Complications from trans surgery!

I know it's a daily mail article but I can't help thinking. We only ever hear positive stories but the figures tell us this. I really hope the men and woman are getting the support they need from these complications. 🥺

Half of trans surgery patients suffer pain, sexual issues years later mol.im/a/11629421 via dailym.ai/android

People don't just do it for fun. I just hope they get shown lots of photos etc of what can go wrong so they can make an informed decision.

How can you give informed consent if there is such limited follow up data on complications?

I can give you a list of reasons why my sibling can not have made an informed decision.

Its fucking frightening.

Who picks up the pieces of those who sold their snake oil and encouraged vulnerable people to go through this?

Personally I don't support any extreme forms of body modification, whether it's attempting to mock up a superficial mock-up of a vagina or done for non-trans reasons. Just because we can do something does not mean we should.

we would be much better off investing the money in helping people to be able to detach their identity from their body and thereby live a life where they are true to themselves (albeit always the sex they're born because that can't change). Reinforcing the idea that the presence of absence of an appendage in your pants defines your personality is helping no-one.

I agree but it's not that simple because then you have the 'no penises in women's changerooms' argument - which is also completely valid. If trans doesn't end up being a trend that burns itself out, there will have to be some real investment in safe third or neutral spaces.

Hair in vagina! What have I just read?

If you have the money you pay for laser hair removal pre op by hair removal is not part of the NHS package as far as I know.

What happens if they let it close? What is inside? There must be some kind of lining- it can't just be an open wound into their insides? Could they just get the "lining" taken out and let it heal ? But then how do they urinate? So many questions

I believe they do something to invert the penis and make it a neo-vagina. I guess the skin of the penis acts as a lining (although I understand sometimes colon tissue is used).

There is an issue when it comes to performing surgeries on trans people who have been on puberty blockers, as they do not have adult-sized genitalia and so there is not enough 'raw' material to invert. This is something that affected both Jackie Green, Susie Green's daughter and Jazz Jennings (reality show star).

Detransitioner Ritchie Herron has written movingly about the problems he suffered following his surgery.

PoochPalace · 16/01/2023 21:58

I cannot believe what I’ve just read and that this is sold as a viable surgical procedure? Sounds utterly barbaric for those patients. How could it meet any surgical standards given the aftercare required and side effects. As others have said, sounds like a malpractice timebomb.

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 21:43

Isn't testorone a male hormone???

No, women and men both have testosterone but in different quantities. T creates some of the secondary sex characteristics associated with being male - beard growth, larger clitoris, deeper voice...

The effects of women taking testosterone are irreversible, as are mastectomies.

Doctors do not properly inform their patients of the full implications of all of these interventions. It's medical malpractice.

Hopefully surgical methods will improve and there are other treatments or drugs that can lead to better outcomes for these Women

Women?
I’m astonished that anyone can believe the narrative that surgery can replicate the opposite sex organs.

Hopefully very soon we will stop telling people they can change sex.

MrsPutnamNaomiDarling · 16/01/2023 21:42

This must be why a lot of trans women keep their penises, surely?

Yes, but also cross-dressing (counted a 'trans' by Stonewall) is a sexual fetish and they like their penises.

IcakethereforeIam · 16/01/2023 22:00

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 21:50

Don't you mean outside the vagina? Like pubic hair. Men's hair grows around their penis etc

If you're talking about the creation of a 'peen-ish' for transmen. The surgeon flays skin and muscle from the patient's forearm or thigh to use to create the fake organ. I assume some of the skin is used to line the inside to extend the urethra. The hair might be existing body hair but excess testosterone can make a woman's body hairier. I suspect that may contribute to the problem even if the skin affected has been transplanted.

These surgeries are bad enough for men, they're appalling for boys and horrific for girls.

mangoontoast · 16/01/2023 21:54

Women don't urinate through their vaginas.

