Penny Mordant as PM - nooooooo...

Genuinely scared now that she might win - looks like she's second behind Rishi Sunak in nominations, and the most popular with Tory membership.

If gender self-ID is passed in law, it's going to be so difficult to repeal. (I don't trust her not to try, despite what she said on Twitter recently).

So also scared now that if she wins, the UK will go the same way re. gender policy as the US, Canada etc. and the UK as a beacon of reason in the world on this issue will be snuffed out forever. (Sounds hyperbolic but think it's near the mark).

How can we campaign to stop this? I've already emailed an appeal to the nearest Tory MP to me about this, but otherwise feel powerless.

Oddly she seems to have some of the same failings as Boris. Inability to master detail, not too diligent, strange relationship with the truth. But less bright, less experienced and less charismatic.

An interesting comparison, Needmoresleep. The continuity candidate. She has been working on building a base within the party for ages so the other similarity that needs to be added is ambition.

I don't really understand the results from the YouGov poll. I read another report that voters shown a photograph of Penny Mordaunt thought it was Adele!

MangyInseam · 15/07/2022 02:29

The person I was speaking saw the ‘trans issue’ as niche, and therefore seemed to consider articles, especially those in the Mail, criticising her history as malicious.

That's interesting, I can see why that might seem like it was the case, though. It's not like newspapers never do that kind of thing.

SpindleInTheWind · 15/07/2022 06:35

That Andrew Pierce article in today’s Mail is excoriating.

Owen Jones has a pop at her in the Guardian, not for her lies about self-ID (I guess he’s saving that one) but over her deceitful statements on Turkey and the UK veto.

(Sorry I can’t link on this phone.)

achillestoes · 15/07/2022 07:12

Maria Miller just appeared on Sky to say Penny Mordaunt said “trans women are women” because that’s the law, and she hasn’t changed her views at all. She also said this issue isn’t important but is so fundamental that it needs to be elevated above politics.

Conflictedunicorn · 15/07/2022 07:28

So is Maria admitting Penny is lying? Wow! She’s just outed PM as a self serving lying cockwomble. Ooops.

They’re going for nothing to see here on R4 - supporter

So no straight answer

Annoying but the debate should throw it out

BridasShieldWall · 15/07/2022 07:51

I think the debate will be interesting. A question will be asked on her beliefs in this area and her answer will be key. I think the Tories can see what a mess this area is causing for Labour and will want to avoid that as it will overshadow any ‘clean slate’ reset and new policies.

An MP supporting PM on Newsnight was spouting a load of rubbish about how only transwomen who had surgery to remove their genitals would be able to access to womens single sex areas. Load of rubbish which reflects a lack of understanding of the issues by a lot of MPs.

PoseyFlump · 15/07/2022 07:58

I've just turned on sky news. I don't know who they were talking to but the first thing I heard was 'PM has a problem with defining what a woman is'.

Needmoresleep · 15/07/2022 08:11

The Mail is laying it on thick. As if they are rattled.

IMO I think Penny needs to make it clear which side of the gender debate she's on.

That appears to depend on who she's talking to, and when.

Penny is on the side of power and expediency. That's not a surprise. It does mean that nobody can trust her on this issue - she clearly is willing to state barefaced lies if she thinks it's in her interests.

Mught be the only thing TRAs and feminists agree on, actually: Penny is a liar.

The most up-voted comments are anti-Frost and pro-Mordaunt.

What poll? I’ve never seen a poll on here.

What would you like the new Prime Minister, with their huge majority in the HoC, to do @Sugerfree?

How about you answer my question ?. I answer yours.

Iliveonahill · 15/07/2022 09:09

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/07/2022 00:22

Misogyny. And it's misogyny that meant they got away with it for so long. And that the victims were neglected/blamed/further victimised by the very people supposed to protect them. See also child sex abuse scandals in religions, coaching, children's homes etc. I'm fucking tired of hearing that "lessons will be/have been learnt".😡

If misogyny had been a Hate Crime, the rapists, child abusers and murderers in Telford would have received more jail time. But its not because the Tories said "No". Why would the government not make the VAWAG evident in the Telford/Rotherham etc a Hate Crime?

