What a wonderful accolade!

I'm so pleased for her. I know she'll do a phenomenal job - compassionate, kind and wise

Great background, thank you

politicians are, well, political

I think this signals a move from being ‘out’ as GC from an impediment to neutral, or even an advantage….

Yes. There are various things happening lately - some overt, some more subtle - that signal to me a whole lot of politicians frantically making faces at each other and mouthing things across the Commons while still trying really, really hard not to get a target painted on them.

My admiration for women like Joanna Cherry and Rosie Duffield (and various women in the Conservative party) only increases. To stand up in the face of that kind of opposition takes immeasurable strength and integrity.

viques · 21/07/2022 10:30

Excellent news, I think she should be cloned as a matter of national urgency, we need a hundred more of her to spread sanity and reason throughout the land.

Tallisker · 21/07/2022 12:10

Apart from her general fab-ness, the way she pronounces 'Twitter' is just terrific 🥰

VestofAbsurdity · 21/07/2022 12:36

Did we get an answer to what the worries (rage) were about? Is this like that question about what rights don't trans people have that never gets answered?

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 12:56

The right to be their authentic selves exist etc by getting off on scaring women.

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 13:01

The right to continue to be infantilised by people telling them that talking about women's rights is literal violence

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 13:05

The right to remove from medical and common use, those words which describe women but which cannot apply to dick havers.

The right to pretend they give a shit about gender non-conforming women who want to cut their breasts off because they don't match the pornified picture of womanhood they are trying to elevate

Unfortunately it’s the whole suspect “human rights” malarkey that’s got us into this mess in the first place, whether it’s Stonewall or illegal migrants.

VestofAbsurdity · 21/07/2022 13:11

Yes, bellinsurge they won't answer because it would mean saying the quiet bits out loud and when it gets into mainstream public awareness they know the public will not accept their demands, as is beginning to happen.

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 13:17

I now say "trans demands " not "trans rights" because the former is more honest than the latter.

Hopefully Sunak or Truss will pull us out of the ECHR when they become PM and it will put an end to Stonewall's madness.

Twindow · 21/07/2022 13:45

It's nothing to do with the Euopean Court of Human Rights. This trend has come from North America. And personally I'd like to keep what rights I have and am extremely worried about how our government is already removing them. Eg the right to demonstrate and the right to bring a Judicial review claim.

I would genuinely like to know, GoodJanet, what it is that you think unites LGB and T people? What do the first three groups have in common with the latter group?

So would I. LGB I'm fully on board with. Where T and the rest of the fucking alphabetty spaghetti fit in .... not at all clear 🤷‍♀️

Someone must know, surely?

Artichokeleaves · 21/07/2022 14:08

Just to be aware, I have before now received a strike for referring to pasta. Despite pointing out to HQ that I was infact L myself, and felt some entitlement to refer to my own labels as I chose, and to make wry comment that this never ending string of no one really now knows what has become fairly meaningless. Which confirms that it is now purely a political affiliation label with required obeisance required, and does not represent LGBT+ people unless they are of the faith.

I shall not be genuflecting at that particular altar. Hello LGBA.

Pulling us out of the European Court of Human Rights is what would be madness, not Stonewall!
Would seem like such a stupid thing to do, just to curtail rights of a group you don't agree with!
What if they came after your rights next, whether it be if you're lesbian, gay or bi?
Or is it just ok to do that to trans people?;
It won't just stop at the ones you don't agree with, it doesn't exactly work like that.

Tallisker · 21/07/2022 14:21

What rights don't trans people have?

This is really interesting. In order to be elected, you have to get the highest number of votes from other members of the committee (all MPs). The SNP cannot get these type of roles without cross party support.

So the question is, where did support for Cherry to get this role come from? How many votes did she get. The members of the committee should be well aware of her history and legal expertise... She's clearly respected within Parliament to get this role despite the hot air on twitter.

'Joint' in this context means that it is a joint committee of the House of Commons and the House of Lords which scrutinises proposed legislation for compliance with human rights, and conducts inquiries.

The Committee has six MPs and six Members of the Lords, a mixture of Conservative (5), Labour (4), LibDem (1), SNP (1) and crossbench / non-party aligned (1).

Harriet Harman was the chair but is retiring or has retired as an MP. She was formerly a solicitor and the Solicitor General for England and Wales, which is one of the government law officers.

Joanna Cherry's expertise and experience in the law would have obvious appeal - she's a QC and if I remember right, a former minister of justice in the Scottish government.

err what now?

baby with the bathwater spring to mind. can you explain why you think this would be a good thing?

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 15:10

ECHR is nothing to do with Stonewall other than them bleating trans demands are human rights at every opportunity.
They tried to get the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission delisted as our national human rights ombudsman because it dared to say trans demands need to be in balance with women's rights. And those of other protected characteristics in the UK Equality Act.

VestofAbsurdity · 21/07/2022 15:26

just to curtail rights of a group you don't agree with!

What rights are going to be curtailed?

SigourneyHoward · 21/07/2022 15:30

abitofalark Harriet Harman is stepping down as an MP but not until the next election. HH has stepped down as Chair of JCHR because she is now chairing the inquiry into Boris at the privileges committee (because Chris Bryant - previous chair - recused himself. So JC elected Chair of JCHR

Twindow · 21/07/2022 15:31

I very much doubt the SNP members of parliament will have voted for Cherry. She's not exactly flavour of the month with the leadership.

Tallisker · 21/07/2022 14:21

What rights don't trans people have?

WHY is this question never answered?

What rights are in danger / what rights will they lose / what rights don't they already have?

RhannionKPSS · 21/07/2022 16:08

Twindow · 21/07/2022 15:31

I very much doubt the SNP members of parliament will have voted for Cherry. She's not exactly flavour of the month with the leadership.

Jo Cherry is everything Sturgeon can’t be or won’t be. She is a real lawyer, QC, MP & advocate for women & more of a feminist than Sturgeon could ever dream of.
Jo Cherry has earned respect & thanks from many, many women from many political parties & none in Scotland & beyond.
