Excellent news.

Hold onto your hats everyone; incoming furious TRA's looking to report anything and everything they can get away with.

greeboclovis · 16/01/2023 18:51

Hopefully the discussions will expose the fact that while the SNP were arguing in Holyrood that the GRC is a minor admin change & doesn’t affect anything, that they were simultaneously (successfully) arguing in Court of Sessions that GRC fundamentally changes someone’s sex & therefore a bio male is female in all respect for purposes of EA2010 - making single sex exemptions & affirmative action initiatives meaningless. I also note that maternity/pregnancy protection is written as applying only to females so wonder if TIF are going to be less protected with a GRC against discrimination?

ProudToBeANorthener · 16/01/2023 18:52

Hallelujah, if the government is serious , perhaps they’d like to open the debate to the floor ……….

HootyMcboob76 · 16/01/2023 18:53

Oh and BTW, THANK God someone still apparently knows what a woman is and hasn't lost their marbles.

Plbrookes · 16/01/2023 18:53

SueVineer · 16/01/2023 18:38

Roughly four women a week are killed in the uk. That’s actual women not trans identified men. Misogyny is a huge problem and the attitude to this whole debate from so much of the mainstream media shows very plainly how much our society still hates and demeans women.

Yeah, it's the link between your first sentence and your third one you need to justify.

Oblomov22 · 16/01/2023 18:54

NS has her own agenda. Can't believe this Scottish crap might cause damage in UK ie to encourage anyone in uk to follow suit abc try and get this shit passed in the uk.

Datun · 16/01/2023 18:55

I'd like to know what kind of conversations were happening behind closed doors, too.

"Do you think if we block this bill, we will get support?"

The answer had to be hell yes. As an unprecedented move, and with the risk that it might be a political misstep in terms of independence, the answer was still, hell yes.

It looks like the government is wising up, fairly swiftly, to how unpopular the entire trans ideology is.

LaughingPriest · 16/01/2023 18:56

Marg literally doesn't know whether trans women are female or not, so the sex of skeletons is unlikely to enlighten poor old Margy very much...

LexMitior · 16/01/2023 18:56

The SNP are unhinged. But tells you how far they will go in pursuit of Westminster bad.

If it were not this, then it would be something else. Nationalism enables all sorts of nutty thinking, the SNP are not exempt from its basic disease which is that they are the true believers and what they think must be true. I suppose that's why this very extreme idea of self ID, at such a young age, appeals to them. It is magical thinking.

Lockheart · 16/01/2023 18:56

I am pleased to see this, although I strongly suspect it has far more to do with logistics and the difficulties of having two separate systems within the UK than any alignment with gender critical views.

I am concerned about what it means for the long term viability of the union.

MintJulia · 16/01/2023 19:00

Thank goodness for that. Common sense prevails.

Swissmountains · 16/01/2023 19:01

What is actually wonderful new is the light and sunshine this is going to flood over the subject. It will be headlined for months, if not years, assuming NS will actually try and defend this nonsense - and if she does, she will be doing us - and the rest of the world - the greatest favour of all.

It will bring the loss of women's rights and identity onto the stage, the discussion, investigative journalism that will follow will show just how bloody dangerous this is. For so long we have been silenced on this subject, but now oxygen, conversation and debate will flow into the public consciousness. Normal people will understand why people are fighting so hard to be heard, to remain protected by the recognition of our sex - and for some our vulnerability.

This the very best thing that could have happened. On every talk show, in every paper and in every office and school we will be talking about this - and believe me the support will rocket.

This is something everyone should be talking about - it affects 51% of the entire population. Even Starmer is rowing back furiously.

Thank you to those on here especially that spread the sunshine and the light.

While I agree with the sentiment, Scotland is part of the UK

BlackRookInRainyWeather · 16/01/2023 19:03

This is the best thing I have seen on the news ever. I am so relieved that all the books we have funded; emails sent; letters sent; campaigns funded; petitions signed … are having an effect. Still a long way to go but it’s a start.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2023 19:03

@MargaritaPie next aim is to abolish the GRA and strengthen sex based rights in the equality act

Perhaps I'm too cynical, but I think you're giving the government too much credit. I really think this is much more about saving money and legal hassle than it is about listening to women.

tresleches · 16/01/2023 19:07

Very glad to see this, while being worried about the repercussions in how SNP/Scottish Govt spins the narrative around it

I'd like to see Sunak etc make a really substantial argument about their decision (not just single sex spaces but taking on the whole thing: biology before "identity"; the huge difference between autistic teenage girls vs the middle aged males transitioning and leading the campaigning - why one policy? Why discuss as a single "trans" issue? Needs far more research; full investigation of Tavistock published and analysed before any major policy changes etc etc). Basically take this opportunity to blow it all apart, please.

tobee · 16/01/2023 19:09

🥳🎊🎉

ArabellaScott · 16/01/2023 19:16

The weakness in the Scotgov is one of the things we've been railing about for years.

They don't listen. They've dismissed women and our concerns. They've tried to use a 'consultation' to 'persuade' people to agree. They managed to hobble the SNP and suppress internal dissent quite successfully, but there does come a time when your censorious and manipulative exertions work against you.

This is what happens when you try to force batshit bad law on an unwilling populace. We've seen it again and again - all the people who work so hard to convince themselves they're on the Right Side of History failed to listen, and so fall when they come up against reality.

Most people know that you can't change sex.
Most people don't want women and children exposed to more risk.
Most people don't support self ID.

That covers all ages and all demographics within Scotland.

Justsurfing · 16/01/2023 19:16

fantastic news 😁

"the Scottish government is likely to mount a legal challenge in response."

There's still a chance...

Anyway it would appear most gender-criticals are the older generation. Not to worry, just give it another couple of decades and you will find most of society will be LGBT+ supportive.

Even if it doesn't pass this time, it will in the not-too-distant future :)

Yes, when we're all dead you can do whatever you want darling.

And the best of British luck with it.

titchy · 16/01/2023 17:56

Well that was the plan...

Wonder if the TRA's knew NS was using them as a pawn in her power game with Westminster?

Totally agree.

Shiraztonight · 16/01/2023 19:19

Great news, delighted