Exactly this. Religion, lack of respect, different values and beliefs. Etc etc . It’s a disgrace but it will never be discussed openly because of the racism fear.

I agree with you - but why have you completely failed to mention the religion and cultural beliefs of the perpetrators [deobandi muslim] which is the common denominator. In this country we have a specific problem with Pakistani muslim men predating on vulnerable white girls, in grooming gangs. Encouraged by the authorities. And we're afraid of talking about it.

All political parties, and all politicians - all public figures, with one or two notable exception, run and hide the moment this issue is raised. The best we get is some bland, mealy mouthed crap about "raising awareness" or "lessons must be learned" or one of the other empty, stock phrases they use, which add up to absolutely nothing.

In the same week that the IICSA releases its devastating report into this latest atrocity against vulnerable children, one would expect at least a question at PMQ's, wouldn't they? What did we get? Not a single solitary mention from anywhere in the house, from any party. Not a word, Nothing.

The new Tory leader has at least got to be prepared to put their finger on what the specific problem is. To shy away from doing so do is to put more vulnerable girls and women at risk. I too am fucking tired of hearing that "lessons will be/have been learnt" platitude as well. I'm equally tired of the pathetic cowardice of the entire political / media caste that are still ignoring this, hoping it goes away. The way it looks to me is that the only Tory leadership candidate who looks remotely likely to deal with this head on, is Kemi Badenoch.

I don't wish to be harsh because you clearly see what the problem is. But you mention "religion" - yet you yourself have failed to say which religion.

Confucians', Hindus', Jews, Buddhists and Sikhs are not showing up in street sex grooming gangs everywhere the authorities look [and they're trying desperately hard NOT to look] right across the country, as deobandi muslim men are.

I can't get it to work

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/07/2022 11:00

It's not a Muslim thing, just as it wasn't a Catholic thing.

It's a misogyny thing. Don't for one minute believe the police further victimised and handed victims back to their abusers because they were afraid of racism. They did it because they were paid by the gangs.

I want child and women sexual abuse to end. I want the perpetrators caught, whoever they are. I want victims who go to the police protected, not handed back.

Oh FFS ! What are you talking about "It's not a Muslim thing," Are you serious?

So when The Jay Report concluded in 2004 that 1,400 underage girls, most of them white, aged 11–15, had been sexually abused in Rotherham between '97 and '13 by predominantly British-Pakistani muslims. And concluded that there is "a deep-rooted problem of Pakistani-muslim-heritage perpetrators targeting young white girls". She was misinformed. lying - which is it?

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/07/2022 11:21

I am serious. It's a child trafficking thing. It's a misogyny thing. Any police force that looks the other way or hands victims back to there abusers is a massive part of the problem. Here, its paramilitaries, not Muslims who run this shit.

Is it too much to expect the next PM to tell us what they are going to do about it?

achillestoes · 15/07/2022 11:31

Penny’s on Sky doing “they’re all jealous of me and my polling”.

So the Jay report has it wrong does it?

its paramilitaries, not Muslims who run this shit
WTF are you talking about? Which "paramilitaries"?

The sex grooming gangs operating in Bristol, Rotterdam, Rochdale, Derby, , Peterborough, Newcastle, Oxfordshire, Bradford, Keighley, Banbury, Halifax, Leeds, Birmingham, Norwich, Burney, Glasgow, High Wycombe, Dewsbury and Middlesbrough, Telford etc etc etc etc, all have one common link, in that the grooming gangs are all of south Asian, Pakistani deobandi origin. And that there are specific cultural factors at play' . But nevermind. Baroness Jay is wrong, as is the Report, and it's "not Muslims who run this shit." You really are quite something.
