Gervais is on The One Show about now. Someone please tell me how it went. I am not in the UK.

They talked about why he enjoys comedy and how he approaches taboo subjects. Focussed on his introduction to the piece which talked about and illustrated irony. There is lots of taboo in the show to be fair and they didn't specify any particular bit. Comments read out at the end about the show were all positive.

now EI has decided he’s actually woman when he wears a dress “girl mode” not so much…

I saw EI today, we were walking towards each other so couldn’t avoid looking, he had the highest stilettos on, full make up and extremely tight clingy leggings- everything was there for all to see. 🤮

How Ricky managed to get so much into such a short time is just genius.

Artichokeleaves · 24/05/2022 20:46

He says absolutely nothing that is not absolutely on message. He makes no commentary on it. He just says what they say. Word for word.

The fact that the audience fall about laughing on hearing it is the point. And the source of the rage.

I wonder how he deals with the cognitive dissonance of saying for all those years “it’s not a woman’s dress, it’s mine” and now for some reason saying he’s a woman.

I love his comedy, and he’s done very good work for charity, but that really does make me unhappy to see.

Oh that is truly beautiful batshittery 😂

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 24/05/2022 20:58

Going to watch later, having a titter at the activists meltdowns on twitter though, also 🙄at the multiple "hey guys look we have James Acaster, he's soooo much better and sooooo much funnier ner ner ner nerrrr" posts and putting up what I assume is a picture form of that clip where calling someone a "brave little cis boy" appears to be the comedy gold punchline of the whole sorry piece. Oh yes, très hilare 😒

WouldBeGood · 24/05/2022 21:01

The genius of it is that he just says what they say

Its going to be very interesting to see which UK comedians speak up about this show considering the vast majority of the ones I would consider woke said nothing about the Jimmy Carr gypsy controversy. I would expect it was because they want to be on tv shows that Carr hosts and denouncing Ricky Gervais does not have a similar cost.

ResisterRex · 24/05/2022 21:39

I watched it. It was fucking fantastic. He gives no fucks. You can tell it's good by the number of monitors that have arrived 😃

2Rebecca · 24/05/2022 21:43

I can be a bit meh about Gervais but this is making me laugh more than a lot recently. It makes you realise how wimpy comedy has become recently

HandbagsnGladrags · 24/05/2022 21:44

We just watched it too - bloody funny. Had me crying with laughter.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 24/05/2022 21:50

I don't get the blanket problem with "punching down". Of course there are times when people have mocked minority groups or less-privileged groups in a way that is unacceptable.

These groups can't be totally untouchable though. To pick a minority group that I'm part of, people with coeliac disease have physical symptoms to deal with, have to spend more of their income on food, are restricted in what events they can fully participate in, and often struggle against a general perception that their dietary needs aren't that big a deal or that they're just looking for attention.

But if a group of people, including a few coeliacs and some people with other gluten intolerance but also allies and some people who feel a bit bloated if they eat an entire baguette, were to go round demanding that everyone must be aware all the time of everything's gluten-containing status, and that all people who say they feel they have a gluten intolerance must be given free food, and that all restaurants must be able to supply guaranteed gluten-free food even if they're a branch of Wheaty McRyebread's Gluterrific Bread 'n' Beer Emporium — and yelling that not doing these things means you're literally murdering coeliacs — then why shouldn't people joke about that and mock it?

That's what struck me. Rest of show may be different, but RG is pointing out the insanity of the language, the aggression and the misogyny, not mocking actual trans people.

They won't make the distinction, of course.

Could it not be argued that the only thing that distinguishes the trans / TRA community from the rest of us is their belief, and by attacking the belief you are literally attacking everything that makes them special?

Thank you so much for posting the link, it's funnier than RG (sorry Ricky), I'm crying with laughter. The guy who breaks the sign and then shouts "he's got a weapon" gets me every time.

MsFogi · 24/05/2022 22:07

It is a bloody marvel - RG totally 'gets' it right through to mentioning 'dinosaurs'

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 24/05/2022 22:09

Datun · 24/05/2022 20:21

That skit has been played out in real life on Twitter, over and over.

Who hasn't seen women writing long paragraphs about sex offenders in female prisons, and saying his penis, and then being jumped on my TRAs at the end, saying her penis, her penis, you bigot!

All very deliberately deadly serious and intimidating.

And now Gervais has just blown a fucking massive hole through the batshittery.

The TRA juxtaposition of utterly focusing on the pronouns, and completely ignoring the crimes, is what makes it absolutely ripe for a massive piss take.

And mocking things robs them of their power.

Something that Gervais knows only too well.

Its said in the media, too. I remember Matthew Wright when he was on channel 5 talking over a women reviewing a news story about a rapist. He kept shouting she and her every time she talked about the rapist.

It's not just TRA hell bent on intimidating women who do it, tv presenters hell bent on intimidating women do it, too.

The “He’s got a weapon” calls are funny until you realise they’re in America and it could easily end with the man with a broken stick being shot by the police

Sleepyquest · 24/05/2022 22:18

It was great!

Mollyollydolly · 24/05/2022 22:25

I love him. And when everyone is pissing themselves laughing at how ridiculous your ridiculous mantras are, well you've lost haven't you. Emperor's New Clothes innit.
