And International Trade Secretary. I'd have preferred to see her as Secretary of State for Education in addition to Minister for Women and Equalities, but this is good news.

Excellent news

Justjoinedforthis · 25/10/2022 19:26

But she wanted to rid of all the teaching assistants in schools..?

Datun · 25/10/2022 19:26

Great news.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 25/10/2022 19:28

Oh that is delicious. Well done Kemi.

ScribblingPixie · 25/10/2022 19:35

Now we're talking.

happydappy2 · 25/10/2022 19:35

Whoop whoop, she knows sex matters.

Justjoinedforthis · 25/10/2022 19:38

Also doesn’t think misogyny should be classesd as a hate crime.
Honestly I am GC but celebrating these far right wing nutters is what puts me off these boards completely.

Lots of people don't think hate crimes are a useful category.

Cavviesarethebest · 25/10/2022 19:41

What’s her basic political stance? I’ve struggled to identify her key political positions on other issues.

Musomama1 · 25/10/2022 19:42

Yay!!! Please Kemi 🙏 all systems go on women's spaces before Labour come and ruin it.

I don't think misogyny should be a hate crime either, in fact the whole notion of hate crimes and non crime hate incidents needs a rethink

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 19:43

Well done and good news

Is not agreeing with hate crime legislation far right now?

They’re not literal nazis, which is the implication i assume? What exactly makes Kemi a “right wing nutter”. She always seems very sensible in what she says in parliament. Political discourse and understanding of what ACTUAL extremism is in this country has gone down the toilet. So much hyperbole.

verastan · 25/10/2022 19:46

Harry Miller's experience of "non crime hate incidents" revealed to me that hate crime legislation is a nonsense. Kemi has been very clear on this and I'm pleased about this appointment.

floradora · 25/10/2022 19:46

Kemi Badenoch:

voted in favour of fracking despite the manifesto promise to ban it. She also voted against buffer zones around abortion clinics

napody · 25/10/2022 19:53

Justjoinedforthis · 25/10/2022 19:26

This. I cheered at the thread title as was so sure she would get Education. Thank god. Right wing nutter indeed.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/10/2022 19:55

Really pleased about this, and it's great that she is being called the Minister for Women and Equalities as I thought it was just "Equalities" now.

This. Misogyny as a hate crime will be used against women and girls.

Faffertea · 25/10/2022 20:06

I also think hate crime/non crime hate incidents are not fit for purpose. Great in principle, poor in practice.

Bugger it. Does that mean I’ve gone far right accidentally again?
What with going on anti-war marches, demonstrating for fair trade practices and for women’s rights I’m a real menace to society. 🙄

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/10/2022 20:07

Yeah great on one issue. As for the rest - voted against bringing government policy in line with human rights, she's voted against issues to prevent climate change, she has voted against lying higher benefits for those sick or unable to work, she voted for rising prices and lower benefits, she voted against free school meals for children.
I can't be a one issue voter as her voting history indicates she will make my life (and many others) worse.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/10/2022 20:10

And yes, I have my hard hat on

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/10/2022 20:17

I could see poorly drafted misogyny legislation being used to get women criminalised for expressing gender critical views openly if the law is not very clear about the definition of a woman - i.e. if it's loosely enough drafted that transwomen can argue that they're covered.

I will never vote Tory so I'm not delighted by anything that's happening now, but given we're stuck with this government pro tem it's good we don't have a TWAW person in the Women and Equalities post. That's about as far as I can go.

lannistunut · 25/10/2022 20:17

Badenoch is not good news IMO.

One of the things that I find so upsetting about the self-ID issue is it has become such a wedge - people will align with absolutely monstrous people so long as they hold the same views on self-ID. This applies on both sides.

Hiphopopotamus · 25/10/2022 20:20

FFS - look at who you’re having to align yourselves with. Good news for women? Good news for the LGBT community generally? I’m not sure if it’s genuine tunnel vision or if you actually think she is a positive force for women and minorities in this country but it’s actually scary. No wonder GC ‘feminists’ get such a bad rap - this is insane.
