Penny Mordant as PM - nooooooo...

Genuinely scared now that she might win - looks like she's second behind Rishi Sunak in nominations, and the most popular with Tory membership.

If gender self-ID is passed in law, it's going to be so difficult to repeal. (I don't trust her not to try, despite what she said on Twitter recently).

So also scared now that if she wins, the UK will go the same way re. gender policy as the US, Canada etc. and the UK as a beacon of reason in the world on this issue will be snuffed out forever. (Sounds hyperbolic but think it's near the mark).

How can we campaign to stop this? I've already emailed an appeal to the nearest Tory MP to me about this, but otherwise feel powerless.

Mordaunt is, if you trust the media reporting on it, popular with the grass roots.

If she gets through the MP’s selection process and is one on one with Sunak then she’ll have a good chance of winning.

Her supporters in the Commons are busily trying to deflect any questions on her stance on “trans rights” (never framed correctly as women’s rights), by suggesting that this shouldn’t be an area that is “politicised!”

One female MP who supports her just trotted out (BBC News) the ‘group most at risk of suicide’ mantra as justification for why they shouldn’t be including the “trans rights issue” at all in discussions about the leadership.

’No Debate’ in its most literal sense!

And a handy deflection from the REAL issue which is that Mordaunt appears prepared to lie through her teeth about her policy positions and about what she’s done in the past.

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 11:28

It’s nothing to do with not wanting to fight a culture war. The left are already fighting (and indeed started) the culture war. They just want people to have to choose between two of their candidates so they can win it.

ScrollingLeaves · 14/07/2022 11:56

The thing is that Red Wall people are unlikely to even realise much how women and children’s rights and safety have been eroded by actual governmental trans policies. Their only glimmer may most likely have been from the DM and that is often more about one off instances of crimes involving a trans woman. They would think it is such a joke to say that TWAW that it wouldn’t cross their minds that real laws have been set up to support that.

On a one to one basis involving trans people, though, if it came up, the Red Wall includes very kind people with a naturally generous disposition, and most would behave accordingly. Maybe they will think PM is like this too.

In these very insecure times PM’s video with Captain Tom, NHS rescuers, scenes of the army, navy, and airforce together with British flags and “I vow to thee my country”
will come across as inspiring and reassuring to all.

zanahoria · 14/07/2022 12:04

"Mordaunt is, if you trust the media reporting on it, popular with the grass roots"

Yet TWAW is deeply unpopular among Tory women. Perhaps some have not squared the circle yet.

I think Mordaunt has tried to be all things to all people but this could quickly unravel.

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2022 12:11

Is it? Do you have any evidence for that?

zanahoria · 14/07/2022 12:11

Boris was popular when people believed his bullshit and went because people did not believe it any more.

Penny is another bullshitter. She also has a penchant for cheap publicity stunts like saying 'cock' in Parliament.

Will they get fooled again?

don't think she's confusing anything, she's simply saying that, in her view, some people felt that way, and that's why they opposed SSM.

she (?) is not describing a “feeling” but a belief: that spaces were being invaded. If she believes that other people had that belief, she should be able to explain which spaces they believed that about and she should be able to explain the comparison she chose to draw between those “spaces” and the real, material women’s spaces that are invaded by men under trans ideology.

Otherwise the post is incoherent rambling of the randomly-swap-words-around type so common among transactivists, and yes, it demonstrates extreme confusion and theory of mind failure.

No, she really doesn't need to do that for the purposes of her post. All she said was that there were people who felt that there were people who did feel it was similar. Which was true and anyone who was around them would remember if they paid attention at all. Which people they were isn't really relevant to her point.

Where it may touch them is in schools where their daughters are. Seeing those girls and their friends be exploited by this stuff has scared a lot of people and made them look deeper into it.

I do think her campaign focus is on target, it's what will put appeal to those voters as it is meant to show she understands them in the exact way Labour does not. I think party members will see that and see it as an election winner.

She's not as witty and charming as BJ though and I suspect won't wiggle out of things as easily when it comes down to it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/07/2022 13:07

Surely everyone is now aware that "at least the Conservatives know what a woman is" was a complete and utter lie. Some of them know, some of them don't.

Either way, the Conservatives don't give a shit about women and girls🤷‍♀️

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 13:11

@TooBigForMyBoots

Of course some of them think TWAW. Women on this board know that. They also know that a Labour government would mean a whole front bench of woo-woo.

Redlake · 14/07/2022 13:16

Penny is way out in front of all the others with the popular vote. I think she will be PM. Despite anything she says she is essentially a trans ally.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 14/07/2022 13:16

Try reading that back to yourself!

I agree, insofar as I can decipher. “Which people” is an irrelevant question. It wasn’t asked by anyone.

The question I asked of the other person, please don’t trouble yourself to get involved further, was which spaces.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/07/2022 13:20

The Conservative government front bench is full of woo-woo. From PM Johnson refusing to say that women have a cervix, to Rishi Sunak who in interview refused 6 times to answer the question "what is a woman". 6 times!Shock Doesn't he know? And then there's the ones who think it just doesn't matter like women in general.

Penny Mordaunt is full on TWAW. She was one of the chief architects of Self ID. Wonder what her Conservative front bench will be like?🤔 Maybe she'll find a post for Jamie Wallis.

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 13:25

@TooBigForMyBoots

A lamppost?

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 13:26

And Johnson took his time but he got there in the end.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2022 13:26

Is it? Do you have any evidence for that?

The evidence I can think of is the responses to polls, if broken down the Tories polled are far less in favour of self ID than Labour supporters.

I was kind of hoping for a link. According to a poster on another thread self ID is a concern for 3% of Tory party membership. It’s hardly convincing.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2022 13:34

You can google for a link, if you like, Twitter is down and I don't have a link handy.

Thank you so much. If you want me to believe you it’s kind of incumbent on you to provide the evidence. I’ll assume it’s bollocks if you can’t manage it.

You know lots of Conservatives are in fact women? Some have done a lot of important work on behalf of women.

Political parties in general are made up of lots of people with different personalities, ideas, attitudes. If you expect otherwise you are being very naive.

Sugerfree · 14/07/2022 13:36

amter · 13/07/2022 11:05

I am a swing voter, I was planning on voting tory as this is the most important issue to me. I will not vote for Penny, come on Kemi, I think she is great.

I'm with you on that. Kemi or Suella.

Out of the two, Kemi seems to be the only one feisty enough to stand up to the trans fadists. I haven't been watching the news much these past few days, bits here and there, I was wondering, has Penny been asked by anyone : "can a woman have a penis?"

Add to that, it's the women in the Tory party who seem to be only actual Conservatives.

Christ on a bike, that doesn't matter either, it's totally irrelevant to the point that people felt that it was an imposition.

Do any of them? At PMQ's yesterday not a single word was uttered, from either said, about the 1000 or so vulnerable, young white girls who were routinely tortured and raped by Pakistani muslim men in Telford. The latest Labour run town found to have been encouraging sex trafficking.

NOT A WORD!
