Non-binary biological boy at DD's girls' school: toilets

Hello, a non-binary biological boy has started at DD's girls' school.

Are there any regulations around what toilets they need to use? I just wondered what the actual legal position on this is. Thank you.

What country is the school in?

ItsHitTheFanNow · 18/01/2023 17:13

Sorry, it's in England.

When we did school visits back in October, all the schools had toilets which were self contained units (floor to ceiling doors) and these areas were open to the corridors. I was surprised, but think it's better from a safety perspective.

Does your school have these loos? If so, boys and girls use any as they are single enclosed units (sinks and sani bins in all).

Why has a girls' school accepted a student who doesn't even identify as a girl?

lifeturnsonadime · 18/01/2023 17:20

If there are single sex toilets then the child should surely use the one that corresponds with their sex if they identify as non binary.

There can't be an alternative argument as they are not even claiming to be female.

lifeturnsonadime · 18/01/2023 17:21

Wow I'd missed that this was a girls school.

My thoughts exactly. My DD goes to a girls school and I won't tolerate any biological boy joining. There are usually plenty of coed schools to attend. Why a girls school?

Lilgamesh2 · 18/01/2023 17:23

Well it's not a girls school anymore. Did they write to parents to inform them that their single sex school is going co-Ed?

yousmellnice · 18/01/2023 17:24

If they are non-binary does that mean they don't identify as a girl or a boy? So they can't go to a girls school or a boys school?

RoseslnTheHospital · 18/01/2023 17:24

Is this a private school?

Rightsraptor · 18/01/2023 17:24

Do please tell us @ItsHitTheFanNow, how this boy was accepted at a girls' school? Because it is no longer a girls' school but mixed sex now he's there.

Thank you. DD thinks all the cubicles are fully enclosed but the sinks are outside the cubicles. Does that make a difference?

I have no idea!

So it's no longer a girls' school. This boy is non binary, so why can't he be non binary in a boys' school or mixed sex school? Fucking ridiculous.

ItsHitTheFanNow · 18/01/2023 17:26

DD says the toilets have a female symbol on them.

OP posts:
yousmellnice · 18/01/2023 17:27

Are they allowed in on the days they feel a bit more female?

No, I haven't heard anything from the school. The prep is co-Ed but the senior school is supposed to be girls only.

I don't know what the legal position is on this.

If it's a private school they can pretty much do what they want, in terms of who they allow to attend. I think they would be bound by the law in terms of toilets and changing rooms which is that they should be single sex or individual and completely self contained including sinks and sanitary bins.

ItsHitTheFanNow · 18/01/2023 17:32

DD says there are separate male and female toilets for teachers but, as it's a girls' school, there are obviously only girls' toilets for pupils.

Many thanks. Do you have a link for the law on this?
