And International Trade Secretary. I'd have preferred to see her as Secretary of State for Education in addition to Minister for Women and Equalities, but this is good news.

@Apollo442 I understand perfectly well. You people are unhinged.

Why? Because we welcome an Equalities Minister who will protect the interests of women and girls? Sorry she fails your purity spiral, I suggest you grow up and learn how to debate rather than throwing groundless insults.

I could see poorly drafted misogyny legislation being used to get women criminalised for expressing gender critical views openly if the law is not very clear about the definition of a woman - i.e. if it's loosely enough drafted that transwomen can argue that they're covered.

I will never vote Tory so I'm not delighted by anything that's happening now, but given we're stuck with this government pro tem it's good we don't have a TWAW person in the Women and Equalities post. That's about as far as I can go.

Yep, this also sums up how I feel about this appointment.

Duckskitbank · 25/10/2022 20:44

@lannistunut my other political views are irrelevant because I’m a single issue voter. I will hold my nose and vote for whoever vows to protect women’s rights and safeguard children. It’s that important to me. You can’t infer anything else from the fact that I align with Badenoch on the gender issue and I’m pleased to have someone strong and clear in this role.

Being liked by Tory members is really NOT a sign of general popularity.

Many in the parliamentary party find her views extreme - that is why she got so few nominations. She is of the right.

Don't be daft. You are talking bollocks. She did extremely well in the leadership race. Where is your evidence that MPs didn't vote for her because they find her "abhorrent"? She is on the right of the Conservative party. That is not the same as being a right wing extremist. Where the fuck is your perspective?

RoseslnTheHospital · 25/10/2022 20:48

@lannistunut there is no "this board", there are only individual posters.

Badenoch is unlikely to support any policies that remove sex based protections for women and girls due to gender identity beliefs. That's a positive. She also holds other views that I vehemently disagree with. Other MPs voted the same way as her on fracking and buffer zones. Including my constituency MP. Is he a right wing nutter too?

You seem very angry!

It is widely known she makes many moderate Tories Hmm

Badenoch's views are very right wing. This is really not news. The very right wing of the Tory party is pretty extreme. The very left wing of Labour is pretty extreme. Have you really never read a neewspaper or book about UK politics?

She may recognise what a woman is but there is nothing whatsoever to suggest she will protect women's rights. In fact everything in her past suggests quite the opposite.

beastlyslumber · 25/10/2022 20:51

I love Kemi and think she would make a good pm too. Happy with this as she is very clear on her opposition to wokery of all kinds.

The frothing at the mouth from posters calling her abhorrent and a monster! A monster 👻 fucking hell, get some perspective.

I haven't used the word nutter and would not, as I said upthread.

I do not know who your MP is, so can't comment.

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 20:53

There are many women on here who care about women’s sex based rights but not as many in government, and some who believe TWAW so for a role like this I want someone who is firm on sex based reality.

I can’t think of many who fit the bill. Most aren’t interested or are TWAW.

SlagathaChristie · 25/10/2022 20:53

Love how fucked up political discourse/silo effect is when everyone right of Blair gets called "right wing nutter" by people who genuinely think they're being clever. Tories have shifted left over the years, they're mostly neolibs now, so anybody actually right-wing (and no, that's not an insult) is seen as outlandish. Well, on mumsnet and twitter, anyway.

Having said that, I actually think unborn babies don't deserve to be killed for being inconvenient to their parents, and would restrict elective abortions to 1st trimester, so I'm probably just a literal nazi or something.

I didn't say she was a monster, I said her views are monstrous.

Political opinions are allowed to be strongly held - Badenoch herself holds strong views.

fromorbit · 25/10/2022 20:54

Kemi Badenoch started the Cass Review which is going to save a lot of kids and others from medical disaster. We should all respect her for that though I disagree with many of her other positions re fracking and economics, gay marriage.

If you are concerned with battling gender ideas in government then I think she will do a good job.

Personally I would prefer to have Rosie Duffield as Minister for Women though.

Yeh agree ‘monstrous’ is hyperbole.

Justjoinedforthis · 25/10/2022 19:26

But she wanted to rid of all the teaching assistants in schools..?

This. I'm delighted [now]* she knows what a woman is but the idea of getting rid of TA's shows how out of touch she is with state education. Right wingers are rarely good for women.

*The parenthesis refer to a letter I wrote to her as my constituency MP around 5 years ago about people being able to get around DBS with new birth certificates. As I have mentioned on previous KB threads I got a "be kind" response. She may be on board now but she was late to the party.

You understand that she considers anti racism and support for womens rights to be 'wokeism'?

The same woman who voted against feeding the most vulnerable of these children? Who voted for benefit cuts for people (including women) who are too ill to work and has mocked same sex marriage.

Lots of people don't think hate crimes are a useful category.

Indeed - and IIRC, the fear was that the proposed misogyny hate crime was very loose on its definition of "woman" and would be weaponised against GC women by the usual suspects.

lifeturnsonadime · 25/10/2022 20:59

Sadly her views on schools is enough to put me off.

And I'm as GC as they come.

WhiteFire · 25/10/2022 20:59

We've got the government the country voted for and all that that entails.

I do find the absolute polarisation of views strange though, there doesn't seem to be any nuance anymore.

PutYourShoesOnWereLate · 25/10/2022 20:55

What do you mean? Anti racism in the crt sense is wokism (and is racist). And she supports women agains gender ideology, which is also woke.

Which rights for women is she opposed to?

At least nobody has compared Kemi Badonoch to Hitler yet.
That's probably about as nuanced as this discussion is likely to get.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/10/2022 21:06

Justjoinedforthis · 25/10/2022 19:38

Also doesn’t think misogyny should be classesd as a hate crime.
Honestly I am GC but celebrating these far right wing nutters is what puts me off these boards completely.

Same. She might know what a woman is, but that doesn't mean she's on our side.

Well it's one thing expressing strong views. A lot of people are just name calling though. Monster, monstrous, abhorrent... She's not actually a demon, just a politician.

I think the far right of the Tory party is monstrous. They are happy to destroy the things that make Britain great - our culture, our heritage, our environment and our communities. That is monstrous to me.
