We’re likely to hear a lot over the next weeks, months and years from certain quarters about how this is our fault. Our fault for not standing by liberal ‘feminists’, our fault for not being more conciliatory, our fault for insisting our own agenda of having a name for ourselves and our female children.

Let’s be very clear: it’s fucking not.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 24/06/2022 17:54

😨Sending thoughts to the women and girls in America who will be impacted by this. 💐

QuebecBagnet · 24/06/2022 17:54

Unbelievable. Never thought I’d see this.

It is about who has the power in the society, ultimately, or that is my interpretation. The idea is that men are citizens and have the right to defend themselves and what is theirs, and that women and children belong to that 'theirs'. Women don't have the right to control their fertility. That belongs to their husbands and parents and their churches etc.

Also, different US states are really like very different European countries in terms of ruling values. Some are like Malta or Albania, some are like Scandinavian countries, when it comes to women's rights. Most indicators of women's opportunities show big differences between the states which vote for Republicans and the states which vote for Democrats. The United States is much more like the continent of Europe (with bits of other continents tossed in) than it is like a country in Europe.

ThickCutSteakChips · 24/06/2022 17:31

America really is a shithole country isn't it? So pro-life that they are happy to see primary school kids massacres in their classrooms. Fuck them.

Also, I know their political system is completely different to ours, but I don't really get the point of having a 'President' when the current one is pro-abortion rights and pro-gun control, and there is seemingly absolutely fuck all he can do about either issue.

Um, thanks for your support on this dark day... 🙄

FYI most Americans support a woman's right to choose. Our political system is deeply broken, but "fuck us," right?

Especially the US feminists likely to be reading Mumsnet FWR. It's one thing to have gender believers constantly (and completely falsely) accusing us of being Trump-voting, gun-toting, anti-abortion evangelical Christians, but it feels worse to get painted with that brush by women ostensibly on our side.

AthenaWhite · 24/06/2022 17:57

Women's rights, which we've had for hardly any time at all, are being rowed back across the globe. So utterly depressing.😞

motogirl · 24/06/2022 18:01

So sorry for American women who can't afford/logistically can't cross state lines. My friend (in a liberal state) is part of an organisation to fund transport and provide accommodation but it's not enough

StillWeRise · 24/06/2022 18:01

So, to any of our sisters in the US, how can we best support you? I mean, I've signed the letter to Liz Truss, which is a start but I don't have a huge amount of faith in what that will acheive.

MarshaBradyo · 24/06/2022 18:05

This is difficult to see

It must be even harder in the US if it’s not what you want either

So very, very angry.

All sides of the political spectrum, shitting on women. One side can't even name us, is now effectively taking away title IX in favour of any male who feels like it. Taking away everything women have fought for and handing it over to men. The other sees women as second class, less than, who don't even deserve bodily autonomy.

I've never known such a time like it. Why? Why do they all hate us, no spaces, no protections, no opportunities, no language, no voice Sad

Well said. This will be weaponised by men who don't give a fuck about women in any sense. Women are caught between the awful men on the left and the awful men on the right.

I also can't believe this has happened under a Democratic administration. I don't really understand the court system there, would be grateful for an explanation of how it works.

It's time for UK feminists to make absolutely clear who and what they support.

If that means Posie Parker is no longer the golden girl then good.

She may be an effective campaigner but you could say the same for Nigel Farage.

Kerrrmieee · 24/06/2022 18:26

I'll hug my 13 year old daughter harder tonight knowing that she has rights over her own body.

This is truly backward, cruel and injust!

ResisterRex · 24/06/2022 18:28

We need a proper source for the possible Posie quote.

I'm unsure if asking Truss to - effectively - meddle in US politics is a good idea. I'm sure there was more than a degree of suspicion that responses to our GRA consultation came from outside the UK en masse for example, which wasn't welcome.

However, the BPAS line about asking her to "commit to protecting UK funding for reproductive health and rights programmes globally" seems sensible, not least because it's UK money.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/06/2022 18:30

It's time for UK feminists to make absolutely clear who and what they support.

What I support are women's rights to participate in public life, have equality of opportunity, freedom from oppression and basic human respect and dignity. We live in a structurally misogynistic world though and I don't understand how people can't see it's all part of a whole. Dehumanising women and girls, and dismissing us as people with needs. It's not one-sided right/left, that's deeply facile. I despair.

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 18:34

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Also well said!

Figgygal · 24/06/2022 18:34

So they ban abortion to "protect children" but not guns
Fucked up country im glad i dont live in
Disgusting

Because we live in a structurally misogynistic patriarchal society. Men can dismiss women without a second thought.

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 18:36

Lots of people in Stonewall’s mentions telling them to sit down. Rightly so.

Floisme · 24/06/2022 18:37

I can't explain it but I'd like to add a 2nd question, which is why did the Democrats never seem to try to secure the Roe vs Wade ruling on a federal basis?
Delphinium20 (apologies if I've mispelt her name) has explained it to me at least once but I still don't really understand. My conclusion - rightly or wrongly - is that it suited the Democrats to keep women fearful. I would not trust either party further than I could spit them, which is why it feels so hopeless.

MarshaBradyo · 24/06/2022 18:39

Erasure of women and their rights comes from both sides.

Here we are fighting back finally against the trans agenda and re establishing our rights, but it’s hard and slow. I massively fear a reversal of all that has changed so far and more.

I’ll have to seek solace here if it happens (due to next election) because it will be devastating

At the same time I fear the far right fundamentalists and abortion removed, but I believe they are more prevalent in US

Because they're idiots who expected their base to come out in force to make sure this situation never came about and it was never a priority when Obama had control of both houses.

Basically five decades to enshrine this in law and they fucked it up. Pretty hilarious that people keep voting for the Dems.

I'll give the Republicans this: they know how to actually deliver things to their base.

MarshaBradyo · 24/06/2022 18:45

I feel like Trump left a bag of steaming poop at Biden’s door and it’s just been stepped on

And Biden is powerless which is amazing for the US President
