I don’t think they’re ever aware of how much they let slip when they use Mumsnet as a punchline.

Lazy, sexist thinking. All of a piece with traducing JKR, of course. The temerity of the woman, trying to appeal to other women like her Grin

She’d be far better off begging for approval from fine chaps like Eoin.

(Who? Never heard of him, anyway.)

Sandie draw’s badly

Hmm As if JKR is only 'formerly beloved' or 'torching her reputation'. Do these idiots not realise that the majority of people agree with her point if view??! Also it's pretty obvious from the continuing popularity of HP books, films and merchandise that she is as beloved as she ever was to most people.

I'm too old to have read HP as a kid and didn't get the hype as an adult. My reading obsessed DS can take or leave HP, he has read the first four books and says he will get round to the others 'one day' (he will normally offer to pay for next day shipping for the next book in series if he is hooked). But since JKR has put her head above the parapet and kept it there despite all the hate that she receives I go out of my way to buy her books - DS will find the Christmas Pig under the tree this Christmas as will his cousins. and my godchildren, just like they all got the Ickabog last year. In short her bravery has made her beloved to me in a way her slightly wet boy wizard never did.
lazylinguist · 14/12/2021 15:59

What makes me laugh is how many people (including my own dc) seem to think JKR is a bigot and yet manage to nobly swallow their distaste enough to still love her books!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/12/2021 15:59

She doesn’t seem to have problems finding readers for the Strike books either. They are only growing in popularity with each successive one.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/12/2021 16:02

I don’t know why these American misogynists think we care tbh. There seems to be a particular breed of smug beardie leftie journalist misogynist to go along with the right wing religious nut type but they all emerge from the same deeply woman hating culture.

Eoin Higgins is this person:

BraveBananaBadge · 14/12/2021 16:45

That gave me a laugh at least 2319! And they're hard to come by in this debate. Nicely handled by Massie there.

Raging with Jonathan van Ness, who's crying that JKR "safe in her mansion" will never know the struggle and pain of etc etc. I really did used to like him but he has such a blind spot here where women are concerned. Missed the furore with the idiots who posed outside her address, did he? Not bothered to look at all into her past struggles with DV? How dare he try to dismiss her experiences and her vulnerability because she has money now. These people just seem to be getting stupider.

Waves at Sarah Vine. Is she lurker or poster?

The use of the chilling effect is never more obvious than with the vilification of JKR. If those who are against women's rights can get a whole generation to repeat as fact, without using any critical thinking skills, that she is a transphobe, it sends a very clear message to women who are dependant on employment to pay their mortgages etc to shut up or they will get the same treatment. Bullying JKR because she is rich and famous is allowed seemingly and dismissed as 'the tears of a millionaire', but it is conveniently ignored that JKR has experience of domestic violence and being on benefits and even now, having made money through her own hard work, ploughs it into good causes and pays her taxes. To rational people, she is an absolute inspiration.

Well said.

I have asked a couple of people to be specific about the words she has used that could be interpreted as “transphobic”. They can’t remember/tell me. With one person, I found the piece of writing and handed it to them, asking them to show me. They pushed my phone away and muttered something about not having the time.

What angers me most about, as you say, the vilification of JKR is the lazy, brainless following of the woke brigade. It makes me despair. Many people seem not to question anything. How do they study for a degree or hold down any kind of job that requires independent thinking?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 15/12/2021 09:08

@SayYouDontMind

JKR lives in Scotland. I live in Scotland. I don't think some people realise what is happening in Scotland. Nonsense like this ( see attached). A project for Women returning to work. Women who have to renegotiate their entrance to the work place because of absences for childbirth and rearing, elderly parental responsibilities, childcare responsibilities - the constant fucking juggling, compromise, sacrifice... and on line 1 of the description of what you need to qualify for this help? 'Identify as a women' (sic)

JKR thank you for not retreating from this battle. We need you.

Wow so they would exclude a female returning from maternity leave if she is non-binary, agender or identifies as a man or just doesn't identify as a woman, how very inclusive of them.
gailforce1 · 15/12/2021 10:47

Totally agree. The most worrying aspect is the fact that we have a generation of young people who have no critical thinking skills and an inability research and debate an issue.

Needmoresleep · 15/12/2021 11:58

And so it continues

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10310985/JK-Rowlings-credit-barely-features-new-Fantastic-Beasts-trailer-amid-ongoing-transphobia-row.html

JKR is a strong woman. I hope that we will soon see some embarrassed back peddling from her cancellers.

It never ever occurs to them to consider why the online space which is one of most, if not the most, female by both proportion and by absolute number in the UK, which also allows anonymous comments, seems to have a disproportionately gender critical perspective.

I mean, it's a total mystery, right? Why on earth would a space with a high proportion of female people have so many people who care whether female voices are heard, female experiences are respected and female people are recognised as existing? Surely they can't have anything to say that male people haven't already considered for them? Hmm

Waitwhat23 · 15/12/2021 13:47

@gailforce1 It's only an inability to debate - they just can't conceive that someone else is allowed a different opinion. We've seen so many parents on here say that when they are trying to discuss the issue after being called slurs by their own children or frozen out/shouted at in their own home, their children simply slam doors in their face and refuse to listen. In a recent documentary, Suzi Ruffell was visibly angry and uncomfortable at hearing someone else's opinion because it did not align with her own. Students at Universities have to be reminded that they may hear opinions which differ from their own during lectures. And it seems like you cannot take a moderate view - you have to be all in or face cancellation. There's no nuance or thought behind it all. Agree, or else. JKR's referencing of 1984 is spot on. It's wrongthink come to life.

And the spitefulness of leaving JKR's name off her own creation is absolutely jaw dropping. It actually beggars belief in it's childishness.

Waitwhat23 · 15/12/2021 13:48

Correction - it's not only an inability to debate

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/12/2021 13:50

Both my teens got very cross with me last night when I didn't automatically agree with them that "jk Rowling is being transphobic again". The eldest is doing 4 A levels and said "it's definitely possible to change sex". Well, huh.

Rhannion · 15/12/2021 14:40

Eoin is getting his arse in a plate and yes we should be proud of Mumsnet.

Alan of Sevenoaks seems very wound up Grin

Waitwhat23 · 15/12/2021 15:03

Thought this comment was great -

'She ousts the misogyny of the Twitter trans movement. With her own name and face, while the opposing team hides behind anime pics and fake names.'

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 15/12/2021 16:12

"The Mumsnet set" though.

Is that the Mumsnet Haircut with added Elnett?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/12/2021 17:32

And the scarf. Don’t forget the scarf.
