This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

Exactly @Helleofabore

CyanCyan · 06/12/2022 22:23

It’s OnlyFans and webcams as well now. ProstitutionLite. It’s as if it’s an entitlement. The whole thing disgusts me and to be honest I struggle to imagine being in another relationship.

WomaninBoots · 06/12/2022 21:19

No. Not complex.

Have you ever known any sex workers of any stripe?

Of course there is abuse, but there are also women who can earn far more than you and I in a safe environment through choice

It is complicated

ArabellaScott · 06/12/2022 22:27

How dare you?

HatThatWearsYou · 06/12/2022 22:28

And these young women seem frequently unaware of the very real immediate dangers and pitfalls of doing webcam or only fans.

Not only the chances of it throwing a grenade into your life (I saw a recent case where a teacher in the news who's only fans was found by her teenage students and passed around the school), but the danger to your person as well. I bet a lot of these women wouldn't be that hard to track down IRL if the men are tech savvy and determined which is really scary to think about.

ArabellaScott · 06/12/2022 22:29

Patronising, dismissive, dick-centring bullshit. How fucking dare you.

Helleofabore · 06/12/2022 22:30

Do you realise that women’s bodies being exploited for money is not complicated at all?

It doesn’t matter how much money they are making. It is financial coercion!!!

I suspect the number of ‘happy hookers’ are miniscule compared to what you imagine it is.

Coercion is coercion. It doesn’t matter if it is big bucks or small bucks. Or any other fucking power source.

No it's not complicated at all, no women who is a prostitute is ever really safe. You are disgusting.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 06/12/2022 22:30

Rather than typing on a feminist board, making excuses for sex buyers and hoping that users here will grant you absolution, I suggest you do something to atone instead. Put Rachel Moran's powerful comment into practice. There are a number of projects and charities that help women to exit prostitution, and/or provide support services to women in prostitution. I've spent £100 this week on purchasing required items for my local service, and I've never even considered paying a woman to serve me sexually.

Yours,

The Neighbour Watch

HatThatWearsYou · 06/12/2022 21:29

I'm just.... I can't really say without probably getting a ban or deletion but I can't get round you being so blaze about renting a human being twice with the intention of using their non-enjoying-the-sex bodies (used in place of preferred term to avoid deletion), and now you are handwaving the prostitution of young women because they need money to help educate themselves as being ok, if not aspirational? "earning a lot more money than they could otherwise"

Completely ignoring the mental, physical and social issues surrounding what prostitutes go through not to mention as a PP mentioned just exactly which demographic of women tend to end up in prostitution?

The happy hooker myth is strong in this one.

You worded that well HatThatWearsYou.

Un-fucking-believable how you come onto a Feminist Board @TassLeHoff with your dismissive, blase attitude towards prostitution and then compound it by mansplaining to us what it's all about.

And you have the gall to think you are one of the 'good' guys.

You think prostitution is empowering sex work? Why don't you have a go at it?

HatThatWearsYou · 06/12/2022 22:30

Yet another goady fucking man, here to rile up the feminists I think.

TassLeHoff · 06/12/2022 22:31

ExiledElsie · 06/12/2022 21:55

It depends, of course, when I went to do the website for "Les Girls" in Soho it was mainly young women helping with their degree or earning a lot more money than they could otherwise (and with a plan)

I feel sick reading this. Women do not have sex for money if they have supportive families, have never been abused, have good self-esteem and good opportunities in life.

Why would anyone have sex with some revolting bloke who thinks payment is consent? Who doesn't realise that you don't want them to want the girlfriend experience because pretending to like someone is the worse thing mentally.

Did you know Tass, that many prostitutes have false front teeth? Because they get knocked out by their pimps.

And it's being pushed to young women as a positive fucking choice.

I've never advocated for that nor excused it

I just happened to know women who chose a means to earn money, whilst being in control of their environment

I also knew a heroin addict who died from an overdose after getting into prostitution, she was one of my best friends

So, it depends

WomaninBoots · 06/12/2022 22:31

It's not complicated, Hoff, duckie.

You're just trying to justify being a misogynist and square it with how you want to be seen as a Good Guy.

Helleofabore · 06/12/2022 22:31

And yes. I have known women who are prostitutes.

You obviously believe that sex work is work to continue to call it ‘sex work’.

I really don't care what you think, to be honest

Yes, and of course the risk of it being recorded and circulated. I do know someone who did this kind of work and she said a lot of it was about humiliation, along the lines of being asked to do increasingly ridiculous and degrading things.

WomaninBoots · 06/12/2022 22:33

TassLeHoff · 06/12/2022 22:32

Excellent come back mate. 👏

Helleofabore · 06/12/2022 22:33

So, it depends

No. It doesn’t depend.

Did your mates love having strangers dicks shoved inside them? Did they have the education, the opportunity and the self esteem to find other work?

Fuck!!

BlackRookInRainyWeather · 06/12/2022 22:36

I also suspect that many people who do this kind of work probably do tell others that it’s fine, because, well, nobody wants to admit how shit everything really might be. And it’s that whole idea of selling a skill or a talent. Women lie to men. To please them or to tell them what they think they want to hear.

HatThatWearsYou · 06/12/2022 22:36

TassLeHoff · 06/12/2022 22:32

Funnily enough we don't give a shiny shite what you think either, you've proven yourself a giant misogynist so.... don't let the door hit you on the arse.

I also don't think it matters, nor should we have to justify our close relations or not with anyone who is in prostitution.

As women we are supremely qualified to judge the harms done by prostitution and the men who use prostitutes. We see it all the time. You have demonstrated it here tonight by calling it sex work and touting it as safe and aspirational.

TassLeHoff · 06/12/2022 22:36

VestofAbsurdity · 06/12/2022 22:33

It's not about view or opinions, but knowing the motivation or coercion and protection (or not) of sex workers

I just happened to know a few as friends when I was squatting in South London many years ago

HatThatWearsYou · 06/12/2022 22:39

CyanCyan · 06/12/2022 22:33

Yes the degradation and humiliation aspect was another thing I was thinking in terms of how it's not even so straight forward awful as just having someone stick their appendage in you.

The mental toll it takes on a person is a massive part of the damage prostitution, cam or only fans do.

ArabellaScott · 06/12/2022 22:39

File under: Men Who Know Women Better Than They Know Themselves.

Helleofabore · 06/12/2022 22:40

You knew them while you were ‘squatting’ ?

So tell us. These women, they had loving families, and were educated enough to get well paying jobs, no drug dependencies, they had accommodation that was safe and clean and they had all the options that women should have?

Oh. And they just loved sex with strangers for money and kicks?
