Another surrogacy nightmare

What the fuck will happen to these babies?

This is what happens when humans are allowed to be bought and sold.

I see the article has no mention at all of the poor woman who gave birth to the triplets. Doesn't seem like the father is very concerned for her health either.

FrancescaContini · 20/10/2022 13:10

It’s all about him, isn’t it?

PuttingDownRoots · 20/10/2022 13:11

I reserve my sympathy for the three babies rather than the "parents". (I notice the mother isn't even mentioned! I hope she got all the medical care she needed)

International commercial surrogacy is ethically wrong. Nothing to do with how good the Intended Parents may be, but the transactional and legal nature of these arrangements cause more problems than they solve.

Beowulfa · 20/10/2022 13:12

You mean the buying and selling of human beings leads to unscrupulous behaviour?

CrossStichQueen · 20/10/2022 13:13

It's all how he feels and the financial costs. Nothing about the mum do we even know if the mum is alive?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/10/2022 13:14

Three babies so a very high risk pregnancy and the 'agency' haven't paid the hospital bill. Is the mother ok??

Suprima · 20/10/2022 13:14

If you read his gofundme, this blokes stupidity just jumps out. He is surprised about TRIPLETS being born early and needing more support, and was not prepared for the mounting medical bills.

he also believes they are ‘Irish citizens’ so the embassy should intervene - erm no they aren’t. Not yet. They are presumably Kenyans born to a Kenyan mother.

I find it so upsetting that these little lives are being brought into the world in such an unregulated industry. That ivf clinic is obviously marketing itself to the misinformed and ignorant who just want to buy babies in the cheapest way they possibly can.

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/10/2022 13:14

I bet the mum had no say in any of this. Poor babies

ChookityPok · 20/10/2022 13:16

I mean, was he expecting the surrogate to foot the bill for the triplets being born early? Is he so thick he thought that triplets wouldn’t come early and have issues? Or was he just so obsessed with having a cute baby to cart around like a fucking handbag that he never considered any of this?

Suprima · 20/10/2022 13:17

his written English is also worrying. I honestly wonder about this man’s mental capacity and whether he even was able to read the paperwork properly.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/10/2022 13:17

Poor babies. The bloke should have known there were risks to their health (and to the surrogate) and a high chance of extra medical bills from implanting multiple embryos, which is presumably what happened. They should have known that it was an even more unethical outfit than most from that.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/10/2022 13:21

When you treat children like a customised product manufactured by an anonymous woman then is it any surprise that they are similarly dehumanised and exploited on the other side of the transaction?

ChookityPok · 20/10/2022 13:22

Agreed.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/10/2022 13:28

ChookityPok · 20/10/2022 13:22

Agreed.

That's not his written English. He's being quoted by the author - and, given the subject, was likely upset throughout the interview.

cataline · 20/10/2022 13:31

It's his written English on the GoFundNe page though - and it is dreadful.

Utterly delusional and completely naive. Those poor babies.

Didn't think it could get much worse but they're called Briella, Camilla and Renesmee apparently.

Soubriquet · 20/10/2022 13:34

Why on earth would you choose a Kenyan surrogate when you’re Irish?

No way is it cheaper. Those poor babies are going to be left in the lurch. People will end up donating but I bet the agency finds more things to ask money for

RoseslnTheHospital · 20/10/2022 13:36

And this is why this should not be allowed to happen. Commissioning babies to be bought and sold to those who can afford it. Or not as it turns out.

Presumably if the babies' mother (for clarity, the woman who bore and birthed them) doesn't want to take custody of them, then they will be left in the care of the Kenyan state, in some kind of children's home when they are well enough to leave hospital?

Beachsidesunset · 20/10/2022 13:36

Barely a mention of his partner too. I wonder if they are on board?

I don’t suppose there are many countries that will allow three embryos to be implanted in a surrogate?

It’s going to be a very high risk pregnancy, when even a singleton pregnancy via IVF with a donor egg is high risk.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 20/10/2022 13:39

I wonder if it was a black woman who carried and gave birth to those white babies.

Soubriquet · 20/10/2022 13:40

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 20/10/2022 13:39

Highly likely since Kenya is a predominant Black Country.

TheClogLady · 20/10/2022 13:45

I would imagine so. I just googled and only 0.1% of the Kenyan population is white.

my heart hurts for her, and for those three baby girls.

Call me sexist if you like but I’ve got serious doubts about a man’s ability to care for newborn triplets, and whoever his partner is they don’t seem to be very present!

(I’m half wondering if it’s a same sex relationship and they are worried that being open about it will create additional issues in Kenya? www.humandignitytrust.org/country-profile/kenya )

ChateauMargaux · 20/10/2022 13:46

Hmm.. 50,000 for three babies... His expectations of surrogate pregnancy, neonatal care costs for triplets and the statehood of children born abroad seem entirely unrealistic. There is, oddly, no mention of his partner.... I wonder if there is a reason why only one parent is being quoted in this story.

fruitbrewhaha · 20/10/2022 13:47

I wonder if he really is being conned or if the extra money is actually an increase in costs at the hospital.

Presumably the contract would state that if there were any complication arising in the birth they would be liable. And one would presume that birthing 3 babies would have complications. I suspect the £16k is to cover the cost of this intervention and the around the clock care for the three for a couple of months.

TheClogLady · 20/10/2022 13:52

This is the text from the Gofundme page:

Laying in a hospital room in Kenya are 3 beautiful baby girls. They are our triplets born at 32weeks, all overeager to arrive into the world. They’re in incubators, with wires attached to them, oxygen helping one of them breathe and monitors beeping. Next to them I stay, as long as I am allowed every day.
^^
^^
I am edward, I’m Irish and now dad to these amazing little girls. My partner and I had a dream to grow our family and become parents. We embarked on a journey to become parents in 2021 and with the help of our beutiful surragate we where blessed with 3 perfect little angels.
^^
We have spent the past few months in apprehensive excitement. Everyday we prayed our babies and surrogate would be ok, but they’ve arrived very early and classed as very premature. Now we are facing the prospect of weeks or months of 24 hour hospital care. The bills are already mounting and we are stuck. Our savings are almost depleted, we are desperate and getting money anyway we can but we need help. Our babies need help!
^^
^^
Our beautiful princesses are a miracle and we thank God for them every day. We can’t fail them, but that’s how we feel right now with the prospect of a €25,000+ bill that we can’t pay.
^^
^^
Please help us as we cannot continue to buy the specialist formula, pay the nurses to administer care or even pay for the 24 hour monitoring keeping our girls alive right now. With any of the donation we receive, we will purchase their formula, medications, and pay the hospital bills. We also need to get them to Ireland. Without it our girls will not make it home with us.
^^
Please donate now to help us save our babies.
