Perfect from Helen. The comparison is striking. How the hell do these people manage to hold down jobs (or get appointed in the first place)? And how the hell do they get to be considered as experts in any shape or form? Beggars belief.

I had a visit to the U of Michigan many years ago and saw how junior lecturers and hourly-paid lecturers were called 'Professors'.

I'm fascinated by academics having temper tantrums on twitter. It's the opposite of what I thought academia was about.

I've seen (male, obvs) colleagues nearly come to blows over the wording of an exam question. There is no petty depth to which many academics can't sink, particularly the older, more senior, male ones.

Exactly! The genesis was a Twitter spat in which feminists bemoaned that no prominent transactivist will ever debate the clash of trans rights and womens rights with us. And yes, even if you think that there is no clash, it’s still entirely legitimate to take part in a debate in order to explain why. Lavery stepped up to disprove that once and for all by debating Helen Joyce, in order to own all those terrible lying t*rfs and prove that it’s possible to openly debate like adults. Lavery positioned themselves as the champion, to fly the flag and change the conversation.

Only…it’s still not, because goddam it, Helen cutted up the pear!

Well, I would apologise for posting this thread because the withdrawal by GL was inevitable, though optimistically I dared to hope.
