Nick Cohen suspended over trans rights row

I see a certain so-called 'campaiging lawyer' has managed to get Nick Cohen suspended because of his gender critical views.

So, because multiple people were doing it, that lessens how bad it was?

No it doesn't. As I clearly said.

Well, if it leads anyone here, they will see that almost all itsabouttimetoo's posts have been deleted.

can't say I'm surprised.

Ooh, I've missed out on all those valuable contributions to the discussion, was there much transphobia in those posts, or some other breach of rules?

Strewth. It's like whack a mole today.

This is where misogyny gets you. Claiming that this is Mumsnet defending predators.

Not to deny or diminish the accusations against him, but knowing what working life was like for young women in 2001, I doubt he was the only one doing it. But it's a very good thing if the whole male culture of these workplaces gets exposed and anyone responsible faces consequences.

Faffertea · 03/08/2022 16:14

Hello Twitter monitors!

MN FWR is not a hive mind so we don’t all do, say or believe one thing.
But it would be an odd sort of feminist board that didn’t want to see a proper investigation into whether a man was sexually violent to women and in particular it seems more junior women at his and their place of work.

For the avoidance of doubt:
So far the consensus is that’s it’s a GOOD thing that where women have come forward to report sexual violence from Cohen this is investigated.
Given Maugham’s previous displays of misogyny there is a sneaking suspicion that his motivation for wanting Cohen investigated is because he doesn’t like Cohen’s views on transgenderism rather than because he has a burning desire to see justice done for female victims of male violence.

IvyTwines · 03/08/2022 16:15

I've seen comments and subtweets about Cohen for a while now. I have about other men in the public arena too, which have never properly been brought into daylight. If fox-killer was bothered about bad behaviour towards women he'd have been using his loud voice on his very public soapbox to call out those on his own side who send death and rape threats to women, etc. etc.. Do you remember him doing that? I don't. And that's why we're cynical about the motives behind his sudden enthusiasm here.

With respect, I wasn't quoting you, I was quoting someone who used part of your post to claim that the alligations were a witch hunt against Cohen.

There was a lot of frothing and not being, er, honest about the reasons for the thread they claim they got deleted.

(But, sadly, Columbo came there none.)

Take it up with HighTides, as that was the person I was responding to, they took the post by Ereshkigalangcleg out of context.

The suspicion is borne out, rightly or wrongly, by the original article in the Telegraph, in which Maugham is described as being angry about Cohen's trans posts and putting out a call for women to talk to him about Cohen. As I said before, if there were existing rumours about Cohen it's highly plausible that is what he was working on the basis of.

👏

To add, unlike The Telegraph we're not throwing women under the bus as an opportunity to stick it to the trans.

More often than not, the transphobia on here is actually posted by people who claim to be 'trans supporters'. Just for the screenshots.

It usually doesn't take long for their mask to slip. Thankfully MNHQ are on the ball with these terrible transphobic posts and get them deleted pronto.

itsabouttimetoo · 03/08/2022 18:32

@AlisonDonut i’m transphobic because I called you out on your transphobia 😂😂 don’t make me laugh. My posts were deleted probably because they were considered a personal attack. So glad Twitter have their head screwed on!

Personal attack, slurring women, lying about the reasons for a thread deletion, take your pick.

Not in the slightest bit surprised that you're proud to be able to get away with it elsewhere.

Datun · 03/08/2022 19:12

And yes, transphobic comments are often posted by TRAs, in order to get a thread pulled. Tedious, juvenile nonsense.

Greenleevses · 03/08/2022 20:03

So glad Twitter have their head screwed on!

LOL

itsabouttimetoo · 03/08/2022 20:04

@Datun considering this thread has also stated that TRAs are lying to cancel Nick Cohen, called me transphobic for calling out transphobia amongst other bullying on other threads, I’m going to take it with a pinch of salt that transphobic comments are posted by people who supports trans rights. Scanning all the threads it is the same names I see popping up and you all clearlyyy have a lot of time on your hands. Have an enjoyable evening

Yes, I for instance was on it before you joined it, so no sinister plot.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 03/08/2022 21:24

I happen to have been there on twitter when JM put the original call out. The request was clearly retaliatory in spirit and motivated by other disagreements, and came across as purely speculative.

However, in a deeply misogynistic world, where sexual harassment has been normalised for centuries (just look at Samuel Pepys' diary), it never surprises me if a request for evidence against a man finds witnesses. I am pleased to hear of men being investigated for sexual harassment.

But I won't pretend to myself that JM would have made that tweet if NC agreed with him on gender identity theory. No gaslighting me, thanks. I saw the tweets.

Don't people get suspended or banned when they've racked up a lot of deletions?

<waits>

itsabouttimetoo · 03/08/2022 21:49

I highly doubt I will get banned from Mumsnet for calling out transphobia when I see it. I’ve seen many posts be deleted from posters I recognise and they seem to still be posting. Two whole threads have also been deleted as they were blatantly transphobic or another described as “churlish”.

itsabouttimetoo · 03/08/2022 21:51

*post be deleted on the FSG thread for transphobia. When they were deleted, GC posters were up in arms saying they were being muted etc.

Thanks for confirming that PurgatoryOfPotholes.

And, although I agree, isn't it depressing that if you merely ask for evidence of predation, a lot of the time you're just going to get it.
