I can already see Grace pulling out for their “safety”. Especially if all the slander of Helen Joyce doesn’t result in her taking legal action.

@PermanentTemporary

This sort of stuff is largely about publicity. I don't know if it's the sort of publicity that's helpful. I'm reminded of the Battle of the Sexes tennis match between Bobby Whatsisame and Billie Jean King in about 1973 (I'll look it up in a minute!) Agreed that getting at GL on twitter is silly.
Bobby Riggs?

Riggs also played Margaret Court.

Early 1990s saw a match between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova.

PermanentTemporary · 21/02/2022 12:28

Thanks to you @EmbarrassingHadrosaurus I've just read about all those matches. Males me think of the different public stances King and Navratilova have taken on the issue of transwomen in women's sport.

PermanentTemporary · 21/02/2022 12:28

Makes not males Confused

RoyalCorgi · 21/02/2022 12:55

The difficulty is that it's not an equal match. We all know that Helen Joyce will wipe the floor with Lavery: she has more brains in her little finger than Lavery does in Lavery's entire head. Plus Helen is palpably a decent, reasonable, thoughtful and humane person whereas Lavery...[scrabbles about to think of something that won't get me deleted]...well, Lavery isn't.

So obviously Lavery will try to wriggle out of it. In an ideal world, we'd have a more equally matched contest, but I don't think that's possible. Every prominent trans activist I can think of is either dimwitted or ghastly, and in most cases both.

PermanentTemporary · 21/02/2022 13:00

Another interesting debate would be with someone like Sophie Wilson but I'd imagine Sophie earns too much to bother and also wouldn't be interested. Better perhaps Sophie-Grace Chapell who's more publicly engaged.

Anyway, needs must. GL's great saving grace is a real sense of humour. I can imagine that the two speakers might get on pretty well on a personal level.

Gumbomambo · 21/02/2022 15:37

Well clever old Grace has managed to get suspended from Twitter, I’m sure they will say it was an unwarranted pile on that got them to reply inappropriately…not them and their ex queer girlfriend Laurie Penny calling Helen a bloody facist.

This is going well...

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/02/2022 15:50

I'm fascinated by academics having temper tantrums on twitter.

It's the opposite of what I thought academia was about.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 21/02/2022 15:52

Possible causes of the suspension

Gumbomambo · 21/02/2022 15:57

Have they been at the crack pipe? Helen Joyce a facist and wishing the Queen dies? Good God! Maybe the extra activity on their timeline went to their lady brain and caused a swelling?

PermanentTemporary · 21/02/2022 15:57

Oh well, the sense of humour isn't really holding up it seems.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 21/02/2022 15:58

Wow.

Grace is British, I think?

Can you get done for treason if you live in cloud cuckoo land America?

bishophaha · 21/02/2022 15:58

"Replying to: ukhomeoffice" haha what

Anyway, if any actual debate takes place, I'm here for it.

DomesticatedZombie · 21/02/2022 16:02

'A British citizen can be deprived of his citizenship if he shows disloyalty to the state'

Admittedly, the case described involves a terrorist who left the UK to join Isis, not some shitposter on Twitter.

Scraggythang · 21/02/2022 16:04

Well, a Twitter suspension will give him some more time behind the scenes to find a good excuse if wriggling out of this.

I wonder if it was accidentally on purpose.

DomesticatedZombie · 21/02/2022 16:04

Alexa: show me ways to avoid taking part in the debate I specifically asked for, without explicitly saying I've bricked it.

Yikes

These people are actual twerps aren’t they? Academia seems to have morphed into a 1990s episode of Home And Away

DomesticatedZombie · 21/02/2022 16:06

The answer of course: insult the Queen and set fire to the Internet.

On of the few things (I think) the otherwise egregious Henry Kissinger said that I agree with is that academic cat fights are so vicious is because the stakes are so small.

Or maybe they're trying new, innovative ways to get the debate cancelled
HenriettaTriceratops · 21/02/2022 17:41

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! If it's real....
