Talking about why she left the Guardian!

I liked Emma's interview style. Asking whether Kath Viner should still be in post worked well because Hadley had been able to clarify that in her early days at The Guardian, she'd been able to write about virtually anything. Listeners could then join the dots for themselves as to why that changed.

That's a good point. Didn't the advertising slogan used to be 'free thinkers welcome'

'Free thinkers cancelled' is more apt now.

loislovesstewie · 05/12/2022 11:48

I think that the Guardian used to invite people to see the whole picture. It's not happening now.

dropthevipers · 05/12/2022 11:56

Ground has been a bin fire for years, hard to see a way back for it now.

dropthevipers · 05/12/2022 11:57

Graun!

WarriorN · 05/12/2022 12:00

Worried they'll pull it...

Nah, always takes ages.

nauticant · 05/12/2022 12:02

For anyone waiting to hear the WH interview, there's this interview of HF yesterday on Times Radio:

www.thetimes.co.uk/radio/show/20221204-12809/2022-12-04

Go to 53 minutes for where HF starts.

nauticant · 05/12/2022 12:08

Although I will add that the fireworks are in the WH interview rather than in the much shorter Times Radio one.

WarriorN · 05/12/2022 12:09

@DameMaud I could listen again as the programme was still live on air. I was listening on my phone as missed the start - I could rewind it at 10:59 and listen again.

At 11:00 it's impossible for an hour or so (I have to do this a lot!)

WarriorN · 05/12/2022 12:10

I often now listen on my phone (thru radio) so I can rewind anything I need to listen more carefully to

An archetype of the trans activist response:

I don't think he's getting quite the response he anticipated: archive.ph/XCJKT

Ramblingnamechanger · 05/12/2022 12:37

Apparently according to to EB there were loads of responses…I assumed at least one would be read , but no. Why not?!

Abitofalark · 05/12/2022 12:37

Devastating there from fast talking journalist exposing all that the Guardian did to stop her and indeed women, from writing about important issues of our time particularly for women and girls. I had no idea Hadley Freeman was so sharp and deadly. Huge cheers for the bull's eye, Hadley: The BBC and Woman's Hour. What went on at the Guardian with their special staff and lobby groups is strikingly similar to the BBC. Emma Barnett is no Jenni Murray and her weak protestations about interviewing a few women rely on thin stuff indeed. Did Woman's Hour cover Cass and its immense significance while it was being discussed and having repercussions elsewhere? I waited in vain for that while she spent months of the programme prioritising party politics and dramas, following the BBC agenda rather than women's interests. Laughable that she mentions BBC presenters not being allowed to have opinions.

Maybe there are so many they'll have a segment in a later show, I think WH sometimes does that.

Thanks @WarriorN and @nauticant .
It's still not up on BBC sounds.
Will fill in the impatience with the times one.
God, I got a surge if adrenaline with this! Xx

That's a familiar trick on Woman's Hour. When she said it, I thought to myself I bet she won't read any out.

JoyousAsOtters · 05/12/2022 12:41

That was a great interview - she got so many points in. You can tell what a fantastic job she’s done looking into all this, and then to be told repeatedly she can’t write about it in the newspaper she’s always known and believed in … it just confirms so much. I am relieved to hear there have been journalists like Hadley (and there’s a couple of others still there that I look out for) who tried and tried again to have the Guardian publish this. And the others who were forced out like Suzanne Moore of course.

Thank you so much Hadley. Keep going. It’s working.

TheBiologyStupid · 05/12/2022 12:43

Still not available on Sounds - I don't remember it usually taking this long?!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/12/2022 12:45

Hadley went in all guns blazing from the start! Impressive!!

I love sunlight. And brave women.

CaveMum · 05/12/2022 12:47

I’m still waiting on Sounds to be updated too!

pinchpoint · 05/12/2022 12:47

Wow. Hadley pulled no punches at all there. Barnett didn't give her an easy ride. The Guardian should be ashamed of censoring women journalists like that.

DameMaud · 05/12/2022 12:48

CaveMum · 05/12/2022 12:47

Yes! It def is taking longer than normal. I'll be soooo annoyed if they do pull it/edit it

DameHelena · 05/12/2022 12:50

nauticant · 05/12/2022 10:12

HF saying that a very senior Guardian bod said, explicitly: You are not allowed to write about gender. I do not want women to be writing about gender.

This was in front of witnesses.

Except of course women CAN write about gender when it's, say, Zoe Williams trying to trip up Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

DameMaud · 05/12/2022 12:51

It's up!

CaveMum · 05/12/2022 12:56

DameMaud · 05/12/2022 12:51

It's up!

Huzzah! I knew that would happen, the universe always likes to make me look incompetent by doing stuff like that just after I’ve commented on it 🤣
