“My view of gender politics is you bring people into the tent. Womanhood is a big tent. It embraces me and Kim Kardashian. There’s certainly room in that tent for the trans women I know.”

Translate. Right answers only.

The writer? Very twaw, I believe.

RudsyFarmer · 09/08/2022 11:57

My translation.is.... my opinion is the right opinion. Disagree with me at your peril.

PriamFarrl · 09/08/2022 11:57

I read that as TWAW. But I wonder that she feels obligated to say that due to one of her earlier books being rather the opposite.

Greenleevses · 09/08/2022 11:59

"There are lots of different types of women, so men can be women too."

FlibbertyGiblets · 09/08/2022 11:59

She has forgotten about the tw she doesn't know. How would she gatekeep the unknowns?

I am aware this is the wrong answer, off to the gulag with me.

RoyalCorgi · 09/08/2022 11:59

People who aren't women are women!

Dogs can be cats!

Tables can be chairs!

And so on...

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 09/08/2022 12:00

‘ i was extremely, vocally grateful to go to a women’s college at Oxford, which I have acknowledged many times. I was lucky to be born into an era when being a same sex attracted woman did not have to be hidden. I was fortunate to be able to marry my partner, and raise a child with her.

recently, the Lesbian scene has been infiltrated by men claiming to be women, claiming to be lesbians. I’m getting on now; I don’t want to lose my lucrative speaking engagements and my publishing contracts by rocking the boat. So I’ll just betray everything I benefited from’.

oh Val, Val, you changed from when I knew you.

unwashedanddazed · 09/08/2022 12:00

I do wonder at her use of KK as an example, suggesting she and her are so wildly different as to allow men to be brought into the same group. Yet the difference between VM and KK is merely decoration. Strip away the artifice and what's left is identical.

I'm surprised someone so bright can be fooled by cosmetics.

Helleofabore · 09/08/2022 12:03

That was very much TW AW from my interpretation.

achillestoes · 09/08/2022 12:04

It’s interesting that she seems to think she exists in such a different ‘sphere’ of womanhood to KK that it justifies adding men to the definition. Which of them (her or KK) does she consider as being marginal to the definition? In what way are they not both just women, but wearing different clothes?

It roughly translates as ‘As a mouthpiece for the SNP and staunch supporter of independence I’ll spout the nonsensical party line on the trans issue in order to continue using Bute House to sell my books’.

PicturesOfDogs · 09/08/2022 12:10

I read it as basically saying that KK is such an affront to her sensibilities that to even consider them in the same category you’d also need to include men.

So she’s dim and bitchy.
Great

I misread this to say " very twatty" Grin

Zerogravity · 09/08/2022 12:14

What's the point of a womanhood tent if anyone can come in?

achillestoes · 09/08/2022 12:14

@PicturesOfDogs

That’s how I read it.

Once read properly this is how I interpreted it too.

achillestoes · 09/08/2022 12:18

Either that or - and this is very sad - she considers herself that way. “If X is a woman, that person over there who has the same hair must be a woman”.

OP posts:
Greenleevses · 09/08/2022 12:20

"Womanhood is a big tent."

One of the weirder definitions I've seen, though less offensive than the one about "being fucked".

NecessaryScene · 09/08/2022 12:21

I doubt even she knows what she means. Being only able to communicate via metaphor means you probably haven't thought it through properly.

countrypunk · 09/08/2022 12:21

So because women can conform to gender stereotypes (KK) or flout gender stereotypes (me), men can be women.

What she's saying makes absolutely zero sense, and is actually horribly sexist.

EHopes · 09/08/2022 12:24

I'm hoping she is just putting words together and not wanting them to mean anything real.

She's right that the tent is very big. But her conclusion appears to be that the TW she knows can be women enough to fit in with us.

Still not sure about the ones she's yet to meet.

Humbolt · 09/08/2022 12:24

Val, you can have your big tent full of Kim's and Caitlin Js as long as we can have our women-only tent. I'll bring my beers.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 09/08/2022 12:25

Agree! Such a shame that to be involved in Scottish politics you have to vocally agree with sidelining biological females- Nicola Sturgeon does not get it either :(

achillestoes · 09/08/2022 12:27

It is a big tent, but it’s a tent, not RadioShack. We don’t have everything.
