Jennifer Swayne has been arrested on charges of vandalism, ‘hate crimes’ and public order offences. Police searched her house and removed several sheets of stickers.

Am I missing something? This woman is protesting against femicide and has been arrested for a hate crime?

Those stickers don't say anything about transpeople.

lady69 · 24/01/2022 00:53

This looks terrible for the police. Good grief, what the hell are they thinking? .

Enough4me · 24/01/2022 00:57

What police force is this?
This would be a good thread for the DailyM to pick up on (never thought I'd wish for that!)

SceneDrama · 24/01/2022 01:01

Were these the stickers she was arrested for putting up?!

Linguini · 24/01/2022 01:06

Those stickers don't say anything about transpeople.

It's a hate crime on men this time.

The worst thing about male violence against women is that it makes men look bad if it's pointed out.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 24/01/2022 01:06

Good god...I'd better be careful with my stickering

yourhairiswinterfire · 24/01/2022 01:10

Who is the "hate crime" against? Are 'murderer' and 'abuser' protected characteristics?

Thelnebriati · 24/01/2022 01:14

Those are her stickers, I'm not going to comment any more on them as she's still in custody.
Jennifer has severe bi polar disorder so I hope she's getting her meds.

I think stickering counts as fly posting, and there's always the possibility of being fined. It used to be something like £60 or £80 per sticker or poster, but I haven't kept up with any changes.

Is 'men' a default hate crime category then? No need for amendments to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill ?

Melroses · 24/01/2022 01:16

Best wishes to Jennifer - hope she has a good solicitor with her and is getting her meds xx

I hope there's a dreadful misunderstanding here because unless a mass of detail has been omitted, I'm baffled as to how the stickers constitute hate crimes.

Googling for info.

Nothing on this but one top results was this (recent)-

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/nov/24/gwent-police-apologises-for-failing-to-investigate-officers-reports-of-abuse

CheeseMmmm · 24/01/2022 04:12

I'm gonna wait more info.

Sex isn't a hate crime characteristic.

Equality etc sex is term. Male or female.

But sex not on hate crime list so as per pp other stickers let's see.

Irrespective of that.
WTF are they doing?

Not legal to put stickers around no.

However. Forces interested in this level crime? These days? Really???

And forces doing this totally disproportionate heavy handed shit for women doing... Stickers, ribbons.

When same forces recent massive failures around massive huge terrible crimes, often vv loads about MVAWG?

This is weird. Was weird from start. But after all the stuff with other forces. They still do things like this?

Why?
Must be they been told to take xy reports vv seriously. Obviously. Because otherwise would do fuck all.

Who told them?
Why?
When?

How police not said don't be silly look at all this massive stuff we got on plates?

Anyway that was general. Wait more info.

I can't see that this woman is a dangerous person.

And I've seen stuff about women on t-shirts stickers tube etc that was grim. So if some had something beyond the pale. That warranted all this. V interested to know what.

WarriorN · 24/01/2022 05:53

This happened just yesterday afternoon so it's difficult to know details,

WarriorN · 24/01/2022 05:54

She's undoubtedly been targeted for her feminism though

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/01/2022 07:00

She uses a mobility scooter. Gwent Police seem to have arrested a disabled woman with a severe mental health condition and put her in a cell for many hours while obtaining a search warrant for her home and taking away sheets of stickers about domestic violence. This is more akin to the response I'd expect to see for a suspected terrorist. I wonder if anyone has video of the arrest. Surely there must be more to this?

Flammkuchen · 24/01/2022 07:14

R4 just now had an item about women being arrested for standing up for their rights

... in Afghanistan.

Shocking and terrifying that it is also happening here but the media will not report it.

Just awful. She’s to be admired for pointing out this terrifying statistic. I also hope she has a good solicitor.

I remember seeing on here the jaw-dropping “messages” chalked onto pavements by a certain group of activists at a women’s conference a few months ago- some very offensive stuff that I wouldn’t want any child to see. I don’t recall any of those responsible for the writing being arrested.

It’s interesting, what’s deemed an offence Hmm

Flowers for Jennifer.

WarriorN · 24/01/2022 07:18

She's updated; she was interviewed at 1:30 am

She is disabled and has a mobility scooter. She has bipolar. They physically arrested her which she says caused a ptsd attack. She wasn't told when her meds arrived. She's taken lithium but the rest are late.

She then had to drive her mobility scooter home at 3:30 am through Newport up a steep hill with no phone which they have. She always has her phone incase the battery fails.

She's currently not allowed to sticker around new port.

All stickers about feminism and not about trans people.

She's been charged with hate aggravated vandalism.

Given there are apparently tra stickers with guns aimed at terfs in the area, the misogyny and hypocrisy is strong here.

bellinisurge · 24/01/2022 07:18

She should get her MP involved or at least tell them it's happening. Hope she's ok.

Whatwouldscullydo · 24/01/2022 07:20

I thought sex wasn't a protected characteristic in hate crime criteria. So if it doesn't mention trans peope then what's the hate element?

Rangoon · 24/01/2022 07:23

I am not with the people who generally post on this board but I am aghast at this. Shouldn't the police be trying to reduce the number of women killed rather than the number of women stickering? Shouldn't the police have that cell occupied by somebody who has just beaten up their partner rather than a disabled woman who uses a mobility scooter? I think this just another attempt to deal with "uppity" women who don't do what men want.

FrancescaContini · 24/01/2022 07:24

Hate-aggravated vandalism?? Shock

Alltheprettyseahorses · 24/01/2022 07:29

Isn't this the kind of thing that results in a £50 fine? There is no way the police can justify holding her in custody and searching her house for such a minor offence that seems to be legally punishable by fines only.

As for any 'hate crime' it's yet another argument in favour of getting rid of the so-called hate element imo. If something is a crime then that's enough but this is an example of universal beliefs that comply fully with UK legislation and basic reality bizarrely being classed as hate with any crime factor being gerrymandered into it. Maybe we all need to write to Priti Patel.
