@NoToLandfill

I was at the event where Liane is photographed in front of the tra protestors. They were a bunch of shouty teenage girls from what I could see. Really intimidating though. Liane really confused them. Like they just couldn't get their heads around what she was all about.
Probably because as queer identifying little blue hairs they have never met an actual lesbian.

Shit, this get together is on the front page of the Times? After the Daily Mail already covered it?
That shows that the Times knows the Mail is looking like the GC paper of choice and the Times are trying to chase that readership. Excellent.

That shows that each papers recognises a grassroots political movement when they see it and that they recognise the potential for huge public support, the campaign aim has. Thank goodness. Relief. Really does feel tide is slowly turning away from #nodebate.

I think the Respect my Sex campaign is such a brilliant idea and will be supporting it at elections to come for however long I am going to be voting in my lifetime. At the last GE I wrote to some of the candidates raising some key pro-women issues and got nothing back. Very happy that at least now there’s a banner for these issue and a visible campaign which should make candidates take it a lot more seriously. Still have a long long way to go with the already-elected politicians but that’s another matter. This is a really important and welcome campaign and I’m so grateful for everyone who organised it and takes part in it.

PurgatoryofPotholes thank you for your excellent, insightful posts.

My thoughts exactly!

beastlyslumber · 12/04/2022 08:52

This is joyful.

I doubt anyone invited would turn it down though. I mean, what wouldn't you cancel to go to this?!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 12/04/2022 08:52

quite literal embarrassment of TRAs with vastly over-inflated ideas of their intelligence

Both this and the discussion of platonic forms prompt me to link to a thread about Donna Zuckerberg's realisation about the resurgence of interest in Greek philosophy:

Donna Zuckerberg: ‘Social media has elevated misogyny to new levels of violence’

In the summer of 2015, she noticed an unprecedented level of traffic towards a piece entitled “Why is stoicism having a cultural moment?” and went down a rabbit hole to determine why. The results stunned her: men – or rather, misogynists – were using an armchair enthusiasm for the classics to justify manifestos of hate against women. The results were spreading online under a pseudo-intellectual guise, twisting ancient world philosophy to buttress a contemporary hatred of feminism. And it wasn’t a one-off.
...
But in the case of stoicism’s sudden revival, Zuckerberg found that an active corner of Reddit was applying Hellenistic philosophy to explain the pain and hardship white western men were suffering in the 21st century. Except these men didn’t consider themselves angry – they considered themselves oppressed.

“The ancient world was deeply misogynistic – it was a time when there was no word for rape, feminism did not exist and women’s actions were determined by male relatives,” says Zuckerberg. But now the classical texts are being “distorted and stripped of context” online to lend gravitas to campaigns of misogyny and white supremacy. Not only is it toxic but, as Zuckerberg calmly outlines in her new book, Not All Dead White Men , it is deeply dangerous.

@Rainbowshit

Can't sleep so just scrolling through some of the reactions to these pictures. It's absolutely astonishing the rage over a picture of women enjoying each other's company.

Also the stark homophobia of calling lesbians not "performing femininity" men. The confusion that they don't identify as men.

How can people not see how regressive this movement is?

This.

It's really quite funny isn't it?

The whole concept of feminism (and Suffrage for those currently trying that identity on) was that female humans can look any way and act any way regardless of their biology. Being female puts no restrictions on them. And whatever they do they are still female.

Watching the meltdown when females just female on without obediently getting into the political boxes and labels and costumes is really quite entertaining. And yes, the homophobia is off the scale and so is the sexism.

nzborn · 12/04/2022 09:14

Absolutely, but they have all paid a high price to be there.

JoodyBlue · 12/04/2022 09:31

Love this thread. I agree that the concept of feminism was that women can look and act in a self determined way, as people in our own right. This is the ideal. The material reality though is weaker bodies, capable of child bearing. Younger generations have been able to ignore this through the easy access to contraception. Whereas women of my generation were still conscious always of their fertility as a means to restrict and tie down - we are all tied down by love to some extent.

The pharma industry has played a massive part in enabling humans to overlook their animal nature. It controlled fertility. This is almost the next step, as Lavery said in the WH piece, assuming that changing body chemistry confers womanhood. It is a huge deceit. Female people are now in the crazy position of having to argue for the reality of our animal nature. Ours and mens. This is a fight we can't afford to lose. It seems huge and existential to me.

Nnique · 12/04/2022 09:34

It certainly is huge and existential.

It goes far above and beyond merely (and I don’t mean that dismissively by any means!) rights and protections for women and children.

This is hugely damaging for all of humankind, on every level right from basic, immutable biological fact, to the loftiest philosophical considerations.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/04/2022 09:36

What a great start to the day - front page on the Times - almost universally supportive comments, excellent and very lengthy article in the Mail (with individual photos of most of the women) fantastic thread on here with Greek philosophy from PurgatoryofPotholes and EmbarrassingHadrosaurus

#nodebate is officially deceased. We may not have been invited but Flowers and Cake and Wine to every viper out there

AryaStarkWolf · 12/04/2022 09:43

Ugh me too, was thinking the exact same thing!

JoodyBlue · 12/04/2022 09:44

@Nnique yes. I remember back to the time cosmetic surgery began to emerge as something accessible to anyone, regardless of therpeutic or reconstructive need. It seemed to me then (and I was quite young) that is was starting down a path that would lead somewhere thorny. Still think that.....

We need only look at the horrific way that the west treats animals and the way some regimes do the same with human beings, to understand the need to be very clear and very wary of interventions that are unnecessary for health, but instead serve to benefit others. It IS all part of a bigger story.

Another hot TRA take is "JK Rowling said she would march with trans people but she went to this lunch instead of to an anti conversion therapy protest". Yes, that was probably before she received all those rape and death threats...

Jeez, imagine not wanting to go on a march with people holding signs saying they want to kill you. I'm shocked.
Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 12/04/2022 10:45

Yep. The only version of 'womanhood' they can attain is, by necessity, a one dimensional facsimile. And they're desperate for that to remain the blueprint. Women not adhering to it are spoiling the illusion.

This absolutely nails it!!!
