Woman mistaken for a man and challenged

Okay, so I'd like some good old reasoning on this as I appreciate a lot of you are more insightful than me!

I believe men have 0 place in women's toilets, changing families or women only spaces.

But this tripped me up... what do I say to this? It popped up on twitter and I don't know what to argument would be

This woman was questioned because she looks too masculine. But she is indeed a biological woman through and through

www.itv.com/news/central/2022-12-26/cancer-survivor-challenged-at-public-toilets-after-being-mistaken-for-a-man

What is the answer? I just don't know

Taylor isn’t a male name? It’s unisex, but predominantly female
www.famousbirthdays.com/names/taylor.html

The masculine presentation isn’t intended, they’re a butch lesbian.

I read the article, It clearly says Taylor is her surname.

I still doubt it though. Just like I doubted the Twitter video that showed doctors in Wuhan going round with guns and shooting covid patients. Twitter is notorious for fake news including doctored photos and videos. 🤷‍♀️

Same here. But some Twitter poster has put up a photo showing a clear name badge…which may or may not be doctored..as there is no source for it.

MeJane · 29/12/2022 23:29

The badge situation is very confusing. I thought the NHS did the whole 'hello my name is' introduction as standard. Why would they have their surname on a badge like a kid in the upper third at Eton?

I have looked to see that photo elsewhere, it seems to have come from the article - which doesn't show any pronouns as they seem to have been blurred out
So goodness knows where they have come from in that tweet 😕 doesn't seem very reliable when can't see it mentioned anywhere else

Exactly, it’s like someone lifted the photo from the article and then did a bit of photoshopping to doctor it.

Again, Taylor is her surname. It clearly says so in the article.
Tiffany Liles - Taylor.

Have they? If they had and Tiffany were their dead name, then why is it used repeatedly throughout an article published 3 days ago and also is their name on their Facebook page?

But, this is happening in public toilets per the article, not hospital toilets at work. Why would Tiffany be wearing a name badge of any kind when off work and using a public toilet??

RunLolaRun102 · 29/12/2022 23:41

I only know one woman who looks so masculine you would think she’s male at first glance. She’s a 60 year old body builder with short hair and doesn’t mind being challenged when in female spaces. Real women don’t mind. It’s only men masquerading as women who don’t understand.

I agree. This NHS website shows a different design for NHS badges…
www.england.nhs.uk/nhsidentity/examples/nhs-staff-identification-badge/

So what is going on here?

waterwitch · 29/12/2022 23:43

In the end, which is worse - Katie Dolatowski attacks a child in a public toilet, or a female Katie Dolatowski look-alike (I know!) gets asked if she’s in the correct space?
Safeguarding often comes with having to ask some very direct questions. As pp’s have said repeatedly, if males kept out of women’s single-sex spaces, this wouldn't be a problem - that’s where the real issue lies

Somebody on this very thread has said that they would mind, and people laughingly call her things like Sir.
Or does that not matter?

I don't think women here approve of anyone getting harassed. But if male people insist on forcing their way into female only spaces (which is harassing) and have no regard for the impact, fear, distress, lack of privacy and dignity and exclusion that they cause by doing so? In the belief that their desire to be in that space is more important than the impact they have on others?

They can hardly be surprised that female people have begun to get defensive and suspicious about who is who in their spaces. To view this as bad behaviour is rather like criticising someone for asking you to stop stamping on their foot.

They quite clearly do approve!

Onnabugeisha · 29/12/2022 23:49

They even implied in the article that having a mastectomy was great

Well, it saved her life! But what she said in the article was “these can go”
Which is so far off “this is great” it’s not even coincidental.

”In the first week of July, she had an appointment with the doctor, but it was during a time when appointments were more or less ‘non-existent’ because of coronavirus.

She had other strange symptoms such as wheezing and shoulder pain, but those were initially put down to asthma and working out in the gym.

"When I went for my first appointment, due to the size of my breasts, the GP couldn’t determine whether I had a cyst or something cancerous, so I was referred to Glenfield Hospital two weeks later," she said.

Tiffany had a mammogram and said that she knew she was in trouble when the doctor asked: "How many lumps did you come in with?"

Tiffany said: “I replied with ‘one lump', and she then proceeded to tell me that I had a sizable lump in my right breast, but I also had one in my left."

The doctor did an ultrasound which revealed that the cancer had also spread to her lymph nodes. Further tests revealed that she had three tumours and 13 out of 23 of her lymph nodes were compromised.

She said: “I asked the doctor if It was treatable, or if I was terminal, and she said I had curative-intent, which meant that if I reacted well to the treatment, I had high odds of surviving.

"Once I'd processed the news I realised that I could get both breasts removed. I’ve had to carry around these really heavy things my whole life, but I was in my forties and they were starting to get droopy anyway - so I thought 'these can go'."

Gender nonconforming women & children are viewed as cannon fodder. I had a thread begging MN to at least leave children out of this whole toilet challenge trend, as in properly pre-teen children but to no avail. Apparently even a young ‘tomboy’ girl should be raised to handle being confronted by an angry adult in the toilets. 🤨

I tend to think gender conforming women do not care because it’s not something they’d ever have to experience. So the voices of gender nonconforming women, especially butch lesbians, are simply disregarded and minimised.

midgetastic · 29/12/2022 21:38

If people felt safe and secure then they would not challenge anyone. That's why it never used to happen

But when you frighten people by invading their territory, they will fight back and if that means a women being challenged that's what will happen more and more

Most women would understand that and would laugh it off

It's not a gender thing you see it's a sex thing but when you muddle them and pretend they are the same people get confused and scared

This. ^ I couldn’t have put it better.

😁 not conforming to stereotypes is something that is very clearly accepted on this board. It’s GII that suggests if you don’t conform to stereotypes then there must be something wrong which needs fixing. Trans ideology, and indeed non-binary relies on gender stereotypes Onnabugeisha

But it’s not accepted IRL.

Policing toilets relies heavily on gender stereotypes.

The “other people do it too” doesn’t really carry weight with me. If it’s wrong for them (TRAs), it’s also wrong for everyone else to rely on gender stereotypes.
