This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

It's a Looking-glass world, Kuc. Bonkers.

Winterborne74 · 12/12/2022 18:56

And this is how it is framed by trans activists for truly looking glass stuff:

@duc748 this is a pretty comprehensive article on the Rape Crisis centre

I can't believe that the CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, is a Transwomen.

You might find this older thread interesting....and even more enlightening duc:

From that article…

The leaflets make claims such as: “Services which you may wish to be performed by a woman… could be delivered by a ‘woman’ who is actually male.” One of the four such services they list is rape counselling. (When approached by openDemocracy for comment, the group posted a sarcastic public blog in response, implying that our questioning was a ‘witch hunt’.)

“I find this misinformation painful to read,” said Mridul Wadhwa. “I see it as the erasure of my womanhood, denying my existence, my privacy and my ability to contribute to society.

The complete absence of self-awareness or recognition of irony and hypocrisy in this quote is astonishing. It’s all about them isn’t it. Barging into women’s services and playing the victim when women challenge them again. What’s this tactic called again? Oh yes, DARVO. One of the many tools in the male abuser’s toolkit.

duc748 · 12/12/2022 19:12

Thanks both, I'll have a look later. Obviously threats and hate mail are bad whoever they're directed at, and the Twitterverse is full of free-range nutters. And doxing people is not a good idea. But still, the thrust of that Open Democracy piece is 'women wanting their own spaces = bigots'.

Look, I'm trying to watch the pool on the telly! 😜

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/12/2022 19:57

The same male person, IIRC, who had a massive strop when the law clarified that female survivors were entitled to female (rather than lady) medical examiners after they were raped.

Who stropped out of the SNP when most of its MSPs voted for this amendment.

duc748 · 12/12/2022 20:39

@CyanCyan

I read the Herald piece. Remarkably dishonest arguing by that person. As you say, all about them. These women don't need a wagging finger.

😂in that case, I'm terribly sorry!

@DameMaud

A sense of proportion is always important! 😁

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/12/2022 23:39

The Jan Morris story also made me think of the Old Place. A poster there said several things along the lines of: 'I bet you wouldn't tell Jan Morris she wasn't a woman'.

I never commented because I wasn't sure what the point of that line of argument was, and I had only a vague idea of who JM was.

I wonder if he's still as keen on holding up that particular paragon of womanhood as an example?

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 13/12/2022 06:08

Talking of Jan Morris (who sounds appalling) this is an interesting blast from the past:

SqueakyDinosaur · 13/12/2022 09:16

I was thinking a couple of days ago (no, really, it doesn't happen often...) about the scene in Grey's Anatomy where the women of the hospital line the corridor to protect/honour a rape victim on her way to surgery, barring the area to all men. You couldn't make that scene now, could you?

Dotellhimpike · 13/12/2022 09:21

Not without including trans identifying men prominently at the front of the line, and having the victim aknowledge and thank them for their kindness.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/12/2022 11:19

I'm looking for an old thread that had cartoons in it and one included a strip where a young girl was the main protagonist. We saw her confronting sparkly gender ideology and having to choose between that and despised womanhood.

Does anyone know the thread or the cartoonist?

NecessaryScene · 13/12/2022 11:24

One of these, perhaps?

Tatsuya Ishida, Sinfest. I'm sure he has others on the same theme from other dates.

Thank you. It must have been that but I remember it in colour!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 13/12/2022 12:17

Did anyone else who uses Twitter notice one of the paid promotion Tweets ('things you don't know about Japan' or some such) featuring an upskirt photograph of a young woman/girl in school uniform and white underpants?
It was there for a few days, not sure whether it's still up or not. It seemed very creepy on mainstream feeds.

That is a brilliant piece by Nora Ephron and encapsulates perfectly the things I feel about the performative nature of being trans for many as far as I can see.

Winterborne74 · 13/12/2022 13:45

Yep - btw, has everyone seen this? Even if Public Boards in Scotland are made up of 100% male people, that's OK as long as some of them identify as women..

www.thenational.scot/news/23188087.women-scotland-lose-legal-case-definition-woman/

Reminds me of my favourite bit of nonsense on representation from Jo Swinson

Actually, Swinson has personal experience of the strange distortions of gender identity applied to sex inequality. Writing in Equal Power about her time working at Viking FM in the 2000s and how male-dominated radio is, she says: “In fact the gender balance was slightly better than we knew at the time, as our anchor breakfast presenter was Stephanie Hirst, at the time known as Simon.”
