Manchester councillor readies motion on improving trans rights across city www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/its-time-more-manchester-councillor-22950927

The article doesn't specify except to say the motion wants the council to state twaw.

How anyone can read that list of demands and conclude there isn't any poor mental health or psychosis at play is beyond me

D0lphine · 02/02/2022 20:56

I assume we're assuming we're talking about the rights of trans and non binary people in the uk?

Because abroad you can be imprisoned, sacked etc for being lgbt.

neonpaws · 02/02/2022 21:13

That health manifesto has really raised the game for TRA tantrums. I wonder how the demand and funding for these services can be assessed if no records can be kept for trans people?
Sounds like someone really didn’t enjoy getting waxed, given the hair removal demands.

HermioneWeasley · 02/02/2022 21:14

@D0lphine even in those countries the T tend to have more rights than the LGB (and women) - Iran and Pakistan being two places that spring t9 mind.

couldhavenotcouldof22 · 02/02/2022 21:15

Wtf? They're mentioning abortion in the Republic, how dare they!

PriamFarrl · 02/02/2022 21:20

We demand immediate release & pardon for all trans prisoners.

Um, no. Trans people can be nasty people who need to be in prison just like anyone else can.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 02/02/2022 21:26

Wow, that must be a piss take. I can't tell any more, the whole thing has got so surreal.

Thirtytimesround · 02/02/2022 21:30

Blimey. Maybe I should have a manifesto.

I demand that kids stay in bed at least in between the hours of 11pm and 5am.
I demand the right to go to a mixed-sex gym or pub on my own without some creep demanding I flirt with him.
I demand that my medical appointments take place within 30 minutes of the time scheduled and within two weeks of me asking for help.
I demand that transwomen stop harassing women whose opinions differ from theirs.
I demand that academics can do their jobs without fear of hate campaigns.
I demand that a bunch of bananas last longer than 3 days before they turn yucky.

I demand that the postman stop putting my parcels in the bin.

You know they’re right this is kinda fun 👀

FOJN · 02/02/2022 21:32

I vaguely recall Rosie of Dawn doing a video about a NUS committee Jess Bradley was on. I think there were meeting minutes which contained many of the demands in the Trans Health Manifesto and also a proposal for reeducation camps or gulags for anyone who didn't share their world view.

DomesticatedZombie · 02/02/2022 21:41

The manifesto's from the Edinburgh branch of Action for Trans Health and I'm sorry but it's completely serious.

Jess Bradley is ringing a bell. Maybe one if the other branches, tho.

Wetdogloveshubert · 02/02/2022 21:46

Wow @DomesticatedZombie I'm sorry to say I cackled almost all the way through that, and my dh also enjoyed the sheer joy of the unending, contradictory bollocks...

SomeOwlsCoo · 02/02/2022 21:47

We demand the free & timely provision of ... surgical hair removal

Some private hair removal clinics offer hair removal "on the nhs" (Does that mean free to patient?) For transwomen on account of them finding male pattern hair growth distressing.

Oddly enough as a woman (you know, one that was born female) I find the practically full beard I grow fucking distressing too. But will the NHS fund hair removal? No.

stuckinagut · 02/02/2022 21:53

Is this what they actually lobby for? With all the problems in the world and these people are lobbying against bloody birth certificates, and what bra size they want to be? Grow up.

D0lphine · 02/02/2022 22:12
@D0lphine even in those countries the T tend to have more rights than the LGB (and women) - Iran and Pakistan being two places that spring t9 mind.
Well the question is What rights done trans and NB people have?

And most people seem to be saying they have a lot of rights. I think those comments are UK specific because elsewhere in the world trans people don't have certain rights afforded to other non- trans people.

If the discussion is UK/ Western Europe only then let's make that clear.

DomesticatedZombie · 02/02/2022 22:16

That's what some lobby for. Some want self ID with no medical checks. This view has a point - now that being transgender is no longer considered a mental illness there's not really a reason to require doctors to sign off on a GRC. (Nor for any form of NHS treatment, if it's not an illness, but that's another argument).

I think it should not be possible to alter a birth certificate.

Beyond that, if we were very clear on sex and the difference between sex and gender then they could hand out grcs like sweeties and it really wouldn't matter. The problems are birth certs being changed and the utterly ludicrous elision of gender into sex.

Jess Bradley was a director of Action for Trans Health from 2014-2018 (under Bradley's previous name of Josh).

The link in the OP is about Manchester, which is in the UK. The headline of the linked article is: "'It’s time to do more': Manchester councillor readies motion on improving trans rights across city"

It seems quite clear to me that the discussion is about the UK (or even one particular city in the UK).

Isthatthebestyoucando · 02/02/2022 22:25

It's Manchester UK.

@Theeyeballsinthesky

This is what happens when tumblr & reality interact
I still cannot for the life of me understand why so many actual adults with regular jobs in the real world nod along to this stuff.
EishetChayil · 02/02/2022 22:50

I always think it would be much easier to help trans people from a position of reality. The denial of sex and accusations of transphobia aimed at everyone who will not go along with the idea that twaw just gets people’s backs up and takes the focus away from things that could be done that would actually make a difference to trans people’s lives

My thoughts entirely.

DomesticatedZombie · 02/02/2022 22:56

Thanks, OldCrone.

Yes I absolutely agree with this too. I was just saying to my DP last night that if trans sports people like Lia Thomas were to say, okay I'm trans and I'd like to be referred to by this name and pronoun and wear feminine clothing, but I'm happy to be in the male team as my sex is male, I think people would really respect that and get on board with it.

NancyIris · 02/02/2022 23:16

But doesn’t living in a democracy mean that ‘We demand ...’ by any group has to be translated into ‘The people agree ...’ or ‘The law says ...’. Freedom isn’t one group demanding rights. You have to balance everyone’s needs. The NHS has limited funds and why should free unlimited cosmetic treatments trump cancer care?

Georgeskitchen · 02/02/2022 23:44

Manchester City Council would be better served discussing the appalling crime rates in Manchester. There have been 2 teenage boys stabbed to death just in the last few days