Well, obviously. But I'm trying to picture what on earth is created on a man and where their urethra ends up. You know, given that they dont have labia. So what is at risk of healing up exactly

IneedanewTV · 16/01/2023 22:01

Anyone who has been following this over the last couple of years knows about this. A penis is “made” from skin and muscle on the arms. A “vagina” is an inverted penis/colon which is why hair ends up inside. Erections are pumped up. Look up glimmer. Look on the feminist forum. It’s horrific.

fruitbrewhaha · 16/01/2023 22:02

Hopesakiller · 16/01/2023 21:18

Seems like an expectation Vs reality situation. They want a porn stars vagina and end up with a surgically created orifice that behaves in some ways similar to your average woman's vagina. As a born female I have at times experienced many of the complaints on that list

No, they do not end up with anything resembling a real vagina.

If you’re experiencing anything from that list you should see your gp.

Potentially, in some countries such as Canada, trying to deter a child who is claiming to be trans would be called conversion therapy. You could be fined, even jailed and you might lose custody of your child. This type of legislation is being pushed for in Scotland.

This bears emphasis.

Xiaoxiong · 16/01/2023 22:03

@Ihatedonuts if they want to have children later they can't (if they've had the euphemistically named "bottom surgery"). These surgeries result in sterilisation if gonads are removed - it's permanent.

I don't think it's possible at a young age to make informed consent to sterilisation. It's completely unethical in my opinion to irreversibly sterilise a healthy human, male or female, until they are older and have more life experience. And even with that safeguard, look how many men try and get vasectomies reversed - showing that people do change their minds!

This is a computer-generated animation that shows the surgical process.

This must be why a lot of trans women keep their penises, surely?

A lot (considering Stonewall’s expansion of the trans umbrella to include fetishists) retain their penis because they still use it.

Autogynephilia (AGP) is a fetish where the man is turned on by seeing himself as a woman, being validated as a woman, and for many being humiliated. It’s estimated that these men make up the biggest proportion of TW, and their presence on SM and giveaway male tendencies give it away, even if it sometimes takes a while to clock onto it.

EdgeOfACoin · 16/01/2023 22:05

The practice of creating a neo-vagina from a penis is a very brutal, experimental form of surgery. (Choosing words carefully to try to avoid a deletion).

However, the practice of trying to create a neo-penis for a person born female is even more experimental and brutal. Grafts must be taken from the forearm to create such an appendage.

Fortunately, it is very rare for female-to-male transitioner to undergo such surgery.

If you think I am exaggerating, there are plenty of YouTube videos of ftm transitioners detailing their experiences.

A binder?

OP posts:
FOJN · 16/01/2023 22:08

I'm not sure how "top" surgery works in the UK but you have to pay extra to have nipples grafted back on after a mastectomy in the US so many young females chose not to and end up with a nipple free "masculanised chest". Even if the nipples are preserved they may not "take" and have to be removed and in some cases I've read about they just fall off. Google yeet the teet for the full horror of one surgeon who specialises in this surgery.

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 22:07

A binder?

Flattens the breasts.

Please someone correct me if I’m wrong, but binders cause problems (from pain, breathing difficulties, to permanent breast damage) in 93% of those who wear them.

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 22:09

I saw a Tesco blue token fundraiser for them. That's ok?

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 21:51

How can a mastectomy be reversible? Dot hey still keep nipples and get implants?

I believe, at least in the state where this has to be paid for, some of the girls having elective mastectomy opt to have their nipples removed. Sometimes because it's cheaper, sometimes for ideological reasons (it triggers dysphoria or something) and sometimes they ( and I can't believe I'm typing this) they fall off because they don't heal correctly when they're repositioned. I think a facsimile can be tattooed on instead.

Ihatedonuts · 16/01/2023 22:07

A binder?

To bind down the breasts to make the wearer look flat chested. In many cases it damages and deforms the breast tissue.

Some compare it to a sports bra, but this is a gross understatement.
