NCS will put my child into a "self-identified gendered accommodation"

Hi. First time posting here but I've got two children who have introduced me to the world of gender ideology. DD desisted, DS going through it right now. Wondering what I can say to the NCS safeguarding lead about the above.

Background is that DS is going this summer to a 2w course, the first of which is residential, and I know he's applied as "female gender" (self-diagnosed as GD and not on any medication). I raised concerns about the dorm arrangement in the NCS parent survey. The service provider called me and said:

"In line with government guidelines, we will allow the young people to self-ID and they will be put into whichever dorm they feel comfortable in. They'll be supervised at all times".

When I questioned whether they didn't have any safeguarding concerns about this, they said they'll get the NCS safeguarding lead to call me.

I'll ask for their risk assessment, and have studied the Equality Act... but has anyone else dealt with NCS on this issue before? How can they possibly think it's OK to let an entirely biological 16YO boy be in a girls dorm?

I would ask for a copy of 'the government guidelines'. Who are NCS?

Unwantedgift · 18/04/2022 14:51

National Citizen Service. A massive government-funded charity for young people to do activities.
Yes I'll ask. I can't yet find anything that proves the non-existence of such guidelines...

Not what you asked, but NCS used to be 4wks. 1wk residential away at an activity centre, 1wk residential in uni/college halls and then 2wks locally working on their community project.

As PP said, I would ask for a copy of the guidelines.

Unwantedgift · 18/04/2022 15:01

Thanks. Our local ones this year at least are only 2w long.

Yes, government guidelines are the first place to look. Then I would be quickly contacting someone like Baroness Nicholson to have those guidelines questioned.

Floisme · 18/04/2022 15:09

Who is the service provider? It might be government funded but I assume it'll have been sub-contracted.

Unwantedgift · 18/04/2022 15:13

Yes it's a local football club. Only started doing NCS last year.

Absolutely not okay. How are they intending to safeguard the dignity and privacy of female students? How are they intending to prevent sexual activity? Supervised at all times by female members of staff, or self-identifying members of staff?

At 18 my kids can sleep mixed sex without me being there. Before then, no.

tabbycatstripy · 18/04/2022 15:16

(I’d be concerned for his privacy as well but this is his choice at play.)

user1471596980 · 18/04/2022 15:24

I'd actually be concerned with the statement that they'll be supervised at all times. Even while they sleep ?

Thanks. I'm not worried about that either. The 15/16yo girls and their parents need to know that their NCS accommodation isn't single sex at all.

Possibly a man who self identifies as a woman...
roarfeckingroarr · 18/04/2022 15:32

I used to work for NCS, it's woke AF. Not surprised by this.

whenwilliwillibefamous · 18/04/2022 15:33

Even in the 80s it used to be a thing that lesbians would occasionally/absent-mindedly sleep with male friends and forget that contraception was needed and conceive - daft to assume that a similar phenomenon would never be seen in this scenario (particularly as teenagers have no sense at the best of times).

whenwilliwillibefamous · 18/04/2022 15:34

(Obviously not often but I knew at least one person this happened to)

CookieMumsters · 18/04/2022 15:34

I would want to know

  1. Which gov guidelines
  2. Supervised at ALL times? All night?
  3. Are they providing access to contraception?

Yes they do and the fact that neither the NCS nor your son have any respect or consideration for the privacy and dignity of their daughters let alone their safety.

Artichokeleaves · 18/04/2022 15:36

I remember a MNetter a few years back who worked in university HoR accommodation and was extremely concerned that they were supposed to allocate TW on TW request to share rooms with female students without the female student being informed of what they were being set up for.

Safe Schools Alliance might also be a useful resource.

titchy · 18/04/2022 15:37

I wonder what they'd say if you told them your child was sexually active and had boasted amongst friends about changing identity in order to have sex with or take photos of girls.... (obvs I'm not suggesting this is the case, but if this was spelled out I wonder if the Penny would drop at all?)

Yes, that is why we want to see the actual 'government' guidelines.

VestofAbsurdity · 18/04/2022 15:39

Self-Id is not law in England and no-one under the age of 18 can have a GRC which gives them the legal fiction of changing their sex even those who have that piece of paper can be legally barred from access to single sex spaces of the opposite sex to them as confirmed by the EHRC.

MadameKali · 18/04/2022 15:41

DD did NCS last year. The residential was cancelled at the last minute due to Covid but I seemed to think that the provider in our area asked how the kids identified but that accommodation would be single sex.

I posted about it at the time but their safeguarding was shocking in other ways.

user75 · 18/04/2022 15:46

DS left NCS on the first day in 2019 as there was a self appointed trans boy in his room that was in a sexual relationship with another boy in the dorm - they had applied together and were at the same school. I never got anywhere by complaining

user75 · 18/04/2022 15:46

I'm in West Yorkshire btw
