Belatedly - we've not had an FWR women of the year thread this year.

There are so many worthy of mention! I'm not planning on doing a spreadsheet to decide a 'winner' but if anyone else wants to please do.

So, to get the ball rolling with some obvious names...

Joanne Rowling - I think someone reckoned she's due a lifetime award but I'm pretty sure she's going to be doing more for women each year so that's premature.Grin

Maya Forstater and Allison Bailey for their important legal battles.

Special MNer's award to @IamSarah for her bravery and persistence.

I second all these nominations! All the regulars on FWR are brilliant (well... not all the regulars :) I've learned so much from all of you.

To be fair though Beastly it wouldn't be the same without them, they do weirdly add a certain...something to the mix. Plus you have to admit, they are bloody dedicated to their cause, their cause being obviously that they just like winding us up.

But they do help show the on the fence readers the complete bat shittery of the other side.

Maybe we should give them a special award...oh my bad we can't, they're all men.

Obviously I'm only joking, I'm convinced one of them actually is a woman, the rest...who knows.

beastlyslumber · 27/12/2022 21:40

They do add a certain je ne sais qua... Could live without it, though Xmas Grin

Boiledbeetle · 27/12/2022 21:42

God, some days most certainly. On those days the "Oh! will you just FUCK OFF!" Literally screams at me to write it as a post.

Needmoresleep · 27/12/2022 21:49

Lots of brilliant women.

Could we also give an honourable mention to Caroline ffiske and her colleagues at Conservatives for Women. www.conservativesforwomen.org/

I don’t know if similar lobby groups exist within other parties, but there has been some much needed progress within the Tories in the Commons, Lords and within local constituency parties since the group was formed in 2019. No elected representative should be able to claim they are unaware of women’s views and concerns.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2022 21:57

I don't know about lobby groups in the other parties but Rosie Duffield deserves mention too.

JulesJules · 27/12/2022 22:56

And Sarah Phillimore

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2022 23:07

Yes, @spero

Of course, quite a lot of these names have come up in previous years - persistent, indomitable women that they are.

Also rogdmum

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/12/2022 23:12

It's quite something to see all these brilliant persistent women and groups name checked like this - so much thought, hard work and effort. Flowers

Nightmare2022 · 28/12/2022 08:23

Stephanie Davies-Arai

One of the people fighting for our gender non-conforming girls (because, if you look at the stats, ROGD largely affects girls) not to be labelled ‘born in the wrong bodies’, taught they must take hormones for the rest of their lives and get their breast chopped off.

IamSarah · 28/12/2022 09:08

Stephanie Davies-Arai is a legend, as is Helen Saxby. Both incredible women's and girls rights campaigners and deserving of an award.

FemaleAndLearning · 28/12/2022 09:14

There are so many women to choose from.
Kelly Jay Keen sticks out for me and her words 'if not you then who, if not now then when'. We can't sit still any longer and she has inspired me to be more outspoken.

Along with all the amazing women mentioned above I wanted to mention the grassroots women each for doing their little bit with stickers, emails and one on one conversations to help those not interested to be interested.

Miriam Cates and Dr Hilary Cass would get my vote with regards to children.

The amazing @IamSarah who despite her own trauma has took on an amazing battle.

Thank you to women everywhere for making me feel sane and helping me to continue the fight in my own small ways.

RoyalCorgi · 28/12/2022 09:45

There are so many brilliant, wonderful women. I think if I had just one vote it would go to Allison Bailey for her sheer persistence and bravery. Allison is a survivor of child sexual abuse and, as a black lesbian from a working-class background, overcame so many obstacles to become a barrister. She then had to take the decision to fight a gruelling court case against her own chambers that must have been exhausting and even soul-destroying at times. She really deserves our thanks and our appreciation.

TanteRose · 28/12/2022 09:47

Elaine Miller <waves> <clenches pelvic floor>

Boiledbeetle · 28/12/2022 18:01

After some of the laughs I've had on posts and threads to do with merkinsb over the last couple of days I'll agree with @TanteRose . I've been doing a lot of clenching, not always successfully mind!

Too much information?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/12/2022 16:01

@IamSarah
@spero
@TinselAngel

Amazing Mumsnetters who have all done women an invaluable service.

The women of FWR - the one space where these discussions are even possible. So much collective knowledge and strength here.

Joanna Cherry
Rosie Duffield
Suzanne Moore
Allison Bailey
Kiera Bell
Nor forgetting J K Rowling

And here's to WPUK and the WRN.

💚🤍💜

EvilBee · 29/12/2022 21:53

Katy Montgomerie for keeping on going despite the hate, death threats etc

ArabellaScott · 29/12/2022 21:54

Winston Churchill.

IcakethereforeIam · 29/12/2022 21:55

It's 'woman' of the year, but no-one should receive death threats. I wish Katie the best for the new year.

Blister · 30/12/2022 08:46

Tried to find the death threats... couldn't... I'm certain what sex the perpetrators would be though. anyway back to the women of the year.

NotBadConsidering · 30/12/2022 08:59

What do you think this is, the BBC?

Monty! What a top geeze! Deffo deserves a hearty slap on the back and a beer for all those acerbic, perceptive stickman cartoons. Truly a modern Hogarth! 😂
