Just seen this on Twitter.
something to do with someone arranging trans flags to look like swastikas apparently.
Harry defending them and got arrested

Also, apparently the flags are designed so that when you just lay them down a certain way (without interfering or doctoring them at all) they form a swastika.

Even more interestingly, the chappie who got arrested was apparently not the person who took the photo of the offending flags. The chappie was apparently arrested for retweeting the photo of the offending flags.

IcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2022 10:19

Someone posted it at the beginning of this thread, should they be worried? Should MN be worried? I hope not, offensive or not, I find the thought that they might have to be worried offensive.

As far as we know the original photographer of the image has not been arrested/spoken to, bit like when harry was told to check his thinking for retweeting a limerick. Again as far as we know the writer of the limerick was never told to check their thinking.
It seems if you are too hard to find/use aliases/hide your online presence the police aren't bothered. But surely the bigger crime is making the image/limerick in the first place, to be clear I dont think it's a crime.
Why would you also only try to re-educate one out of potentially millions of people who retweeted an image or limerick?
Looks a lot like bullying to me. Pick on the one who probably wont fight back, send a message to all Terven, it wont work unless the thing is in fact illegal.

VaggieMight · 31/07/2022 11:55

Sharing the image doesn't seem to be the crime. The hate crime/incident occurs if someone sees it shared and is offended. HM and LF admitted to the police that they had both shared the image.

ZombieMumEB · 31/07/2022 12:07

Does anyone wonder if a time machine has been built, and the gestapo have infiltrated the police in the UK?

That's what it appears to me, from over here in Australia.

Very chilling indeed to see this unfold. History repeating itself.

Rather an ironic post given the original was about posting a swastika!

Or in fact posting an arrangement of pride flags that looked like a swastika.
I thought it was class 101 of design to see if your image could be arranged to make something like that then redesign.

MangyInseam · 31/07/2022 13:04

I think it is fair to say that whomever the designer of that flag is, he or she is not quite top notch.

A judge made the same comparison due to the police behaving like they did here.

Mr Justice Julian Knowles ruled: “The effect of the police turning up at [Miller’s] place of work because of his political opinions must not be under-estimated.

“To do so would be to undervalue a cardinal democratic freedom. In this country we have never had a Cheka, a Gestapo or a Stasi.

“We have never lived in an Orwellian society.”

The police here turned up to this man's house to have words because his social media post had 'caused someone anxiety'.

I wonder what women who are threatened with death, rape and bombs have to do to get the police to take them seriously? They're advised to come off social media if death and rape threats are too much for them, yet if a man gets hurty feelz, they'll send 3 officers in vans to deal with it.

*Rather an ironic post given the original was about posting a swastika [made out of trans flags]!

It’s not the post that’s ironic, it’s the reaction of the TRAs and the police to the original image that’s ironic.

VaggieMight · 31/07/2022 14:25

@commonsense61 I really don't know. Reading up on the definition of hate non-crime/incident might explain it, but even the police don't seem to understand so I doubt it's very clear. In the video the policeman said that the reason the guy is in cuffs and not HM or LF is because someone had seen his post and it made them anxious. The police didn't seem bothered about who shared it, but it becomes a police issue if someone reports it for hurt feelings.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 31/07/2022 14:30

Imagine if misogyny were a hate crime, the police force would collapse under the strain.

Surely the person who designed the flag should be the one arrested, this is woke nonsense gone mad.

VaggieMight · 31/07/2022 16:15

@commonsense61 I think it's all bollocks too.

They have not come to their senses, they just do not give a shit about LGBT. They will enact whatever will get them votes.

Yes, Labour take note

I don't think it was a deliberate design choice, but maybe in this crazy world that wouldn't matter to the police!

GC has no issue with LGB. The issues are with the authoritarian, ideology-pushing, bullying behaviour of the T.

I have to say I was a little tongue in cheek with that remark.
Nevertheless, it is inherent in the way the flags are designed; whether the designer was clueless or not.

It may have been beyond the designers wit/capacity/competency to envisage how the flag (they designed) would look like a swastika when laid out like this. Yet, they did design it like that. Maybe the polis should take them in for questioning or re-education.

I remember being on a design course, fiddling around with an image of a toucan which I'd drawn, & accidentally coming up with swastikas when I repeated & translated the image - that one got ditched pretty quickly!

I didn't know there was a general rule about it, though.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/07/2022 19:11

Has anyone tried reporting anti-women tweets/FB posts to the police? I find those offensive. Do they qualify as hate incidents? I'm guessing not, as the College of Police guidance left out sex when it defined hate crimes/incidents.

It's a long time ago I did a short design course, local authority thing, free with childcare , stuff you do for references. One of the first lessons was on how your design could be (like this pride flag thing) used in a way to mimic iirc
Deus vault, Confederate flag, a noose unless that's what you were aiming at, and some others I cant remember now.
And this was a local college, part time 12 week course. So if it was covered there, I imagine a full blown degree might cover it too.

Terfydactyl · 31/07/2022 19:19

Sorry, to add, the white space between images too should be looked at carefully to see if it made a swastika or the like. Not just the image if that makes sense

This is from the CPS website:

The law recognises five types of hate crime on the basis of:
Race
Religion
Disability
Sexual orientation
Transgender identity
Any crime can be prosecuted as a hate crime if the offender has either:
demonstrated hostility based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity
Or
been motivated by hostility based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity
Someone can be a victim of more than one type of hate crime.

If you report that you find tweets/posts offensive because they are offensive to lesbian i.e. homosexual women, you might have a shout.

Although frankly why not report some as them as offensive to the sexual orientation of being a hetereosexual or bisexual woman? Or women who are not NT? Or women who are of a religion that relies on same-sex spaces for religious cleansing rituals? It's all nuts.
