Who the hell in adland thinks insulting or mocking the people who buy your products is a winning strategy?

I'm getting ads for Decathlon everywhere I go because I was pricing up camping equipment yesterday morning.

Birdsweepsin · 03/07/2022 18:16

Just checking how

Posted too soon!

...how Mccains are getting on. And here is an article in adweek.

www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/mccain-pulls-tongue-in-cheek-ad-starring-british-drag-queen-baga-chipz/

"Tongue In Cheek", followed by a "similar" series of complaints received by the ASA about an Adidas

.. what's going on?

Anyway. Adidas ad. Which is not the same at all!

What was the Adidas ad?

Riverlee · 03/07/2022 18:45

Just read the article. Mcain really don’t get. They said innuendo is not good for a product associated with children. Err no, the phrase ‘knockers’ is not good, full stop. It would be equally inappropriate on a product purely for an adult,.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 03/07/2022 18:46

I would be interested in knowing whether the likes of Starbucks’ What's Your Name? and the Gillette’s First Shave ads have resulted in longer term gains as Mr Marketing Wanker thinks.

Or is he thinking about a much longer timeframe?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 03/07/2022 19:09

Statement from McCains: No matter how popular Potato Smiles may be amongst our young adult audience, we recognise this is a product predominantly enjoyed by children. As a result, the video will no longer feature as the campaign continues into July.”

Perhaps you should have remembered this before. But some credit to McCains for admitting it. We had posters on here claiming the product was predominantly enjoyed by young adults, and it wasn't even their company they were defending.

I don’t think even the agency can spin that as a success

KittenKong · 03/07/2022 19:33

I’ve worked with enough agencies - yes they will spin it as a spectacular ‘win’ and those inexperienced executives clientside will agree that yes the emperor does indeed have a beautiful new suit (until the head of sales checks sales figures and hauls bums over the coals).

Riverlee · 03/07/2022 19:44

I for one, chose an own-brand pack of frozen chips, rather than Mcains on my online shop when I put an order in earlier.

Yep. They're hiding behind the children.

Own your sexist bullshit, McCains.
