Today is very different to pre-Roe & Wade, in that now most abortions can be by pill. If you're in a State which allows abortion, can you be prosecuted for sending pills to a state that bans abortion? I'm thinking of practical ways to help whilst this shit is in place ..

Nordensost · 24/06/2022 19:10

Left wing men come along telling us that men are women too, so we need to differentiate ourselves by calling ourselves by our bodily functions (menstruators, chest feeders).

Right wing men come along and take away our rights to bodily autonomy, with the power to imprison us if they do wish

The hatred from men from the left and rights is crushing. This must be one of the biggest fights women have had to battle since the suffrage

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 19:13

@FemmeNatal does the wording matter to the sentiments being expressed here? The decision to overturn Roe v Wade means that many states will now enact total or near total bans on abortion. Missouri has already done so. So abortion is being banned in the US. People understand it's not across all states, but it may be up to half of them, and then there will be pressure on the remaining states too.

I was just correcting a factual error, the Supreme Court has not outlawed abortion; it has returned the decision to the states. That’s where the argument now has to be made.

Floisme · 24/06/2022 19:16

Thank you GrinitchSpinach - that article you linked looks very interesting.
Jeez, the right scare the crap out of me but, the more I see of the modern left, the more I despise them.

Slothtoes · 24/06/2022 19:17

You can only do early abortions by pill and even those need medical supervision on call. Women will die because they are too scared to get medical help when they need it and it’s illegal.

For those of us whose political understanding of the US is from coverage of elections and TV dramas, is this where women's organisations and others start telling people to call their congressman, write to them, and go and see them?

I think so, yes. Several states already had laws on the books that were triggered by this decision, and others are now likely to move to ban abortion. It’s the state legislatures that have to be lobbied.

zafferana · 24/06/2022 19:20

There are 10 other states with 'trigger laws' expected to be enacted in the coming days to ban abortion:

Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and West Virginia

GrinitchSpinach · 24/06/2022 19:28

On how UK women can help:

Definitely donate to the networks that are springing up to help women and girls in need. Beyond that, I'm not sure there's much you can do. The US needs to go through a real reckoning (again) with widespread misogyny.

Oh, except I will add that it would be great if while American feminists are fighting misogyny on two major fronts, the minority of you who engage in it currently could try to hold back sometimes on friendly fire of the "fuck them" variety.

As a US feminist, a woman of childbearing age, and a mother of daughters, I really appreciate all the actually supportive comments.

For US women:

I think we should take inspiration and tactics from our Irish sisters' recent victory on this front. They were very effective in persuading men, even men from conservative religious backgrounds, that not only was the right to choose a right, but that it was important and urgent. Many American men will say they are pro-choice, but so far have not lifted their littlest finger to guarantee that right in law for women and girls.

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 19:29

If I lived in one of those states I would be organising a total sex and marriage ban, effective immediately. No reproductive autonomy, no reproduction.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/06/2022 19:30

Natasha Chart wrote an interesting piece about this at 4W recently:

Thank you, really interesting.

JanisMoplin · 24/06/2022 19:31

Marking to read as the AIBU thread is now awash with pro-birthers arguing for the rights of fetuses. I am hoping this board is pro-choice.

Misstache · 24/06/2022 19:32

That essay by Chart blaming Sanders and progressives is ridiculous, especially given that she was the one taking Heritage Foundation money. Wasn’t it WoLF who gave the “what is a woman” question to Republicans to attempt to sabotage the confirmation of a liberal pro-abortion justice? It’s not Sanders supporters who got in bed with and campaigned beside the pro lifers, it’s her, not BLM or critical race theory or anything else she tries to blame in that article. The audacity. Trying to shift responsibility off the right wing who actually did this to the people who actually have spent decades supporting abortion is DARVO at its finest. The evangelical Christian Right is to blame. If she can’t acknowledge that and needs to “own the libs” to feel better that’s on her but I’m not buying it.

JanisMoplin · 24/06/2022 19:34

I read that Clarence Thomas has called for the Court to overturn the right to contraception! ( as well as same sex marriage and privacy in the bedroom; not sure what that last means) Is this accurate, American MNers?

Ginajo · 24/06/2022 19:34

I'm in my 50s. I don't feel old or think I'm old but increasingly i cant believe what's happening in our world. This is such a step backwards. How can this be happening? Today I've read about someone being arrested for possible organ harvesting. We have a PM who lies and there are people who think its ok. The world I know has gone mad. This is truly truly shocking.

FOJN · 24/06/2022 19:35

SunniDelite · 24/06/2022 18:49

Not long ago we were praising Matt Walsh's documentary about gender ideology. Now look😨No friend to women....

His documentary was very good. His views on abortion and more specifically the gleeful way he uses misogynistic insults to refer to pro choice women make him a cunt in my opinion. I never thought he was a friend to women but his documentary was helpful in raising awareness about gender ideology.

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 19:35

‘I am hoping this board is pro-choice.’

We lean that way, yes.

It might surprise some posters but I’m actually religiously opposed to abortion unless the pregnancy is a threat to the life of well-being of the mother. I think a pregnancy is a human life. But the difference between me and a religious fundamentalist is that I know that’s my decision to make. People can’t be coerced into sharing someone else’s religious beliefs, and their bodies can’t be used as incubators (they belong to them absolutely).

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 19:36

‘I read that Clarence Thomas has called for the Court to overturn the right to contraception!’

Yes. But I bet that’s just the contraceptive pill, not condoms. We wouldn’t want any men exposing themselves to STDs or unwanted pregnancies.

Misstache · 24/06/2022 19:38

And not interracial marriage, because THAT ruling allowed HIM to marry a white woman!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/06/2022 19:38

who actually did this to the people who actually have spent decades supporting abortion

But they haven't, if what she says about Obama etc is correct. She says that the government left it vulnerable. Can you confirm that what she described happening isn't true, please, and explain what did happen within the Democrats?

JanisMoplin · 24/06/2022 19:40

Here's what Clarence Thomas is saying. It is chilling even if the others were not . in agreement. And yes, of course it will be the pill.

achillestoes · 24/06/2022 19:42

After contraception they’ll target the right to say no within marriage, then the right to say no to marriage. Is there anything in the Constitution to stop that?

Floisme · 24/06/2022 19:43

Ok noted and thanks. In that case could you have a go at answering the question Grinitch was responding to, which was: why did the Democrats never seem to try to secure the Roe vs Wade ruling on a federal basis?

I'm interested in all opinions
