Not only is Lia the champion, but Lia set a new pool record. Lia was, I believe, 7 seconds faster than Catherine Buroker.

If you watch the video it looks like Lia is not even trying particularly hard.

I don’t know if it was the same film I watched, but the commentator even mentioned the lack of leg movement compared with the women.

Meanwhile, a 15 year old girl is being put through the wringer over a drug test...

Puts this into perspective, doesn’t it.
Lookingforatimeslip · 18/02/2022 09:34

This makes me so so angry!

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/02/2022 09:35
Angry

It's going to take more things like this happening to make people finally wake up and realise what is going on.

How can anyone defend such cheating?

I know. Every time I read about her I think are we supposed to be outraged about this when men are colonising women's sports and cheating their way to medals and records quite openly?

*Obviously concerns for the welfare of teen ice skaters still applies but re the cheating aspect as far as I'm concerned sports orgs like the IOC can fuck off.

Ataraxian · 18/02/2022 09:55

I wonder how long before an over ambitious parent / coach takes a promising girl athlete and puts here on testosterone at puberty so she will have a larger frame / muscle mass and then stop after a few years so she can compete as an adult / older teen.

Is it though? The very first man taking a woman's place/medal/record should have ended this but it hasn't. Women being physically beaten by men in MMA should have ended it but it didn't. Why not?

Not having a go at you btw but just wondering is there any sporting atrocity now that won't be hand waved away because 'inclusion'?

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 18/02/2022 10:02

It's an absolute travesty.

Congratulations to Catherine Buroker. Rightful winner!!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/02/2022 10:03

But apparently all the girls think this is wonderful, its just women who have no idea about sport complaining...

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 18/02/2022 10:12

I'm surprised the Penn Swim twitter account didn't lock the tweet regarding the win. They are getting an absolute pasting in the replies and rightfully so! Not sure whether it was an oversight but over 3K replies later they still haven't locked it, not that I think they will actually read or respond to anything. More like past caring what people say (like they ever did) because they've made their position clear and are pushing forward in support of a cheat.

MangoSeason · 18/02/2022 10:14

Almost every tweet is congratulating Catherine Buroker for her win. Because she was the winner.

WeeBisom · 18/02/2022 11:12

It’s not exactly a big surprise is it? I would absolutely smash my local primary school’s sports day, but it doesn’t seem much to write home about. This headline is as shocking as announcing an orca won the swim race!

DomesticatedZombie · 18/02/2022 11:15

Every win for Lia Thomas brings more sunlight.

Congratulations, Catherine Buroker.

KookaburraSits · 18/02/2022 11:29

I'm not sure what's worse - the fact that Lia decided (and was allowed) to take part in the women's event, or the fact that after absolutely smashing the first women's record, Lia is now doing some really lazy swimming in order to still win but not smash records in quite such a flagrant way. Lia knows. And everyone else knows.

RoyalCorgi · 18/02/2022 11:31

I suppose one answer is that people don't care about women, and they don't care about women's sport in particular. Another is that it will take something really high-profile to change things - a man winning the women's Olympic 100m sprint, for example. College championships don't cut through to the general public.

This what I don't get. When I used to compete, it was the sense of achievement that made me keep going. It was great to win, but a good PB and coming second was even better sometimes.

What is Lia getting out of this?

But then, doping has been around d for years, so for some people it must just be the winning.

NecessaryScene · 18/02/2022 11:38

There must be a particular sort of thrill in being able to openly cheat and people not being able to stop you.

I bet Lia sleeps extremely well at night and possibly often throughout the day

Mollyollydolly · 18/02/2022 12:33

I despise every single person who see's this and remains silent. Every single one.
