What a wonderful accolade!

I'm so pleased for her. I know she'll do a phenomenal job - compassionate, kind and wise

But @GoodJanetBadJanet, not all of the LGB community really agree on the "T" part, that's the point. Some LGB people won't be bothered about having Cherry as chair. It's not about the LGB bit, it's about how you feel about the T bit.

What is is about Joanna Cherry that is so scary? She isn't going to ban being trans, or encourage people to inflict violence on them. She only has reviewing powers for certain policy items at best. Yes, she does have a view on things like single sex spaces and the conflict of womens vs trans rights, but I don't think that she has ever said that people are not entitled to disagree with her. Why is it "scary" that some (in fact a majority, according to polls) people believe that biological sex is at least sometimes relevant?

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 21:37

"All I can see is people worried where they will stand because of her views on trans issues."
That's all you see because that's all you are looking at and listening to.
Being terrified is hyperbole

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 21:43

Winding people up to a state where they are scared of people talking about conflicting rights is not kind or fair

My comment "all I can see" was regarding the comments mentioned on Twitter that people said were raging, I was saying no, not raging, just worried people.
I wasn't referring to anything else.

I've just had a look at Twitter after seeing this thread.
All I can see is people worried where they will stand because of her views on trans issues.
No "raging" like pp said upthread, or tantrums which people on here are always trying to make out is happening (why? Why desperate to always paint opposing viewpoints as aggressive?)
Just worried people.
I just see it as shit to dismiss their concerns as *being a delicate flower."

Yes, there is raging and the usual hyperbole:

"Fuck Joanna Cherry the transphobic cnut"
"she wants to torture children"
"fascism is in full swing In the UK"
"Were Nurse Ratched, Voldemort, Darth Vader and The Joker all unavailable."

And so on.

Very good news, congratulations Joanna. A very worthy choice by those who voted.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 21:52

It's a shame that people are getting upset but they are ill served by advocates who conned them into thinking that no one would mind about the impact on women's rights. The YouGov poll, imperfect as it is, shows that they do mind. Forced teaming with LGB and manufacturing nonsense with Q+ "identities " has consequences

PearlClutch · 20/07/2022 21:55

GoodJanetBadJanet · 20/07/2022 20:59

JC is also a lesbian so why would she be a threat to the LGB community?
You know full well what you've done there.
The LGBT community. Not LGB.
You're a regular on here, you know that it's worries regarding trans people, so why pretend otherwise by "innocently" lopping the T off?

Are lesbians, gay men, and bisexual women allowed to have a community? These are three groups defined by their sexual orientation, why on earth do you think they are obliged to include people who are defined (in this context) by their 'gender'? 'Gender' has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

PearlClutch · 20/07/2022 21:56

I would genuinely like to know, GoodJanet, what it is that you think unites LGB and T people? What do the first three groups have in common with the latter group?

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 21:58

Read this thread. Or at least the OP. The article will more likely be taken seriously because it's a man. But this is what GC women have been saying for years. And have lost their jobs for saying it.

She made a very valuable contribution to the JCHR inquiry into forced adoptions as part of the panel. This panel has almost got an apology out of the Government for women that have waited into their 80's feeling they massive shame (the report is well worth looking up).

TRA's hijacked this and put their own agenda on top of it due to her participation.

Drowning out the voices of these brave women for whom time is running out. A despicable bunch.

figmaofmyimagination · 20/07/2022 22:00

Excellent news. Let’s get the grown ups round the table again.

This is the damaging flip side of purity politics and guilt by association isn't it?

whiteroseredrose · 20/07/2022 22:14

Fabulous!

Manderleyagain · 20/07/2022 22:40

Who votes for the position? Is it all thr committee members?

Mollyollydolly · 20/07/2022 22:42

Great. She's a formidable politician. Good for her - she's been treated very badly by her party. Glad to see her colleagues obviously value her.

Ok, fair enough, point taken, but that goes both ways as others only see what they want to, rage, and refuse to entertain the idea that a lot of people who are LGBT are scared for their rights right now.

But why? There's literally nothing to be scared of other than T being the sacred caste above all other beings.

Nothing to be scared of other than T NO LONGER being the sacred caste above all others.

Why do you never care about women that are worried about their rights?
You seem absolutely fine with women being driven out of spaces due to males being present, but the second a trans person feels uncomfortable it's all hands on deck. I wonder why that could be.
I'm sure you'll come back saying that you care about women's rights, but I can't recall a single time that you've turned up and stood up for women over anything related to trans.

Why would the appointment of Joanna Cherry to the JCHR make them scared for their rights? Why are you buying that utter nonsense? As another poster said why do you never stand up for women?

Agreed. The tiresome hyperbole on Twitter appears to centre around the fact that other group's needs (namely all of the protected characteristics) will now be properly considered and not just those of trans people. This is where the mantra 'there is no conflict between trans rights and women's rights' has fallen down. Because there obviously is a conflict. And demanding that there isn't, against all evidence, hasn't really served trans people at all well. Now we can have an actual, grown up conversation about it.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 23:14

"Ok, fair enough, point taken, but that goes both ways as others only see what they want to, rage, and refuse to entertain the idea that a lot of people who are LGBT are scared for their rights right now."
Certainly am reading them. I put the blame for their distress squarely on the shoulders of people who infantilise them and scream "bigot " at anyone who tries to have a grown up conversation about conflicting rights.
