Oh for pitys sake

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 15:41

There aren't enough swear words available in the world to express my horror and utter disappointment at this result. Even if it was expected due to the make up of the supreme court.

When will women be left alone to make decisions about their bodies without the interference of religion, misogyny, state? Just barbaric and woman-hating.

Mandodari · 24/06/2022 15:41

Lord love the women that can't afford to get private 'help'. It will never touch those who voted to overthrow Roe as they will always be able to buy the way out for their loved ones.

Feministwoman · 24/06/2022 15:43

Disgusting.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 24/06/2022 15:44

Unsurprising and sickening.

So very true. Women are going to have to organise to provide free transport, accommodation, healthcare for women and girls who cannot otherwise afford to travel. But there will always be some women and girls who can't access even charitable support, due to their personal circumstances. Horrific.

Live4weekend · 24/06/2022 15:47

Its scary how a country I so admired growing up has regressed so much.

Scary scary stuff from a country full of extremists.

Evil. I think that's the only way to describe them l, especially considering the ruling yesterday too

Ravenclawdropout · 24/06/2022 15:48

The USA is as big as Western and Eastern Europe combined. Abortion will now return to the 50 states. In Europe there is a wide range of abortion law depending on the will of the population. The USA will now be the same. Many states have already passed law making abortion legally available if Roe was ever overturned. Also Congress can decide to make this federal law once again as these decisions were made by the Supreme Court both times, not by Congress.

BootsAndRoots · 24/06/2022 15:49

No doubt these are the same politicians who are making sure that mentally ill people can continue to have access to military grade assault rifles.

Yup. Pro-life until the minute you're actually born.

Ravenclawdropout · 24/06/2022 15:56

@BootsAndRoots the law courts made this decision not the politicians. The politicians can now introduce a law in Congress to change Federal law. The decision will now return to the 50 US states. Many states already passed law that if Roe was ever revoked their state would automatically give a legal right to abortion.
The USA is huge, as big as all of Europe. The laws in abortion vary by country in Europe, now this will be the same in the USA. Each state's Congress can reflect their local population.

maeveiscurious · 24/06/2022 15:56

When this act came in America found the crime rate dropped and society was more stable. I feel sorry for the women of America but society in general is going to change

Do you think Congress WILL decide to make this federal law once again?

It is not meaningful to compare 'Europe' to the US, seeing as the latter is one country and the former... isn't.

To what extent, do you think, is abortion law decided by 'the will of the population'? I think of the protest pro-choice marches in Poland as one example.

Thanks for that - I didn't realise

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 16:04

@Ravenclawdropout do you think that it is right for women and girls to not have access to abortion on pain of criminal charges, if that is the majority will of their local population as measured by....?

Ravenclawdropout · 24/06/2022 16:07

I live in the USA and am explaining US law and government because there seems to be some confusion regarding that.

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 16:09

I think people understand that large parts of the US are shortly about to, or already have, made abortion illegal for women and girls.

bluelavender · 24/06/2022 16:10

@Ravenclawdropout Decisions on abortion now return to State Government. They can choose whether or not to allow abortions to be legal within that particular state. There is now no overarching Federal right. Imagine if decisions on whether or not a child received an education; or whether rape was a crime just sat with State government and not an overall national law.

Women will be very badly affected by this decision; and a fundamental right to healthcare has been removed

WalrusSubmarine · 24/06/2022 16:12

Ravenclaw - much of Europe DOES offer women safe and legal abortion whereas now much of America now makes abortion illegal and women in some
states cannot even travel interstate to get one because they could still be prosecuted and because of costs of travel and care.

This is not good for women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/06/2022 16:12

We all know that there will be states where abortion will be outlawed.

BrokenToy · 24/06/2022 16:13

They’re coming for contraception, premarital and gay sex, and gay marriage next.

Can someone tell them The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t meant to be a how-to manual?

Roe v Wade overturned
OvaHere · 24/06/2022 16:13

I think we all knew it was coming but pretty devastating all the same.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 24/06/2022 16:14

Horrific.

I didn't say it was good for women. I am just explaining to anyone confused that this was a legal decision.

Politicians are now the ones who should be put under pressure at a state and federal level.

I am off to work now (8:15 am my time).
