereforeIam · 31/01/2023 22:35

I'm sick of hearing them say 'risk assessment', like it's some kind of magic incantation. When they clearly don't know/care what the fuck they're talking about.

And having seen it it isn't exactly women centred or robust!

SinnerBoy · 31/01/2023 23:10

Perhaps they just mis-spelled Roblox?

Boiledbeetle · 31/01/2023 23:13

😂

Yes plus the media outlets were provided with the perfect illustration of the lunacy of allowing self ID, with that incredible photo of the transwomen rapist turning up at court with his penis clearly on show for all to see. We could not have wished for a better photo.

Boiledbeetle · 31/01/2023 23:15

I'm just imagining him turning up at the men's prison with fake nails, and a pink suitcase full of women's clothes and underwear!

He's going to be so popular. Or get the crap beat out of him for Fucking it up for everyone else. Probably both.

LizzieSiddal · 31/01/2023 23:19

@Boiledbeetle I expect he’ll have a lawsuit brewing in 3, 2, 1 as he may not have immediate access to nail varnish.

Boiledbeetle · 31/01/2023 23:20

I listened to the recording of him about the bt Bill. He did good girl voice. He definitely puts paid to the wouldn't s pend three months pretending thing. He put more effort in than most.

IcakethereforeIam · 31/01/2023 23:56

We've not heard the last of him. Lawsuit and/or he'll get assaulted, or claim to have been, in prison. He's clearly not shy of seeking compensation.

mach2 · 01/02/2023 06:47

A risk assessment should go like this:

Is the prisoner male? Y/N

Y - Incarcerate in male prison.

StephanieSuperpowers · 01/02/2023 08:04

Yep, that is the failsafe assessment to keep rapists out of women's prisons.

Yes it's completely bizarre isn't it? They must think that the public are stupid. It's pretty clear to everyone that there is a massive flaw in a risk assessment process that concludes it is safe to house a convicted rapist in a women's prison.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 01/02/2023 09:01

I almost skipped this thread, because the title is a little niche, but the linked Twitter thread is well worth a read - very well articulated points that apply globally: www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4732993-310123-interesting-twitter-thread-from-leor-sapir-about-finnish-paediatric-bodys-position

ScrollingLeaves · 01/02/2023 19:02

How does the law work with games?
What would the On Line Harms Bill say in relation to this being something played on line?
