Scottish Women's Rights Centre is part of Just Right Scotland. 'The SWRC is an innovative collaborative project which brings together the expertise of JustRight Scotland with Rape Crisis Scotland and the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic.'

I see Pam Duncan-Glancy used to work for 'Engender'.

It's an awfully small world, isn't it?

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 05/12/2022 09:29

And the Scottish YWCA, same dates! What changed I wonder?

ArabellaScott · 05/12/2022 09:33

Seems in 2021 there was a lot of shuffling around. For some reason. Clearly it is an industry with a lot of weel kent faces who all seem to be connected. In some ways I suppose that makes sense. But it will have some obvious drawbacks, too.

Hey, Samph, good to see you!

ArabellaScott · 05/12/2022 09:36

I'm guessing Marsha De Scott of Engender and Marsha Scott of Scottish Women's Aid are the same person. (I think the 'De' is a typo and should be 'Dr').

We should know tomorrow , Tuesday 6/12 when the Stage 3 hearing will be , unless , as we hope the bill is paused until next year.

RhannionKPSS · 06/12/2022 14:53

Looks like 20th December is the debate, vote on 21st.
Please keep on emailing & writing to your MSPs & MPs

dementedma · 06/12/2022 15:47

Are the public allowed into the debate?

nilsmousehammer · 06/12/2022 15:49

It's a done deal.

This is merely the formalities, and it is having to be achieved by compulsion and force, and a lot of coercion and breach of any due process. It is repulsive to watch.

However the way it is being done is so shady that it will be very easy to overturn.

I hope you are right and it can be overturned if passed. Find it very distressing how many of our MSPs care more about the rights of sex offenders than they do about the safety, privacy and dignity of women and girls in Scotland.

dementedma · 06/12/2022 16:28

Who will join me in protest outside the parliament on the day?

BeethovenNinth · 06/12/2022 17:21

I will if I can.

Response from Mark Ruskell.

Thank you for your email about the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill.

This proposed reform is one which I have long supported, and which my party promised to support in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election. The effect will be to make it easier for trans people to obtain a gender recognition certificate (GRC), a process which is currently much criticised by trans people and their allies.

I am aware of objections which have been raised, but I believe that many of these are based on misunderstandings. In particular, the legislation proposed will not affect access to single-sex spaces or services, which are already required not to discriminate against trans people unless this can be shown to be necessary in certain circumstances. This principle of non-discrimination is not dependent on GRC status, and this will remain the case following reform of the GRC process.

There are also concerns about the quality and accessibility of trans healthcare, and while this is not directly related to changes to the process for obtaining a GRC we are committed to improvement in these services. We have already secured crisis funding from the Scottish Government to begin the process of reforming these services, and we expect to bring waiting times in line with other NHS services as well as develop new delivery models. We also expect recommendations on the best ways to achieve equality for non-binary people.

These reforms are, in my view, long overdue. The delay in delivering them has been accompanied by a disturbing rise in transphobic sentiment in politics and in the media, as well as a rise in hate crime. I believe that the Scottish Government and all political parties have a responsibility to challenge transphobia, just as we must challenge homophobia, racism, misogyny, sectarianism and other forms of prejudice. Passing this legislation is only one step, but an important one, and I look forward to voting for it.

Best wishes,

Mark Ruskell

TheBiologyStupid · 06/12/2022 21:47

I'm making a wild guess that Ruskell's letter didn't actually address any of the points that you had made, dementedma?

dementedma · 06/12/2022 21:49

Correct. It's all just "misunderstandings" on my part clearly. Patronising twat

nilsmousehammer · 06/12/2022 21:54

I would love to hear him explain how he's not supporting rampant misogyny, homophobia and the active subordination of every female in his constituency.

He's either thicker than a yard of lard, or he hates women. And gay people.

Whereareyourshoes · 06/12/2022 21:59

Mark Ruskell is one of those disgusting individuals who voted against Johann Lamont’s amendment on forensic medical examinations? Their contempt for women could not be clearer.

RhannionKPSS · 06/12/2022 23:58

Yes he is a vile piece of work.
There were fantastic women protesting at Scottish Labour Party headquarters in Glasgow today.

SierraSapphire · 07/12/2022 07:26

It's a complete lie that it "will not affect access to single-sex spaces or services" - whilst it doesn't change the EA legislation, it will make it much easier for men to access women's spaces because they won't have the same medical scrutiny it will just be on their say so. This as a factual inaccuracy at least needs challenging. It's difficult to believe that this is actually happening and that people who I presume are supposed to be intelligent, can just go along with this dementedma

nilsmousehammer · 07/12/2022 07:33

Yeah, reality based feminism - you CANNOT have a single sex space for females while simultaneously telling males to use any space they like and identify as whatever sex they like.

What he is saying there is that he knows and cannot face his own misogyny in sacrificing females to benefit the inner feels of males. He has to lie to himself about it to be able to say it.

The man is a fuckwit. In need of a fucking therapist.

RhannionKPSS · 07/12/2022 10:33

Please can you keep on contacting your MSPs and MPs all over UK, especially Labour in Scotland.
We need Labour & Conservatives to at least pause this bill before the 20th December debate. If it passes here, then this will spread everywhere.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2022 10:48

Are they capable of doing that, Rhannion? Is there a mechanism by which they can pause it?

Thelnebriati · 07/12/2022 11:00

you CANNOT have a single sex space for females while simultaneously telling males to use any space they like and identify as whatever sex they like.

I don't think they have any intention of upholding 'sex' as a protected characteristic and will conflate it with gender identity. Its why the Sex Matters petition is so important imo. Sex must mean biological sex, and a service for women must be single sex.

nilsmousehammer · 07/12/2022 13:25

Yeah. All this endless wittering about sex isn't a thing, we don't need sex,

while wholly basing ALL this on a rigid, highly Conservative 2 sex based model where one sex always gains at the loss/harm to the other. The sex based thinking is as stark as the endless lying about believing gender trumps it, gender based spaces....

Like hell. This is enabling men and enjoying oppressing women.

RhannionKPSS · 07/12/2022 20:41

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2022 10:48

TBH Arabella I don’t know if it can be paused. Unfortunately unless more SNP & Labour MSPs listen, follow their & our concerns & vote against it, we women are going to have to go to court yet again.

However we do need to keep pushing back if there is the chance to pause it before the 20th.
