Home Secretary should reform failing police forces - think tank https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-627323366^

Very pleased to see this statement, and the BBC reporting it, but is it going to make a difference?

Check out the ratio on this tweet. People were not impressed:

"It’s been a really busy weekend for us, but whilst our night patrols were briefing for #Pride, someone decided to smash up our police car. That’s one less vehicle to respond to emergencies, not just tonight, but until it’s repaired. #CarDown"

I think they have an image problem.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 31/08/2022 12:17

I think they lost me at the ‘briefing for Pride’. If it had been ‘ while we were responding to domestic violence, or a robbery, or a knife fight, you know , ’Crimes’, I would have been more sympathetic.
So that’s another police resource effectively out of action because of the blue hair brigade ( apologies to anyone who has nice blue hair and is not a MRA).

FlibbertyGiblets · 31/08/2022 12:34

I lol'd at 'where were the Police when you needed them?'. (HINT: Being briefed for Pride) Awkward!

Felix125 · 31/08/2022 12:56

I'm assuming the 'Pride' will be an event which will need to be policed

ResisterRex · 31/08/2022 12:59

It's by a think tank which is independent but seems quite right of centre. It was set up by three Conservatives. I thought they rang a bell - this is one report I remember

twitter.com/joannaccherry/status/1531189072491909120?s=21&t=6kXol-pqgMfOeXJJMtwBYg

Seems like quite often (or often enough), their papers end up being used by the Conservatives. The one in the OP might be one of theirs to watch.

Ouch. Those comments are quite.... acute. Public trust may be damaged?

Er, get forensics to check that horse's door. I think it bolted some time ago.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/08/2022 13:07

I don't know about "woke", but the MET seem more interested in sexually assaulting women and children to demonstrate their authority than dealing with insignificant stuff like crime.

RoseslnTheHospital · 31/08/2022 13:08

I don't have any issue with the police being briefed on the plan for policing a large public event at which they are required to keep order. But they do really need to understand that videos of them dancing and taking political positions eg removing lesbians from a pride march are not going to win public trust.

Plasmodesmata · 31/08/2022 13:22

The report mentioned badges on uniform too. I wonder if that also applies to rainbow police cars.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/08/2022 13:32

The social media comms person really should have just said "briefing" or "briefing for tonight".

WhiteFire · 31/08/2022 14:53

That Twitter thread - two police officers stood with two 'dogs' WTAF.

I need to be working, now I have that image burnt on my eyeballs. Who took it? Who thought it good optics to share?

Or 'briefing for crowd control'. I don't think they'd have added that detail for a football match or a march. It was to give the impression of being super-awesome-great.

Which would be fine if they were. But they're still tainted with sexism and racism, some of it fatal. Women and PoC aren't fooled by the rainbows that they've stopped that overnight.

So, what would the public like to see...?

What things do you class as being 'Woke' that must stop and how will that help achieve the goals the public want

Echobelly · 31/08/2022 20:44

The police may not be good enough at solving/ investigating crimes but maybe that's because of years of massive under investment by this government? Maybe it suits the government that massively under invested in policing to blame non-existent wokeness rather their failings for this? This government is laughing all the way at people whose attention it can divert by this method.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 31/08/2022 21:35

non-existent wokeness

that “non-existent” undermines everything else you wrote. I’m sure that underfunding is much more the problem than the cops spending all their time and money dancing the Macarena, painting their squad cars with rainbows and arresting people for Tweets. But there’s no point pretending the latter isn’t happening, and if resources are so scarce then the questions about how they are allocated are that much more urgent.

I think it's more that the thin veil of attending Pride doesn't cover the gaping wound of raping and murdering women, horrible institutional racism and other awful, discriminatory actions.

It's cheap and meaningless and a lot of people see it for what it is. Token bullshit. It would be great if the police actually were woke, or fought crime adequately, but it's plain they do neither. So stop pretending.

JoyousAsOtters · 31/08/2022 22:33

For anyone who’s wondering, my hidden post above has a link in it. It was to the page on this think tank’s site (Policy Exchange) where the attorney general’s speech clarifying equality law can be found.

DuesToTheDirt · 31/08/2022 22:46

Well this is the top story on the BBC tonight. The lack of action from the police is frightening. (I'm assuming the story is accurate.)

Those mums are so angry, understandably so. What a risible and pathetic load of guff from Lancs Police: "When people call us in an emergency, we will always be there to answer the phone and to send officers as soon as we can where there is an ongoing threat or risk." ie we will send a plod round to yours 48 hrs later, also "When there is no ongoing risk or threat, or crime in action, we will arrange to visit people at a time convenient to them so we can investigate and solve crime and deliver the best outcomes for all." ie 4 months without an update, yet "all calls in relation to all the incidents in this article have been "dealt with appropriately". "

FGS.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/08/2022 23:55

I saw the BBC story and as horrific as it was, I wasn't surprised. The police aren't policing. It's not because they're too wokeHmm, it's because the service is broken. I'm fed up with the bullshit excuses designed to stir up hatred of minority communities.

The police service is a fucking disgrace and it is the fault of the government and the police themselves. They are not fit for purpose!Angry

RoseslnTheHospital · 31/08/2022 23:55

Is the issue that the police really just don't have the resources/people/funding any more to respond to violent crime, or is it incompetence/bad decision making/policy decisions/bad management?

No political badges/lanyards/vehicle repaints/social media posts etc. The public must have confidence that police officers will treat them impartially.

And yes, that may have to include not permitting poppies to be worn when in uniform, as a blanket rule is easiest to enforce.

Plus less time chasing fashionable causes in order to get the Superintendent his next promotion, and more time spent on the sorts of crime that actually affects people.

A caution is a pathetic outcome for something that was ABH, if not GBH.
