Who the hell in adland thinks insulting or mocking the people who buy your products is a winning strategy?

Can't see what your problem is. Baga Chipz is funny and it's a play on the stage name advertising for McCain

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 28/06/2022 09:45

Ooo that's a mighty fine ratio they've got going on there.

Birdsweepsin · 28/06/2022 09:48

Sigh. Drag is patronising and insulting. It's not funny. These are products aimed at kids. I don't want to explain why a man in a wig is talking about his "knockers" to my 6 year old

Needs another carrot, a really, really, tiny, shrivelled one.

Comefromaway · 28/06/2022 09:49

Don't let your 6 year old watch Drag Race then. For me it was a great way to bond with dd when we watched it via zoom party during lockdown.

I find it funny, you don't so don't watch it.

Moj1t0 · 28/06/2022 09:50

This seems more "go back to the 70s" than "go woke." Still totally cringe, though, and as the chief shopper in our household I'd say it was a grave error of judgement on their part!

Surely the point here isn't "well don't watch it" but "thanks but I won't buy your product." I'm guessing putting people off buying their chips wasn't their intention.

Freysimo · 28/06/2022 09:53

Is this just an on line ad or on telly? Whatever, no thanks, McCain, off my shopping list.

PurpleChairs · 28/06/2022 09:54

Good grief. Another brand to add to my list of 'won't buy that then'.

RoyKentsChestHair · 28/06/2022 09:54

FFS that comes across like one of those ads the teams on The Apprentice make, thinking they’re hilarious but they’re actually just cringe. Offensive misogynistic drivel. Luckily the comments underneath seem to agree.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2022 09:55

If you want to talk about Dragrace start a new thread.

Azerothi · 28/06/2022 09:55

Not really relevant and some will say too extreme but I have reported the ad to the advertising standards agency. Any 'face' including blackface and woman face is unacceptable to me.

RoyKentsChestHair · 28/06/2022 09:56

The only reason I can possible think that they allowed this through is because they know it will get lots of views and comments and then they can withdraw it quietly, thinking “job done, any publicity is good publicity”.

Braggiography · 28/06/2022 09:56

A male creates a figure of a 'woman' out of food, consisting of processed potato face and, what is that, meat for the body parts? Talks about 'knockers' and parking a bus between said meat knockers.

This type of 'humour' used to be sneered at, but because this male is wearing a wig and make up as he makes fun of women's bodies, we are now supposed to see objectification and sexist insults as progressive comedy.

Amazing. I suppose Roy Chubby Brown was unavailable.

Nopetryagain · 28/06/2022 09:58

Would you object to Lily Savage or Dame Edna?

Baga Chipz is a minor celebrity and their name works with the product. I agree that comments about knockers don’t seem appropriate but I suspect even if the content was totally vanilla you would still object to Baga.

achillestoes · 28/06/2022 09:59

I wouldn’t dream of letting my young child watch Drag Race. And McCains is nasty anyway, isn’t it?

Braggiography · 28/06/2022 10:01

5,000 views and 3 likes. This tepid, dreary and offensive shite sticks to a brand like a bad smell.

ProfessorFusspot · 28/06/2022 10:06

I don't really see anything "woke" about it, in either the original or the appropriated version of the term. It's straight-up, old-fashioned misogyny, amusing to the same people who like those postcards from the '70s of men with huge beer bellies at the seaside with two "birds" in thong bikinis hanging off their arms.

I'm surprised it got through internal marketing approvals; it's not (mainly) 99 year old men or 12 year old boys buying frozen chips.

Staynow · 28/06/2022 10:08

Men pretending to be awful caricatures of women?? Women reduced to body parts including 'knockers' 'so big you could park a bus between them'?? I'm missing how any of that could possibly be woke.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 28/06/2022 10:09

It’s so bloody sexist! Who thinks that kind of language is funny? Using terms like knockers and saying you could park a bus between them? Not appropriate for a food advert, especially when using food items aimed at children.

Braggiography · 28/06/2022 10:11

Agree. This is tired old sexist crap, the idea that talking about 'knockers' is edgy or in any way hilarious is so weak.

MiniatureHotdog · 28/06/2022 10:11

Grim. Heartened by alllll the comments pointing out what misogynistic shite it is though!

I have no idea why mccains think a bloke in a dress being offensive about women is going to make me buy their product?

I can't remember the last time I saw either on tv, must be a good ten years which is where they belong, in the past. Right along with blackface and people mimicking black people, insulting them and reducing them to stereotypes. People thought that was funny at the time too, fortunately now we know better. Hopefully you'll catch up soon.

NothingTraLaLa · 28/06/2022 10:12

They’re smiley faces, not chips (or even chipz), anyway.

misses point

Drag is basically woman-face.
